US President Joe Biden asserted executive privilege and blocked the audio tapes of his interview with special counsel Robert Hur, over his mishandling of classified files, from releasing.

US President Joe Biden asserted executive privilege and blocked the audio tapes of his interview with special counsel Robert Hur, over his mishandling of classified files, from releasing. In February, special counsel Robert Hur had questioned the age and memory of the US president. The Republican federal prosecutor had refused to recommend charges against President Biden in the case of handling of classified documents. The decision was notified to Republicans James Comer and Jim Jordan in a letter by White House counsel Ed Siskel on Thursday (May 16). Also Read: Biden government imposes tariffs on Chinese EVs and computer chips The decision was taken after the US president was recommended to assert executive privilege by Attorney General Merrick Garland. “It is the longstanding position of the executive branch held by administrations of both parties that an official who asserts the President’s claim of executive privilege cannot be prosecuted for criminal contempt of Congress," wrote Justice Department official Carlos Felipe Uriarte in a letter to the two Republicans. In this report, Hur wrote that one reason for not bringing a case against Biden is that the president can portray himself as an "elderly man with a poor memory" and be sympathetic to a jury. Garland likely to be held in contempt of Congress Republicans have demanded the release of the recordings of Hur's interviews with the president, an action which was pushed back by US Attorney General Merrick Garland. Garland will most probably be held in contempt of Congress over the step. In another letter to Biden, Garland wrote that the audio recordings of the interview "fall within the scope of executive privilege." Giving the recordings to Congress "would raise an unacceptable risk of undermining the Department’s ability to conduct similar high-profile criminal investigations — in particular, investigations where the voluntary co-operation of White House officials is exceedingly important,” he said. Watch: US: Joe Biden, Donald Trump agree to two debates on June 27 and September 10 Garland further said to the Democratic president that the “committee’s needs are plainly insufficient to outweigh the deleterious effects that the production of the recordings would have on the integrity and effectiveness of similar law enforcement investigations in the future.” Meanwhile, Assistant Attorney General Carlos Felipe Uriarte appealed to the lawmakers not to go ahead with the contempt effort to avoid “unnecessary and unwarranted conflict.” “It is the longstanding position of the executive branch held by administrations of both parties that an official who asserts the president’s claim of executive privilege cannot be held in contempt of Congress,” wrote Uriarte. The European Union (EU) on Thursday (May 16) started a formal investigation into Facebook and Instagram on allegations that the Meta-owned platforms are leading to addictive behaviour in children.

The European Union (EU) on Thursday (May 16) started a formal investigation into Facebook and Instagram on allegations that the Meta-owned platforms are leading to addictive behaviour in children. The investigation is being carried out under a mammoth law called the Digital Services Act (DSA) which forces the largest tech firms in the world to take more steps to protect European users online and remove any illegal content. This is the second investigation which has been launched into Meta. Last month, another probe was launched by the European Union over concerns that Facebook and Instagram are not countering disinformation. Also Read: EU flexes arms as it launches probe against Meta over disinformation concerns "We are not convinced that it has done enough to comply with the DSA obligations to mitigate the risks of negative effects to the physical and mental health of young Europeans," said EU's internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton. "We are sparing no effort to protect our children," he stated. Meanwhile, Meta's spokesperson tried to defend the company and claimed that it had taken steps to protect young users. "We want young people to have safe, age-appropriate experiences online and have spent a decade developing more than 50 tools and policies designed to protect them," said the spokesperson. "This is a challenge the whole industry is facing, and we look forward to sharing details of our work with the European Commission," the spokesperson added. EU suspects Meta's systems 'may stimulate behavioural addictions in children' The European Commission, which is the tech regulator of the European Union, in Thursday's (May 16) announcement said that it suspected the systems of the platform "may stimulate behavioural addictions in children". The commission also raised another issue which was the so-called "rabbit hole" effect. This happens when users get related content based on an algorithm, which in a few cases leads to more extreme content. The commission also expressed concern that the