Over a week after India's External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart in Laos, the representatives of the Asian neighbours met in New Delhi to discuss the prolonged crisis along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The crisis began in April 2022 when the Chinese side intruded towards the Indian side of the LAC and aggravated in June when the troops of two countries clashed in eastern Ladakh in the north, which resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of Chinese troops.

"Further to discussions between the two Foreign Ministers in their recent meetings at Astana and Vientiane, the two sides reviewed the current situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with a view to finding an early resolution of the outstanding issues," an official statement said.

"Restoration of peace and tranquility, and respect for the LAC are an essential basis for restoration of normalcy in bilateral relations. They (the two sides) agreed on the need to jointly uphold peace and tranquility on the ground in the border areas in accordance with relevant bilateral agreements, protocols and understandings reached between the two governments," it added.

"The discussion at the meeting was in-depth, constructive and forward-looking. Both sides agreed to maintain the momentum through the established diplomatic and military channels."

Earlier on July 29, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar ruled out any role for a third party in India's border dispute with China, saying the two neighbours have an issue and it is for them to find a way out.

"We are not looking to other countries to sort out what is an issue between India and China," Jaishankar said, while responding to a series of questions at a press conference in Tokyo.

India, China agree to ‘uphold peace and tranquility’ along Line of Actual Control

Amid raging war in Gaza between Israel and armed Palestinian groups, including Hamas, an increasing number of Israeli parents are requesting sperm extraction from their deceased sons who were casualties of the ongoing war, according to a BBC report.

Since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent Israeli retaliation, over 400 Israeli troops have been killed in the line of duty, according to official figures.

The Israeli health ministry reports that sperm has been extracted from approximately 170 men, both civilians and soldiers, marking a fifteen-fold increase compared to previous years.

The procedure involves making a small incision in the testicle to obtain tissue, from which live sperm cells can be extracted and frozen. This process is most effective within 24 hours after death, though sperm cells can survive up to 72 hours in the body.

To support the affected IDF (Israel Defense Forces) families, some procedural rules have been relaxed, yet many of them remain frustrated by the lengthy legal processes involved.

Last year in October, the Israeli health ministry eliminated the need for a court order to extract sperm. However, widows or parents wishing to use the sperm for conception must still prove in court that the deceased intended to have children, a process that can take years.

The precedent for this practice was set in 2002, when an Israeli couple used their deceased soldier son's sperm after he was killed by a Palestinian sniper in Gaza. Their granddaughter is now 10 years old.

Experts point to the significant emotional value this process holds for bereaved families but also highlight the complications arising for single men.

In response to the rising number of casualties in the ongoing conflict, Israeli lawmakers are working on drafting legislation to establish clearer guidelines for sperm retrieval and use.

Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, was killed on July 31 in Tehran in a raid that Iran has accused Israel of carrying out, pushing West Asia further on edge amid the raging war in Gaza.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) is currently investigating the attack that killed the 62-year-old Haniyeh who was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran's new president, Masud Pezeshkian, on July 30.

Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union, confirmed Haniyeh’s death via its Telegram channel, stating he was killed in an "air strike on his residence in Tehran".

An Israeli government spokesperson declined to comment on Haniyeh's death.

"We are not commenting on that particular incident," spokesperson David Mencer told a briefing with journalists.

Earlier in the day, a photo of Haniyeh with the word "Eliminated" stamped on his forehead appeared on the Government Press Office's Facebook page before being deleted without explanation. The post did not explicitly claim responsibility but mentioned Haniyeh was "killed in a precise strike in Tehran."

Haniyeh's death and larger conflict in West Asia

Haniyeh's death coincides with a US military strike in Iraq as tensions in the region remain heightened amid deepening concerns about a potential all-out war in West Asia. The US strike targeted a base south of Baghdad used by Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces, killing four members and wounding four others. Washington described the strike as an act of self-defence.

In a statement less than 24 hours after his inauguration, President Pezeshkian asserted that Iran "will defend its territorial integrity" following the attack. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also vowed revenge against Israel.

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas condemned Haniyeh's killing, calling it a “cowardly act and dangerous development,” according to the Palestinian state news agency WAFA.

Several countries have denounced the attack. Russia labeled it an "unacceptable political assassination," while Turkey warned it could escalate the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The assassination of Haniyeh comes as the United States pushes for a temporary ceasefire and a deal to release hostages held in Gaza. Senior officials from the US, Israel, Qatar, and Egypt are engaged in talks to secure such a deal.

Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas leaders following the group's October 7 attack that killed 1,200 people and resulted in around 250 hostages, some of whom have since been released.

Israel says ‘no comments’, US claims no role in Hamas chief Haniyeh’s assassination

Former BBC news anchor Huw Edwards, one of the most recognisable faces on UK television, pleaded guilty Wednesday to three counts of making indecent images of children.

