Tennis great and gay rights trailblazer Martina Navratilova has slammed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its lack of leadership on the issue of the inclusion of transgender athletes in sport. 
The issue was brought into focus by last weekend`s decision by swimming`s governing body FINA to ban athletes who have been through any part of male puberty from elite women`s competition.

IOC last year revised its guidelines on inclusion with a new framework advising that athletes should not be excluded from the competition on the grounds of "perceived" unfair advantage but leaving it up to sports federations to decide the rules.

Navratilova said that striking the balance between inclusion and fairness down to individual events was extremely complex and that the IOC had offloaded responsibility for the issue onto sometimes poorly funded federations.

"The IOC has completely punted," the 59-times Grand Slam champion told The Australian newspaper. "That `Oh, we will leave it up to the individual federations`. How can these individual federations within their country make their different rules? "They have to do the research and the implementation ... and it costs money to then figure it out, and it`s impossible."

In what was a shocking incident, USA swimmer Anita Alvarez was rescued from the bottom of the pool by her coach Andrea Fuentes on Wednesday (June 22). Four-time Olympic medalist Fuentes also shed light on the reason behind Anita fainting, while talking to the&nbsp;Spanish radio. She signalled out that this happened due to&nbsp;the effort she exerted while carrying out&nbsp;her routine.

"She only had water in her lungs, once she started breathing again everything was OK," said Fuentes. "It felt like a whole hour. I said things weren't right, I was shouting at the lifeguards to get into the water, but they didn't catch what I said or they didn't understand."

"She wasn't breathing ... I went as quickly as I could as if it were an Olympic final," Fuentes added. "It was very intense," Fuentes told AS newspaper, as quoted by AFP. "I think she was at least two minutes without breathing because her lungs were full of water. But we were able to take her to a good place, she vomited the water, coughed and that was it, but it was a big scare," she further mentioned.

Thus, in what could've been a devastating and disheartening incident, it turned out to be a narrow escape for the US swimmer.&nbsp;

"We sometimes forget that this happens in other high-endurance sports. Marathon, cycling, cross country ... we all have seen images, where some athletes don't make it to the finish line and others, help them to get there."

"Our sport is no different than others, just in a pool, we push through limits and sometimes we find them. Anita feels good now and the doctors also say she is OK. Currently, both Pant and Gill are part of India's Test line-up, which is gearing up for their rescheduled fifth and final match versus Ben Stokes-led England, on July 1 in Edgbaston. The duo will now look to take India to their first-ever series win on English soil since 2007 as India lead the incomplete five-match Tests 2-1.
