Japan's Parliament agreed to change a decades-old law after which divorced couples will be allowed to have joint custody of their children from 2026. In Japan, custody was traditionally granted to a single parent who then completely cut off access of the other parent to their children. Till Friday (May 17), Japan was the only G7 country which had not legally recognised the concept of joint custody. Also Read: Another fallout of Japan's ageing population - Akiya houses - and it's not looking good In Japan, most separations happen through "consent divorce" in which both parties sign a paper and decide to end a marriage mutually. The lawyers in such scenarios say that the couple is free to make decisions over custody and visitation arrangements. However, if the two parties go to court, the custody is awarded to one parent. The divorced parents have criticised the system and claimed that they have been estranged from their children due to the judgement. Japan's mothers granted child's custody, fathers lacked access to children The one parent who was generally given the legal custody of a child in Japan was the mother, once the marriage ended. Some people saw this rule as a safeguard against child abuse and domestic violence. However, many have raised concerns that it can lead to the breaking of meaningful contact between the child and their other parent. The change has been brought amid increasing pressure over the frustrations of non-custodial parents, like fathers, who do not have access to children. In 2019, a UN committee recommended that Japan "allow for shared custody of children when it is in the child's best interests, including for foreign parents". Watch: Gravitas | Japan's new relationship trend: Friendship marriage explained As per the new bill, sole custody can be maintained if both parents decide that it is the best option or when it is a case of domestic violence or child abuse. In joint custody, one parent will be able to make decisions without holding consultation with others on issues like health or schooling in "emergency circumstances". There are no official tallies which reflect the number of minors who are not connected to one of their parent in Japan, even though campaigns have been held both for and against the changes. As per a 2022 survey which was done by a support group for single mothers, it was discovered that 80 per cent of single parents in Japan were not in support of joint custody. "Even in cases of domestic violence, failure to prove it in court due to insufficient evidence can lead to joint custody being established," said campaigners against the move, in January. In new research, experts have projected that global life expectancy will increase by nearly five years by 2025. However, factors like high blood pressure and obesity will force people to spend more years battling their poor health. The findings were published as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study 2021. The study was published in the medical journal The Lancet on Thursday (May 16). Lead research scientist at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHMEE) at the University of Washington and research head Liane Ong said, "Future trends may be quite different than past trends because of factors such as climate change and increasing obesity and addiction." Also Read: Deaths due to heat at all-time high; heatwaves in Europe linked to 30% increase in fatalities It was predicted by the Global Burden of Diseases team said that life expectancy is likely to increase from 71.1 years to 76 years for men and from 76.2 years to 80.5 years for women. The biggest gains will be made by the countries which currently have lower life expectancies. "This is an indicator that while health inequalities between the highest and lowest income regions will remain, the gaps are shrinking, with the biggest increases anticipated in sub-Saharan Africa," stated IMHEE director Dr Chris Murray. According to the researchers, this trend is mostly driven by public health measures which have improved survival rates and prevented deaths from diseases like COVID-19, heart disease, and a range of communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases. Obesity and high blood pressure negatively impact health of people It was found by the researchers that the total number of years lost by people is almost 49.4 per cent since 2000 because of metabolic risk factors like high blood sugar, high body mass index (BMI) and high blood pressure. Watch: India: Crowdfunding helps toddler get life-saving $2 mn jab Low birth weight, smoking and air pollution were also some of the largest contributors to the number of years lost in life due to poor health and early death. "There is immense opportunity ahead for us to influence the future of global health by getting ahead of these rising metabolic and dietary risk factors, particularly those related to behavioural and lifestyle factors like high blood sugar, high body mass index, and high blood pressure," said Murray. In another incident of falling space junk from the sky, a massive metal piece of space debris suddenly fell on a farm and was found by a farmer in Saskatchewan, Canada.

In another incident of falling space junk from the sky, a massive metal piece of space debris suddenly fell on a farm and was found by a farmer in Saskatchewan, Canada. The heavy piece of charred metal, which weighed 40 kilogrammes, was suspected to belong to space debris, with multiple layers of burned composite fibres and webbing, reported CBC. “But I had no idea. I don’t build spaceships for a living. I farm,” said farmer Barry Sawchuk, while speaking to CBC. Also Read: Massive collision of black holes took place in ancient space. As per the local reports, the charred metal was sent to a group of astronomy professors who traced the metal's journey which matched with a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft's reentry in February. On February 7, the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft undocked from the ISS and landed over the Pacific Ocean. A crew of astronauts had returned to Earth from the spacecraft in a splashdown off the coast of Daytona, Florida. The spacecraft was made using an expendable trunk module and reusable crew capsule which is jettisoned prior to reentry of Dragon through Earth’s atmosphere. As per experts, the trunk module which was discarded before the reentry of the Axiom-3 mission crew in February may have landed on the Canadian farm. Another charred piece of metal had fallen on a farmland in Australia in July 2022 and the experts had suspected that it came from SpaceX’s Dragon trunk module. Amid the growing space industry, the risk of getting hit by a falling piece of spacecraft has increased. However, Canadian farmer Sawchuk is not very much concerned about the growing threat. He is planning to sell the piece of space junk and donate some of the profit to building a hockey rink in Saskatchewan, Sawchuk, as per the CBC. (With inputs from agencies)

