Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold talks with his Serbian counterpart in Belgrade on Wednesday, as Beijing seeks to deepen its political and economic ties with friendlier countries in Europe.

China has poured billions into Serbia and neighbouring Balkan countries, particularly into mining and manufacturing, and last year Beijing and Belgrade signed a free trade agreement.&nbsp;

Xi arrived in the Serbian capital Tuesday night after a state visit to France that saw sometimes robust exchanges with President Emmanuel Macron on topics including trade and China's continued close ties to Russia despite the Ukraine war.

But the other two countries chosen by Xi for his first trip to Europe since 2019 -- with Hungary as the final stop after Serbia -- are seen as among the most sympathetic to Moscow in Europe.&nbsp;

In Belgrade, the Chinese leader will meet President Aleksandar Vucic for talks on Wednesday, before heading to Budapest.

Serbian finance minister Sinisa Mali told state broadcaster RTS that discussions Wednesday would centre on "a great project".&nbsp;

Streets in the Serbian capital were decked out with Chinese flags for the visit, along with posters and billboards that proclaimed a "warm welcome" to "Chinese friends".&nbsp;

<h2>NATO bombing</h2>

Xi's visit to Belgrade will also coincide with the 25th anniversary of the 1999 US bombing of the Chinese embassy there, which killed three people.&nbsp;

The embassy was hit during a months-long, US-led NATO campaign targeting Serbian security forces who were waging a brutal war against ethnic-Albanian insurgents in Kosovo.

The US later apologised, saying that outdated maps had led the pilot to strike the wrong target.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Xi wrote in Serbian daily Politika that NATO had "flagrantly bombed the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia", warning that China would "never allow such tragic history to repeat itself".&nbsp;

He also hailed the "ironclad friendship" between China and Serbia, which he said was "forged with the blood of our compatriots".

A barrage of severe storms battered the Midwest on Tuesday (May 7), unleashing heavy rain, strong gusts of wind, and tornadoes across the region, just a day after a deadly tornado ripped through Oklahoma town killing at least one person and injuring five.

According to local media outlets multiple tornadoes touched down in southern Michigan throughout the day, causing damage to several buildings. Thankfully, there were no casualties reported.

This severe storm came right after a series of tornadoes hit Oklahoma the previous day. The reports from local media described extensive damage to homes and trees uprooted in the northeastern part of the state.

 
According to the National Weather Service, tornadoes were spotted in parts of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, while parts of Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri were also under a tornado watch.

In southwestern Michigan, two tornadoes struck the city of Portage near Kalamazoo. The sheriff’s office there said multiple trees and power lines were down in the area. A FedEx building was destroyed and delivery vehicles were also hit, but a company spokesperson said there were no serious injuries despite the damage.

A report by 9News on Tuesday said that Patterson is accused of killing her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson. The Pattersons and Wilkinson died in a hospital days after they had lunch at Erin's residence in Leongatha last year. The report said that Erin faced the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court via video link from prison, wearing a blue jumper and glasses. A poisonous mushroom lunch On July 29, 2023, Erin hosted a lunch at her home. The guests were Don and Gail Patterson (both aged 70), Heather (aged 66) and her husband Ian (aged 68), a report by BBC said. Hours after eating the mushroom which police believe was the death cap mushroom, all four guests fell ill with what they initially thought was food poisoning. Death cap mushrooms are extremely poisonous, and eating them may lead to liver and kidney damage as well as death. Erin was named as a suspect by police since she appeared unharmed after the lunch. Following months of investigation, detectives allegedly uncovered another three murder attempts the 49-year-old made against Simon between 2021 and 2022. She was arrested in November last year and charged with eight offences - three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder. 'Not guilty, Your Honour' On Tuesday, Erin told the court she was not guilty as the charges against her were read. The woman elected not to have a committal, fast-tracking her court process to face trial at the Supreme Court of Victoria. "The collapse occurred just after 2 pm (1200 GMT) today, 6 May with a construction crew of approximately 70 on site," it said.