The 62-year-old -- who resigned from the BBC in April on "medical advice", six months after he was arrested -- faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a minimum of 12 months.

Wearing a dark suit and blue tie, Edwards sat impassively during the 25-minute court hearing as he admitted receiving 41 indecent images of children on WhatsApp, including seven of the most serious type.

Under English law, electronic communications involving indecent imagery of children -- including receiving and downloading pictures and videos -- can constitute the offence of making indecent images of children.

The crimes involving Edwards occurred between December 2020 and August 2021, amended from the initial chargesheet which ran to April 2022.

Westminster Magistrates' Court in London heard that the former TV anchor had received 377 sexual images from a man he met online, of which 41 were indecent images of children.

"These images appear to have been received with approval," prosecutor Ian Hope told the court.

Of the gravest, the estimated age of most of the children was 13 to 15, but one was aged between seven and nine, he noted.

Edwards had been told that the male in the "moving film" was "quite young looking" and that he could be sent more that were "illegal".

Although the ex-presenter received that film, he told the man not to send any illegal images, the court heard.

- 'Serious issues' -

Edwards's lawyer, Philip Evans, said that his client's devices had been seized and that it was clear he had not made or shared the images.

"There's no suggestion in this case that Mr Edwards has... in the traditional sense of the word, created any image of any sort," Evans told the court.

He added that the defendant was of "good character" and that "there are serious issues in relation to Mr Edwards's health, both mental and physical".

Chief magistrate Paul Goldspring released Edwards on conditional bail until his next hearing on September 16, when he could be sentenced.

Goldspring ordered probation services to draw up a report, telling Edwards he needed "to read more about you" before sentencing.

"I'm asking the probation service to look at this case, with genuinely all options open," the magistrate said.

He quit on April 22 after 40 years with the broadcaster.

As the accusations became front-page news last July, Edwards's wife Vicky Flind said the father of five was "suffering from serious mental health issues" and had been admitted to hospital.

Several countries in West Asia, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait, have expressed grave concerns about the conduct of Pakistani expatriates and the labour force, a recent report has found.

The issue was brought to light by Dr Arshad Mahmood, Secretary of Overseas Pakistanis, during a Senate Standing Committee meeting on Overseas Pakistanis.

Arshad has noted that several Gulf countries have raised reservations about the behaviour of overseas Pakistanis in matters related to work ethics, attitudes, and criminal activities.

In the UAE, Pakistanis are involved in 50 per cent of crimes, the report said while citing the communication by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Additionally, there have been concerns about "inappropriate" behaviour, such as making videos in front of women in Dubai.

Kuwait has raised specific issues regarding Pakistani nurses who allegedly refuse to perform certain job-related duties, placing the burden on ward boys for regular tasks. These nurses reportedly do not attempt to learn the local language and seek to move to Europe after a short stay in Kuwait.

In Qatar, officials from the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis reported that Pakistani labourers have been found refusing to wear safety helmets during work.

Earlier in September 2023, officials had said that Pakistani beggars travel to countries like Iraq and Saudi Arabia under the pretext of 'Ziarat' (pilgrimage) and subsequently engage in begging. Official data states that Pakistani nationals account for 90 per cent of beggars arrested in these countries.

Israel says it struck Beirut, targeted Hezbollah commander behind Golan Heights attack

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe failed on Monday to secure the backing of the biggest political party in parliament for his re-election bid, posing a major challenge to his prospects in the Sept. 21 vote.

Nearly 17 million of Sri Lanka’s 22 million population are eligible to cast ballots in the vote that is crucial to determine the future of reforms in the South Asian island nation weathering its worst financial crisis in decades.

Of the various candidates, Wickremesinghe is seen as the most market- and reform-friendly option. He took over the top job in July 2022 as the economy crumbled under a severe financial crisis triggered by a record shortfall of foreign exchange reserves.

But with just one seat in parliament, he needs the support of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), which holds a parliamentary majority and counts former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother as key members, to be a stronger contender.

Although the SLPP decision is a blow to Wickremesinghe, it does not take him out of the race entirely, as he is contesting as an independent candidate, and a breakaway faction of the SLPP and other opposition parties could end up supporting him.

“The politburo decided by a significant majority that Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna will present a candidate under the SLPP party symbol,” SLPP General Secretary Salaga Kariyawasam told reporters after the party’s politburo meeting.

The SLPP candidate would be announced in the next few days, Kariyawasam added.

There was no immediate comment from Wickremesinghe or his office in response to the SLPP decision.

A source in Wickremesinghe’s United National Party said the outcome was expected.