age-verification tools of Meta may not be that effective. According to DSA, there are strict rules for protecting children and ensuring that their privacy and security are not hampered online. The EU fears that Meta may not be taking enough steps to meet these obligations. Watch: Meta's oversight board probes handling of AI-generated explicit images In a statement, the European Union said that the "opening of formal proceedings does not prejudge its outcome". No deadline has been set for the completion of the probe. The DSA is present within the powerful legal armoury of the European Union to keep a check on big tech companies. Facebook and Instagram fall among 23 "very large" online platforms which need to comply with the DSA or face the risk of fines which can be as high as six per cent of the total global turnover of the platform. It can also impose a ban on social media platforms for serious and repeated violations. Other social media platforms which have been under the scrutiny of DSA are Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube. The incident took place in October 2023 when she took a 20-minute Uber cab ride to go back to her home in Campbelltown during rush hours. Speaking to News.com.au, Tayla Pimlott said she had a harrowing experience and was forced to "holding back tears" as she feared being raped on what she had thought to be a "quick and quiet" journey. The incident took place in October 2023. Pimlott said, "Usually, when someone takes their pants down, they ruffle down a bit or something. I saw none of that, I just saw this subtle hand gesture. I could see clearly that he (the Uber driver) had his penis out, and he was masturbating." Pimlott reached out to her mother and boyfriend and informed them about the incident. She also recorded the man masturbating to submit it as a police evidence. 'I could die, I could be raped', woman narrates her fears "There was a part of me that thought, 'Oh God, I could die, I could be raped, this man could touch me. My brain was frozen and my heart was pounding ... I was petrified," the woman told the outlet. When she was 10 minutes away from home, she messaged her mother, "I'm about 10 minutes away from home. I need you to (wait) outside for me. I'm in an Uber and this man has his penis out." Pimlott said that she felt it was best for her to pretend she did not see anything as she feared challenging the driver will land her in trouble. "He fully turned around and looked at me and in the most creepiest voice I've ever heard he goes, 'Thank you so much,'" the woman said. India's Supreme Court ordered NewsClick editor Prabir Purkayastha's release after it observed that his arrest by the Delhi Police in the anti-terror case was 'invalid'. A bench of Justices Sandeep Mehta and BR Gavai on Wednesday (May 15) said that the court was not provided with the remand copy which made his arrest void. "There is no hesitation in the mind of the court that the grounds of arrest were not provided...which vitiates arrest. The appellant is entitled to release from custody after the Pankaj Bansal case. The remand order is invalid," Justice Mehta said. According to the top court, the grounds for arrest should be provided in writing to the accused person in custody. "This is a major and big relief because we have been maintaining from the beginning that the entire proceedings against him were illegal and the manner of arrest was illegal which has now been upheld by the Supreme Court," he added. Why did the Delhi Police arrest Prabir Purkayastha? Delhi Police had arrested Purkayastha on October 3 under the anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, days after a New York Times investigation accused NewsClick of receiving funds from a network which promoted Chinese propaganda. In the chargesheet, which was filed in March and ran through 8,000 pages with different annexures, NewsClick and Purkayastha were accused by the Delhi Police of promoting Chinese propaganda and terror funding. A case was filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against NewsClick on October 11 for breaching the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. The attorneys of former US president Donald Trump held a sharp cross-examination of Michael Cohen on Tuesday (May 14). Since Monday (May 13), Cohen has been facing questions by the prosecutors on the stand and speaking about how he repeatedly lied and also went to prison for protecting his former boss. During the trial, Cohen said that Trump is a 'douchebag dictator' and stated that he would like to see him 'convicted'. In the hush money trial case, Cohen is seen as a key witness by the court. The case is centred around whether business records were falsified by Trump to cover up a hush money payment of $130,000 made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016. Defence calls out Cohen's obsession with Trump Defence attorney Todd Blanche, during the cross-examination, highlighted the alleged "obsession" of Cohen with Trump. The sun emitted its biggest solar flare since 2005 on Tuesday (May 14), days after Earth was hit by severe solar storms and led to dazzling northern lights in different places.