CCTV footage obtained by Reuters showed a cloud of dust as the building crumbled.

"I saw one guy was working and then 'boom' and I saw the whole building collapsed... I'm also traumatised. It is very sad," Theresa Jeyi, a local councillor, told reporters at the scene.

State-owned broadcaster SABC earlier reported that more than 40 people were trapped under the rubble.

The provincial government said it was monitoring the situation.

During the Second World War (1 Sept 1939–2 Sept 1945), more than six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis. Over the years, volunteers by scouring through statements and documents, checking film footage, cemeteries, and other records have managed to track down information on 4.9 million individuals. However, many remain missing from the pages of history.

Talking to Reuters, Esther Fuxbrumer, head of software development at the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Centre, said there were huge gaps in their existing nine&nbsp;million records.&nbsp;

The Nazis "just took people, shot them, and covered them in a pit. And there was no one left to tell about them," remarked Fuxbrumer.

"It's very hard for a human being to do it - just to go over everything and not miss any details," she said.&nbsp;

Moreover, the volunteers have had to face the mammoth task of linking individuals to dates, family members and other details, watching for duplicates and comparing accounts.&nbsp;

To ease this strain, researchers have developed the AI system. Developed over the last two years, the system can sift through records in English, Hebrew, German, Russian and other languages. It is currently undergoing tests.

<h2>How capable is the AI?</h2>

The software has already proven its capabilities.&nbsp;

"That technology works very fast. It takes a few hours to go over hundreds of testimonies and it's very exact, the results," said Fuxbrumer.

"We saw that from each testimony we could get between six or seven names with full details that we could put automatically into our database, and around 10 per cent of the names that we found we had already in our database, but 90 per cent are new names that we didn't know about."

As part of the trials, the researchers are running tests on 400 of the 30,000 testimonies they have. Already, they have added 1,500 new names to their records, and as per Esther Fuxbrumer, many more were expected in the coming weeks&nbsp;when the system is used on all 30,000 testimonies. The next phase will cover diaries.

"We believe that way we'll be able to bring a lot of stories about a lot of victims that were killed, little kids that no one else knew, to tell us the story about what happened to them," stated the researcher.

Just&nbsp;ahead of&nbsp;the meeting,&nbsp;Poland's&nbsp;State Protection Service spotted the bugging devices during a regular security check. The development comes amid Poland emerging as a hub of spying activity as it becomes a channel for Western military aid to Ukraine.

Polish authorities are now determining who planted the devices there and whether any foreign hand was involved.&nbsp;

“The State Protection Service, in co-operation with the Internal Security Agency, detected and dismantled devices that could be used for eavesdropping,"&nbsp;wrote security services spokesman Jacek Dobrzynski on X.&nbsp;"The services are carrying out further activities in this matter."

The police are probing links between the alleged assailants and three additional killings in Canada, including the murder of an 11-year-old boy in Edmonton, the reports said.

The Canadian police, as per CBC News, will share details about the ones arrested later in the day.

The report further said that the alleged assailants are likely the associates of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently behind bars in India over plotting the killing of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala.

As per another news outlet CTV news, court documents showed the three arrested are Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh and Karan Brar.&nbsp;

They face one count of first-degree murder and a count of conspiracy to commit murder.

The development comes against the backdrop of strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada after Ottawa accused New Delhi of having a role in the killing of Nijjar in June 2023.&nbsp;

The activists marched from Hunter College, where the pro-Palestinian activist organisation Within Our Lifetime conducted a "Day of Rage" event beginning at 5 pm before marching to the Metropolitan Gala. Protesters were confronted with a large police presence, and many individuals were arrested by New York Police Department officers.

Within Our Lifetime wrote on X, "DISCLOSE! DIVEST! WE WILL NOT STOP WE WILL NOT REST! From the encampments to the streets NYC stands with Rafah!"