A new study has found that humans started making deadly and complex hunting wood weapons 300,000 years ago. Earlier, archaeologists had suspected that humans used wooden tools till the time they were also hunting with stone ones. However, now because of the more fragile nature of wood, major evidence has rotted away. Archeologist Dirk Leder, who is from the Lower Saxony State Office for Cultural Heritage, along with colleagues used 3D microscopy and micro-CT scanners to examine 187 wooden artefacts which were discovered from Schoningen in Germany. "Wood was a crucial raw material for human evolution, but it is only in Schöningen that it has survived from the Paleolithic period in such great quality," University of Gottingen archaeologist Thomas Terberger said while speaking to Science Alert. Also Read: Archaeologists uncover Alexander the Great’s bathroom in Greece In the middle of these multiple wooden artefacts, the largest one found belonged to the Pleistocene epoch (2.58 million to 11,700 years ago). The archaeologists found at least seven throwing sticks, 10 spears, and 35 domestic tools. The tools, which included spruce, pine, and larch, were all carved from wood and they were both hard and flexible. In the tools, there was clear proof of a splitting technique, along with signs of abrasion, scraping and carving. "The way the wooden tools were so expertly manufactured was a revelation to us," explained Annemieke Milks, University of Reading palaeolithic archaeologist. Archaeologists find evidence of butchered animals, recycling The archaeologists also discovered evidence of nearly 25 butchered animals, which were mainly horses, from the same site at Schoningen. Speaking to The New York Times, Terberger said, "It turned out that these pre-Homo sapiens had fashioned tools and weapons to hunt big game. Not only did they communicate together to topple prey, but they were sophisticated enough to organise the butchering and roasting." The researchers further argued that such powerful hunting abilities appear much older than the wood artefacts discovered in Schöningen. Watch: Five bodies unearthed at former Nazi army base "Likewise, (hunting) would have ensured sustainable populations even in less favourable parts of Europe during the Pleistocene and contributed to human range expansion across the globe," wrote Leder and team, in their paper. The researchers also discovered evidence of recycling. It was found that the tools, which were blunted or broken, appeared to be reworked for new purposes. "The study provides unique insights into Pleistocene woodworking techniques," the researchers said. "Schöningen's wooden hunting weapons exemplify the interplay of technological complexity, human behaviour, and human evolution," it added. (With inputs from agencies)

With the help of the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists have spotted the most ancient collision of a black hole, likely to have taken place when the universe was only 740 million years old.

With the help of the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists have spotted the most ancient collision of a black hole, likely to have taken place when the universe was only 740 million years old. For the first time, astronomers have spotted such a merger which also appears to be the first one to have taken place in the history of the universe. It occurred in the galaxy system called ZS7. Black holes are massive cosmic items spread across our universe and their gravitational fields are strong enough to stop even light from escaping their event horizons. Also Read: Parasite black holes devouring stars from inside, says study When two black holes merge, they sound dreadful and the process takes place slowly as they coalesce into a single object. One black hole was 50 million times the mass of the Sun: Scientists In an ESA (European Space Agency) release, the study’s lead author and an astronomer at the University of Cambridge Hannah Ubler said, “Our findings suggest that merging is an important route through which black holes can rapidly grow, even at cosmic dawn." “Together with other Webb findings of active, massive black holes in the distant Universe, our results also show that massive black holes have been shaping the evolution of galaxies from the very beginning," she said. The vision of the James Webb Telescope was so sharp that the team spatially separated the two black holes which helped them understand some of their physical characteristics. It was found that one of the Black Holes was nearly 50 million times the mass of the Sun and the other was hidden in a dense cloud of gas. Watch: Gigantic sunspot wide enough to fill 15 worlds becomes visible The full paper of the team on the discovery was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), which is a space-based gravitational wave observatory, was formally adopted by the ESA in January which paved the way for the eventual operation and launch of the spacecraft. In the press release, LISA’s lead project scientist at the European Space Agency Nora Luetzgendorf said, “Webb’s results are telling us that lighter systems detectable by LISA should be far more frequent than previously assumed." “It will most likely make us adjust our models for LISA rates in this mass range. This is just the tip of the iceberg," she added. (With inputs from agencies)
