Addressing a press conference with European Union's (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, Prime Minister Al Thani said, "The challenges that remain in the negotiations are very minor compared to the bigger challenges, they are more logistical, they are more practical." "The deal is going through ups and downs from time to time throughout the last few weeks. But I think that you know, I'm now more confident that we are close enough to reach a deal that can bring people safely back to their homes, whether they are the hostages on Hamas side or whatever the exchange that will happen, will take place from the Israeli side," he added. Also read: As Israel-Hamas war rages on, militant group's top brass enjoys luxury far from conflict Since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas on Oct 7, Qatar became a key intermediary over the fate of hundreds of Israeli hostages held by Hamas militants. Qatar has been brokering talks to free some of the 240 hostages in return for a temporary ceasefire, a mediation effort that has so far led to the release of four hostages. "The deal is going through ups and downs from time to time throughout the last few weeks," Prime Minister Al Thani also told reporters. US still pushing for hostage deal On Saturday, the United States said that it was still working to secure a deal between Israel and Hamas after a reported tentative agreement to free women and children held hostage in Gaza in exchange for a pause in the war. In a post on X, White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said, "We have not reached a deal yet, but we continue to work hard to get to a deal." Earlier, an article by the Washington Post said that all parties in the conflict would halt combat operations for at least five days while some hostages were released in batches, with overhead surveillance monitoring movement to police the pause. However, the Joe Biden administration denied any major breakthrough in the deal. Also on Saturday, White House Coordinator for Middle East and North America Brett McGurk said there would be no significant pause in the conflict before hostages were released. McGurk said that the release of a large number of hostages would result in "a significant pause... and a massive surge of humanitarian relief." He also said that the situation in the Gaza Strip was "horrific" and "intolerable". Voting for the presidential election in Argentina started on Sunday (Nov 19) as voters sought a solution to the triple-digit inflation and rising poverty. This election is a battle between embattled Economy Minister Sergio Massa and the libertarian outsider Javier Milei.

Voting for the presidential election in Argentina started on Sunday (Nov 19) as voters sought a solution to the triple-digit inflation and rising poverty. This election is a battle between embattled Economy Minister Sergio Massa and the libertarian outsider Javier Milei. The two leaders represent starkly different futures for Argentina. According to a report by the news agency AFP, polls showed Milei holds a slight advantage over Massa. Irrespective of whoever wins, the election will shape the South American country's political landscape, its economic roadmap, trade in grains, lithium, and hydrocarbons, and its global ties. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, Julio Burdman, director of the consultancy Observatorio Electoral said that the election will mark a profound rupture in the system of political representation. "I think all the political forces as we have known them are going to be transformed," Burdman added. New president will take office on Dec 10 The new president will take office on Dec 10. Massa, 51, is a seasoned politician seeking to convince citizens to trust him despite his performance as economy minister which saw Argentina's annual inflation hit a high of 143 per cent. Milei, on the other hand, has vowed to halt Argentina's unbridled spending, ditch the peso for the US dollar, and "dynamite" the central bank. An economist by profession, Milei, 53, is a political newcomer who stunned observers by surging to the front of the electoral race just months ago, AFP reported. His rants against traditional political parties in the country that have failed to halt decades of economic decline have fired up voters tired of the status quo. Speaking to AFP, taxi driver Daniel Ayala rooted for Milei and said he was "tired of the corruption" of the ruling Peronist coalition -which Massa represents. The political newcomer previously said he was going to ditch those ministries entirely and was in favour of making it easier to carry guns and even sell human organs. In the run-up to the election, Massa sought to distance himself from outgoing President Alberto Fernandez and his Vice President Cristina Kirchner, who was last year convicted of fraud. AFP reported that the economy minister has portrayed himself as the calm, statesmanlike opposite of Milei. However, he was accused by analysts of abusing state resources to boost his electoral chances. This included using ads to warn that transport prices would increase under Milei as well as slashing income taxes for almost the whole population and granting cash payouts to millions. Netanyahu's office condemns hijacking Sharing a post on X, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office condemned the hijacking of the ship. "This is another act of Iranian terrorism and constitutes a leap forward in Iran's aggression against the citizens of the free world, with international consequences regarding the security of global shipping lanes." The office also said that onboard the vessel were crews of various nationalities, including Ukrainian, Mexican and Filipino. Houthis threaten to attack Israeli ships in Red Sea On Tuesday, Houthis threatened to target Israeli ships in the Red Sea. Leader Abdul-Malik al-Huthi said that Houthis were monitoring for Israeli vessels in the commercially vital waters, even those that do not have Israeli flags. "Our eyes are open to constant monitoring and searching for any Israeli ship," he said in a speech broadcast by the rebels' Al-Masirah TV station. "The enemy relies on camouflage in its movement in the Red Sea, especially in Bab al-Mandab (strait), and did not dare to raise Israeli flags on its ships... and turned off identification devices," he added. The threat comes as Houthis said they launched yet another missile targeting Israel over its war with Hamas. Since October, the Iran-backed rebels have launched a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Herzog said on Sunday (Nov 19) that his country was hopeful that a significant number of Israeli hostages could be released by Hamas in the coming days.

Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Herzog said on Sunday (Nov 19) that his country was hopeful that a significant number of Israeli hostages could be released by Hamas in the coming days. In an interview with ABC News, Herzog said, "We are hopeful that we can get a significant number of hostages freed in the coming days. I don't want to go into the details of these talks. They are obviously very sensitive. The less we go into the details, the better the chances of such a deal. But they are very serious efforts, and I'm hopeful that we can have a deal in the coming days." Herzog said that Israel was talking about a pause "in the fighting for a few days so we can get the hostages out." However, he pointed out that this would not be a ceasefire. "Our forces are not there in order to reoccupy Gaza, to govern Gaza. It is not our desire. It's not our wish. We do not wish to take territory from Gaza. That's not the intention. Our intention is to dismantle the Hamas terror machine," the ambassador added. "What I can say at this point is that some of the outstanding areas of disagreement, in a very complicated, very sensitive negotiation, have been narrowed," White House Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer told NBC. Finer also said Israel should not conduct combat operations against Hamas in the south of Gaza until military planners have taken into account the safety of fleeing Palestinian civilians. The Israeli forces claimed on Sunday (Nov 19) that they uncovered a tunnel under Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital that stretched 55 metres beneath the complex where troops have been conducting a major operation. In a statement, the army said, "IDF (Israel Defense Forces) troops exposed a 55-meter-long terror tunnel 10 metres deep underneath the Shifa hospital complex." In a separate post on X, the IDF shared a two-minute-long video that showed a blast door and a firing hole. The Al-Shifa hospital, which is the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip, has become a focal point of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli military has claimed that Hamas is using the medical facility as a base. Hamas, and medical staff, have denied the accusations. Al-Shifa a 'death zone': WHO Earlier on Sunday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that the Al-Shifa hospital has become a "death zone", as it announced plans to evacuate the facility. The WHO, however, warned that nearby facilities were already overstretched and urged an immediate ceasefire given the "extreme suffering of the people of Gaza". On Saturday, hundreds of people fled the hospital on foot on orders from the Israeli army, according to the facility's director, a report by the news agency AFP said. Columns of sick and injured -- some of them amputees -- were seen leaving with displaced people, doctors, and nurses, as loud explosions were heard around the complex. Meanwhile, the United Nations said that Palestinian medics evacuated 31 premature babies from the hospital, adding preparations were underway for them to enter Egypt. They were taken to a hospital in the southern Gaza city of Rafah where they were "receiving urgent care in the neonatal intensive care unit", the UN added. More than 200 mobsters and their white-collar helpers were convicted by an Italian court on Monday (Nov 20) after nearly a three-year-long trial against the notorious 'Ndrangheta mafia. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the president of the court in southern Vibo Valentia, Brigida Cavasino, steadily read out the names of the guilty and their sentences, which ranged from 30 years to a few months. The report said that prosecutors asked for sentences totalling nearly 5,000 years for 322 accused mafia members operating in the Calabrian province of Vibo Valentia and their white-collar collaborators. However, after the trial, the court doled out just about half that total time, with convictions of 207 defendants including four seasoned members of the 'Ndrangheta each sentenced to 30 years in jail. The panel acquitted 131 defendants, including 16 for whom prosecutors had recommended acquittal. The largest mafia trial in decades This is the largest mafia trial in Italy in decades and marks the most significant blow to one of the world's most powerful organised crime syndicates. Since the trial started in January 2021, the court heard thousands of hours of testimony, including from more than 50 former mafia operatives turned state witnesses, detailing countless examples of the 'Ndrangheta's brutality and its control over the territory. The accusations against the mafia group included carrying out violent ambushes, shaking down business owners, rigging public tenders, stockpiling weapons, collecting votes, or passing kickbacks to the powerful. However, Luigi Mancuso, the territory's undisputed boss, was cut from the defendants' list last year and will be tried separately. Concerns over low turnout at court The court also handed a 10-year prison sentence to a high-ranking member of the financial police working within Italy's anti-mafia department. AFP reported that the official was guilty of passing along details from judicial investigations to the 'Ndrangheta. Monday's trial was attended by hundreds of lawyers and journalists. Also present at the court was local businessman Rocco Mangiardi who was one of the first people to denounce the 'Ndrangheta for extortion before a judge in 2009. Mangiardi, who has lived under police escort ever since expressed concerns about the low turnout and told AFP that the courtroom should have been full of citizens. "To show the judges that we're on their side and then to tell the mafiosi with their presence 'We don't want you," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (Nov 20) that Washington's support for Kyiv was for the long haul. "The message that I bring you today, Mr President, is that the United States of America is with you, we will remain with you for the long haul," Austin told Zelensky as he paid a visit to Kyiv to reassure Ukraine on US support in its fight against Russia.