“We are still expecting a group of SLPP members to support President Wickremesinghe as well as parliamentarians from minority parties,” said the source with direct knowledge of the matter. “This allows us to build a broader coalition across different parties and ethnic lines.”

Wickremesinghe’s predecessor, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was the first sitting president to be ousted from power after thousands of disgruntled protesters occupied his office and official residence forcing him to flee the country and later resign.

Over the past two years, Wickremesinghe has overseen a fragile economic recovery securing a $2.9 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout programme that helped stem a fall in the rupee, tame runaway inflation, and rebuild dollar reserves.

Wickremesinghe also set the groundwork for Sri Lanka to start debt restructuring talks with its official creditors and bondholders.

But the pain from the financial fallout is far from over. Under the IMF programme Sri Lanka still has to increase tax revenue, fix loss making state companies, and finalise a $12.5 billion debt rework with bondholders.

Rising poverty levels, corruption and policy gridlock are also concerns, analysts said, adding that the crisis may have eroded the previously strong SLPP vote base, making the outcome of its alliance with Wickremesinghe unpredictable.

“People are silently waiting to give their decision on election day,” said political scientist Prof. Jayadeva Uyangoda.

“It is actually judgement time for Sri Lanka.”

'Judgement time for Sri Lanka' as President Wickremesinghe fails to get enough support for re-election bid

Avinash Dubey, a civil services aspirant, has written to Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, calling for urgent action against officials responsible for the deaths of three fellow aspirants killed in a rain-flooded basement of a coaching centre in New Delhi last week.

In his letter, Dubey asked the Supreme Court to direct authorities to find a permanent solution to the persistent waterlogging issues plaguing areas like Rajinder Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar, which are major coaching hubs in Delhi.

Dubey wrote that students in these neighbourhoods face severe hardships due to annual flooding. He accused the "apathy" of the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for disastrous water-logging.

The incident occurred on July 27, when three civil services aspirants were killed after the basement of a building, housing a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar, was inundated after heavy rains.

Dubey's letter said that the recurring waterlogging in areas like Rajinder Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar has been a long-standing issue, and added that it's due to the MCD's "negligence" that the issue persists.

"Due to clogging of drains, floodwater reaches inside the houses. We have to walk in knee-deep drain water... Due to the apathy of the Delhi government and municipal corporation, students are living a life of hell," Dubey wrote.

He further accused the authorities of forcing students to live in sub-human conditions.

Dubey urged the Chief Justice to hold those responsible accountable and to protect the fundamental rights of students.

"The safety and health of students in these centres are at serious risk due to waterlogging. Students need a safe and healthy environment to study without fear and contribute to the development of the country," Dubey's letter continued.

Following the incident, the Delhi Police have arrested the owner and the coordinator of the coaching centre, Rau's IAS Study Circle, on charges including culpable homicide.

Former United States President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump reiterated remarks made on Friday (Jul 26) and suggested that Christians would never need to vote again if he wins the presidency in November.

However, the former president denied any intention to stay in office beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms during an interview with Fox News on Monday (Jul 29).

The recent controversy began with Trump's comments on Friday, where he told the crowd, "Get out and vote, just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what? It will be fixed, it will be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians."

The statement sparked outrage among Democrats who labelled it as authoritarian and anti-democratic.

But in a Monday (July 29) interview with Fox News, Trump attempted to clarify his comments while attempting to throw the spotlight on low voter turnout from the Christian community.

"I said, vote for me, you’re not going to have to do it ever again. It’s true," he said. "Because we have to get the vote out. Christians are not known as a big voting group. They don’t vote. And I’m explaining that to them. You never vote. This time, vote. I’ll straighten out the country, you won’t have to vote anymore. I won’t need your vote."

When the host Laura Ingraham pointed out that Democrats interpreted his remarks as suggesting the end of future elections, the former president responded by saying that he was unaware of such interpretations.

He told Ingraham that he would leave office after four years if reelected, stating, “Of course. By the way … I did last time.”

Donald Trump repeats 'you won't have to vote any more' claim

Thousands of furious Venezuelans took to the streets in and beyond the capital Caracas on Monday (July 29), with fresh protests expected on July 30 against what they describe as 'a stolen election'. Ordinary citizens of the South American nation as well as opposition politicians tore down posters of President Nicolas Maduro across Caracas.

The country's electoral council loyal to President Maduro announced that he won a third term in voting after Sunday (July 30).

The opposition, which polls had predicted would win by a landslide, claimed it took more than two-thirds of the votes in the oil-rich country.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) gave Maduro 51 per cent of the votes, against 44 per cent for Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, the proxy for wildly popular opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.

Courts loyal to Maduro barred Machado from running for president earlier this year, citing what she and many Venezuelans call bogus corruption charges.
