United Airlines said that Boeing was responsible for a $200 million (£161mn) hit to its earnings in the initial three months of the year.

For three weeks, the carrier had to ground its Boeing 737 MAX 9 fleet after its door blew out mid-air on an Alaska Airlines flight in January.&nbsp;

Thousands of flights were cancelled by United Airlines and Alaska Airlines as inspections were carried out in January before the planes resumed clearance from the US aviation regulator to resume flying.

A leading contender to become the Solomon Islands' next prime minister has vowed to rip up a security pact with China, as the Pacific nation began counting votes Thursday in a pivotal general election.

Prominent opposition figure Peter Kenilorea further underlined the stakes by pledging to scrap a contentious security pact inked with China in 2022.

"If we are in government, we will abolish the security treaty," leadership aspirant Kenilorea told AFP from his village base on the island of Malaita.

"We don't think that it's beneficial to the Solomon Islands," the former top diplomat said.

Incumbent Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has championed deeper ties with Beijing since coming to power in 2019.

The United States and Australia -- two of Solomon Islands' traditional security partners -- fear this pact could one day pave the way for a Chinese military base.

Kenilorea, a former United Nations official, lamented his country's uneasy position in the middle of the world's two largest military and economic powers, China and the United States.

"We don't have natural enemies," he said.

"It has put us on the map for the wrong reasons. To raise tensions unnecessarily here, in the geopolitical scheme of things, is something we don't really need."

<h2>'Blatantly misleading'</h2>

Ballots were trucked into a heavily guarded counting centre in the capital Honiara on Thursday morning, watched over by international teams of uniformed Fijian soldiers and Australian police.

Startling and unproven claims of foreign interference upped the ante for what was already billed as Solomon Islands' most crucial vote in a generation.

State-backed Chinese news outlets have pushed reports that the United States might orchestrate riots and unrest to block Sogavare from returning to power.

As per the government's plans, the legal age for the purchase of cigarettes will annually increase from the age of 18 and will go beyond the pension age so as to make smoking obsolete.

However, the government doesn't aim to criminalise smoking which means that anybody who can legally purchase cigarettes won't be stopped from buying it in the future.

Till 2043, only those who are aged 35 or above will be able to purchase cigarettes legally and shopkeepers will be able to seek the ID of those seeking to purchase tobacco.

The legislation also includes new restrictions on flavours and a ban on disposable vapes, with only four flavours of vape set to be allowed.

One in three Americans aren't convinced that former United States president Donald Trump committed a crime, according to a recent poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The second day of the historic trial in New York began&nbsp;on Tuesday (Apr 16) with the Republican frontrunner in a Manhattan courtroom for the jury selection.&nbsp;

On Monday (Apr 15), Trump, 77, set yet another record by becoming the first-ever former US president to go on trial for criminal charges which stem from the case where he has been accused of paying hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels and falsifying business records to cover the payments.

The AP-NORC poll found that one-third of American adults surveyed believe that Trump did something illegal in the case. The former president has three other criminal cases pending against him.&nbsp;

Notably, only half of Americans would consider the presumptive Republican presidential nominee unfit for the presidency if he were to get convicted in the case, according to the poll.&nbsp;

While a jury would decide if Trump is guilty or not, the report by AP-NORC suggests that a conviction could hurt the former president’s campaign as it seems all but certain that the upcoming presidential election will be a rematch between him and his successor Joe Biden.&nbsp;

However, Trump has repeatedly called the cases against him politically motivated and that Biden engineered them. The rhetoric has helped him garner GOP support, but has not swayed the independents, reported AP.

The poll of 1,204 adults was conducted between April 4 and 8 and also showed that only three in 10 believe that the prosecutors are treating Trump fairly.&nbsp;

The report also said that only two in 10 Americans are extremely or very confident that the judges and jurors in the cases against him can be fair and impartial.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to the 34-count indictment, brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, which includes charges of accounting fraud and falsifying business records to cover up the $130,000 payment to Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.&nbsp;

The former president has also denied having sex with Daniels. However, at least 35 per cent of Americans believe that Trump has done something illegal with regard to the hush money allegations, as per the AP-NORC poll.&nbsp;

A new study warns that climate change could cut global economic output by 20 per cent&nbsp;by 2050. Researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) published their findings in Nature on Wednesday (April 18).

As per the PIK’s calculations, countries meet ambitious emission-cutting&nbsp;goals, but as many of them fall short, the actual damage could be even worse.

The study estimates climate change could cost the global economy a staggering $38 trillion every year by 2050. This is six times more expensive than the estimated cost of limiting global temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The study further states that despite damage affecting various regions to different degrees, poorer regions and those contributing least to global warming will be hit hardest.

Anders Levermann, a senior PIK scientist, says, “Countries that are least responsible for climate change are expected to suffer income loss that is 60&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;more than the higher-income countries and 40&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;greater than higher-emission countries.”

The industrial economies of Germany and the United States would shrink by roughly 11 per cent&nbsp;by mid-century (13&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;for France), even if climate action is properly taken, according to the researchers.

PIK researchers built their analysis on 40 years of climate data from over 1,600 regions. These estimates don't include the additional costs of extreme weather events like storms and fires, which climate change is also worsening.

"High-income losses are projected for most regions, including North America and Europe, with South Asia and Africa being the hardest hit," according to Maximilian Kotz, one of the study's authors. "These losses are caused by a wide range of economically relevant effects of climate change, such as consequences for agricultural yields, labor productivity and infrastructure."

As per the World Bank, global GDP surpassed $100 trillion in 2022 and is expected to double by 2050, if not for the drag of climate change.

Some experts believe the PIK estimate is likely an understatement of the true economic impact of climate change. This aligns with the findings of the Stern Report, a 2006 analysis by economist Nicholas Stern commissioned by the UK government, which reached similar conclusions.

This is six times more expensive than the estimated cost of limiting global temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. "We need this money yesterday, not tomorrow, not today," said the Ukrainian leader about the much-awaited US assistance.

"Or, there will be many conflicts, many such kinds of wars, and in the end of the day, it could lead to the Third World War," warned Shmyhal.

Earlier, too, Ukraine has voiced similar alarming warnings about the possible consequences its defeat in the battle with Russia will bring. Just last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that after Ukraine, Russia would move on to invade Poland, triggering World War III.
