<p>Both radical left and right-wing parties in the country have vehemently opposed the proposal after a minister confirmed that Paris was looking favourably at Riyadh’s request to install a national pavilion, another push by the Arab nation to cement its position as the global sporting hub.</p>

<h2><strong>Why Les Invalides?</strong></h2>

<p>Olympic archery events are slated to be held in the long Esplanade Park of Les Invalides. Some events will be held by the iconic Eiffel Tower.</p>

<p>Macron's administration kept mum on the Saudi proposal until Nathalie Serre, a conservative MP, demanded information in a ­parliamentary question. Answering the question, French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed that the government was giving it a “sympathetic view”.</p>

<p>“Saudi Arabia is committed to ­respecting the security and financial measures of Les Invalides” and that Riyadh was an “important defence partner”. Many countries were ­setting up national pavilions in Paris for the games, he was quoted as saying.</p>

<h2><strong>Why the controversy?</strong></h2>

<p>The idea of the pavilion, which would be erected in May and last for four months, is being seen as an attempt to breach the country’s historic treasure by the opposition.</p>

Citing a government statement, a report by the news agency Reuters on Monday said that to restore order, the government has imposed curfew with immediate effect&nbsp;throughout the West territory for a "renewable period of seventy-two hours."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The curfew will apply between six in the evening and five in the morning from Sunday to Wednesday, the statement said. It added that law enforcement officers, firefighters, ambulance drivers, health personnel and duly identified journalists would not be required to comply with the curfew.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Violence, damaged communications, prison breaks</strong></h2>

<p>The government's instructions came after a dramatic escalation of violence over the weekend&nbsp;paralysed parts of Port-au-Prince, damaged communications and led to two prison breaks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Saturday night, armed groups attacked the country's largest prison. Reuters reported it was unclear how many inmates were on the run. However, sources close to the penitentiary said the numbers were overwhelming.</p>

<p>The prison breaks came as gang leader Jimmy Cherizier called for criminal groups to unite and overthrow Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Cherizier, a former police officer, heads an alliance of gangs and faces sanctions from the United Nations (UN) and the United States (US).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this week, he warned locals to keep children from going to school to "avoid collateral damages" as violence surged in the prime minister's absence.</p>

<p>"Gas emission and thermal anomalies were detected through satellite systems," said the ministry in a statement. It added that while they would continue to monitor the volcano, the eruption is not expected to affect tourism on the islands.</p>

<p>It said that La Cumbre blew a gas cloud about three kilometres into the air, which was dispersed by the wind without passing over other islands with human settlements, such as the neighbouring Isabela.</p>

<p>La Cumbre has previously erupted three times — in 2017, 2018 and 2020. It stands 1,463 metres (4,799.87 feet) high and has the highest eruption rate among all the volcanoes in the archipelago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This eruption was likely bigger than those previously registered, authorities said.</p>