In a statement, the Pentagon said that Austin visited Ukraine to meet "with Ukrainian leaders and reinforce the staunch support of the United States for Ukraine's fight for freedom."

"He will also underscore the continued US commitment to providing Ukraine with the security assistance it needs to defend itself from Russian aggression," the statement added. This was Austin's second trip to Ukraine since Russia launched an offensive last year.

Austin also told Zelensky that under his leadership, Ukraine defended its sovereignty and has fought valiantly.

"You (Zelensky) have led the Ukrainian people to do things that were unimaginable to most people from the very beginning. And so we've seen grit, ingenuity. We've seen courage on the part of the Ukrainian people that has really impressed the world," he added.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the US has provided tens of billions of dollars in security aid for Ukraine and repeatedly pledged to back Kyiv for "as long as it takes."

However, hardline Republican lawmakers have opposed this assistance.

Till now, the US has been the biggest donor of military assistance to Kyiv, and a cut to American aid would be a major blow to Ukraine as it is preparing for the second winter of the war.

Last month, Austin and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged lawmakers to sustain support for Ukraine, with the US defence chief said that without Washington's support, Russian President Vladimir Putin would be successful.

Apart from the Ukraine, the US has also insisted that it can provide assistance to Israel in its intensifying conflict against Hamas.

US will remain with war-torn Ukraine for 'long haul': Pentagon chief

Around 500 employees at OpenAI have threatened to leave the artificial intelligence (AI) firm unless the board resigns and reinstates Sam Altman as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) along with co-founder Greg Brockman. According to a report by Wired on Monday (Nov 20), these 490 employees wrote a letter to the board saying, "The process through which you terminated Sam Altman and removed Greg Brockman from the board has jeopardized all of this work and undermined our mission and company."

“Your conduct has made it clear you did not have the competence to oversee OpenAI,” the letter added. This letter just comes hours after it was announced Altman and Brockman would be joining Microsoft to head a new advanced AI research unit.

The staff also said that they would join Altman at Microsoft unless their demands were met.

The report said that one of the signatories of this letter was OpenAI's Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever who is also a member of the board. Sutskever was blamed for coordinating the coup against Altman in the first place.

In a post on X, he said, "I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company."