The sun emitted its biggest solar flare since 2005 on Tuesday (May 14), days after Earth was hit by severe solar storms and led to dazzling northern lights in different places. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Centre, the latest flare reached its peak just before 1 pm ET and had an X-class rating of X8.7. X-class solar flares are the strongest solar flares, which according to NASA are "giant explosions on the sun that send energy, light and high speed particles into space." As per the centre, the solar flare was an R3 or "strong" flare, which meant that it may have led to wide-area blackouts of high-frequency radio communications for nearly an hour on the Earth's sunlit side. Also Read: Gigantic sunspot, wide enough to fill 15 worlds, hits Earth with powerful X-class solar flare It may have also led to low-frequency navigation signal issues during the same period of time. Sunspot, much larger than Earth, to soon explode into flares "Flares of this magnitude are not frequent," said the centre in its update, as the NOAA also wrote, "Region 3664 not done yet!" The solar flare was released from the sunspot named 3664. When that spot is combined with another sunspot dubbed 3663, it becomes "much larger than Earth," NOAA said. The Sun emitted a strong solar flare on May 14, 2024, peaking at 12:51pm ET. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured an image of the event, which was classified as X8.7. https://t.co/njaYS2IutE pic.twitter.com/oIJn2gmIUF — NASA Sun & Space (@NASASun) May 14, 2024 × The centre said that till last Thursday, 3664 was only continuing "to grow and increase in magnetic complexity and has evolved into a higher threat of increased solar flare risk." Just before the massive solar flare, two other solar flares, rated X1.7 and X1.2, also erupted, even though they were not likely to have any major impact on Earth. Even though the flare had intensity, the officials said that they were not concerned about coronal mass ejection. Such coronal mass ejection had caused geomagnetic storms like the rare extreme storm which took place over the weekend and sent the northern lights to far lower latitudes than normal. It also jeopardised the GPS systems on which farmers rely during the planting season. Watch: Strong solar storm hits earth; threatens to disrupt communication & power grids "Due to its location, any CME associated with this flare will likely not have any geomagnetic impacts on Earth," the Space Weather Prediction Center said. Currently, Earth is in Solar Cycle 25 which started in 2020. "While we are not predicting a particularly active Solar Cycle 25, violent eruptions from the Sun can occur at any time," said Doug Biesecker, a solar physicist at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Centre. YouTube blocked the access of users to videos of Hong Kong's popular protest song, days after an injunction to ban the song was approved by the court in the city.

YouTube blocked the access of users to videos of Hong Kong's popular protest song, days after an injunction to ban the song was approved by the court in the city. “Glory to Hong Kong” had emerged as the anthem song of the anti-government protests held in 2019. YouTube said that the company would comply with the removal order and access to more than 32 YouTube videos of the song would be blocked after the song was deemed to be “prohibited publications” under the injunction. Any attempts made by users to get access to YouTube videos from Hong Kong on Wednesday (May 15) stated that they were unavailable. A message appeared instead of the video, saying “This content is not available on this country domain due to a court order.” Also Read: Hong Kong appeals court backs ban on protest anthem 'Glory to Hong Kong' The court, while approving the application of the government to ban the song, agreed that it can be “weaponised” and used for inciting secession. How did YouTube react to the ban by the court? In an emailed statement, YouTube, which is owned by Alphabet Inc., said, “We are disappointed by the court’s decision but are complying with its removal order by blocking access to the listed videos for viewers in Hong Kong." “We’ll continue to consider our options for an appeal, to promote access to information,” the company stated, further adding that the concerns of human rights organisations regarding the ban's chilling effect on free expression online were shared by them. As per YouTube, the links to the 32 videos on YouTube will also now not appear on Google Search for users in Hong Kong. Co-chair of digital practice at Washington-headquartered business and policy consultancy Asia Group George Chen said that it is worth watching how Hong Kong authorities have been aggressively asking internet platforms to remove the song. Watch: UK charges three with working for Hong Kong Intelligence | Crackdown on foreign spies Chen, who was Greater China's former head of public policy at Meta, said that if the government starts asking social media platforms to remove hundreds of links every day, it will undermine the confidence of investors in Hong Kong. “That will hurt Hong Kong’s reputation as a leading financial centre because we know how important a free flow of data and information means to a financial centre,” Chen said. “So the government should be very careful and be aware of some unintended consequences that may impact its economic recovery and investors’ confidence," he added. Social media platforms, like YouTube, generally have policies for the removal of content on requests from governments. The demonstrators generally sang “Glory to Hong Kong” during massive anti-government protests in 2019. Later, the song was played mistakenly as the anthem of the city at international sporting events in place of China’s “March of the Volunteers,” which upset city officials. A car-sized asteroid had a close shave with Earth on Tuesday morning (May 14), two days after the astronomers discovered it. The asteroid 2024 JN16 was nearly the size of a car, less than 15 feet (4 metres) wide. The asteroid did not hit Earth, however, it came as close as 11,500 miles (18,500 kilometres) from the surface of our planet when it zipped by at 5:50 am EDT (0950 GMT) on Tuesday (May 14), as per The Virtual Telescope Project.
