The Biden administration has proposed a new rule which it says will streamline asylum processing at the southern border. The Thursday (May 9) proposal seeks to deny certain migrants deemed to "pose a national security or public safety risk".

As per reports, the proposed rules would allow immigration officials to reject and deport at an early stage violent asylum seekers who are already ineligible for asylum. This, as per the Biden administration officials, would help enhance national security and save taxpayer dollars.

The Guardian reports that the rule would target migrants "convicted of a particularly serious crime," or who have "participated in the persecution of others."

Additionally, it will also target migrants who are deemed a danger to the security of the United States on reasonable grounds or those inadmissible on "terrorism-related grounds," said a memo distributed by the Department of Homeland Security.

No. Federal law already bars asylum migrants who are believed to pose a threat to national security or public safety. However, with the new rule, asylum officers would be empowered to consider their ineligibility during initial screening due to "credible fear".&nbsp;

"We will continue to take action, but fundamentally it is only Congress that can fix what everyone agrees is a broken immigration system," he added in a statement.

The rules are set to be issued as a proposed regulation and will be finalised at a later date, reported Reuters citing an officer. The report added that the Biden administration had considered using more restrictive Trump-era restrictions to block asylum seekers.

Expected to be issued this week, the regulation would potentially pave the way for thousands of people to be quickly deported from the US each year.

Kelly also informed that the existing management team is still in place and they are working closely with the team to resume normal domestic operations and international operations as soon as possible.&nbsp;

Former chancellor under Boris Johnson, Zahawi on Thursday said, “I have come to feel that the time is right for a new, energetic Conservative to fight for the honour of representing Stratford-on-Avon and assuming the mantle of MP for Shakespeare. I will, of course, serve my constituents with dedication and determination until then.”

“My mistakes have been mine and my successes have come from working with amazing people,” he added.

Zahawi was sacked in 2023 by UK PM Rishi Sunak from the position of Conservative party chair after he failed to disclose an HMRC investigation into his tax affairs and was found to have violated the ministerial code.

Israel has communicated its reservations regarding Hamas's proposed terms for a hostage release, said the official.

The situation in Rafah worsened as Israeli forces launched attacks. In one airstrike on two homes in the Sabra neighbourhood, at least 12 people, including women and children, were killed.&nbsp;

Reuters reports that this includes a senior commander from the Al-Mujahedeen Brigades and his family. As per the group, the family of another group leader, medics, and relatives were also killed in the strike.

Another attack near a mosque killed at least three people and wounded several others.

Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad said their fighters responded by targeting Israeli tanks with anti-tank rockets and mortars on the eastern outskirts of the city.&nbsp;

Rafah is the biggest urban area in Gaza, not yet overrun by Israeli forces. Due to this, it has become the refuge for displaced Gazans from other bombarded areas with its population swelling to hundreds of thousands.

A senior Ukrainian military source said Russian forces had pushed 1 km inside the Ukrainian border near Vovchansk, Reuters reported. The source, who declined to be named, further said that the Russian forces were aiming to push Ukrainian troops as far back as 10 km inside Ukraine.&nbsp;

The source also said that Russia pushing in to create a buffer zone, which basically is a no-man's land and the advance checkpost will be manned by Russian troops. The move indicates that Moscow is apparently planning to make the region de facto Russian territory.&nbsp;
