This comes after the Republican lawmakers in the southern US state passed the bill which would criminalise possession of abortion pills without a prescription.&nbsp;

The signing of the bill makes Louisiana the only state in the US to categorise mifepristone and misoprostol – medicines that are used in medication abortions, the most common method of abortion in the United States – as controlled dangerous substances.&nbsp;

The legislation was&nbsp;passed by 64-29 in the state house and 29-7 in the state senate, and was later signed into law by Republican Governor Jeff Landry adding the abortion drugs to Schedule IV of the state’s Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law.

The possession of abortion drugs in question, without a prescription, would be punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

The bill exempts authorised medical practitioners from prosecution as well as pregnant women if they have the medication for their own use.&nbsp;

Opponents of the legislation, including many physicians, argued that abortion drugs have other critical reproductive health care uses and changing the classification would make it more difficult to prescribe the medicines, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Ahead of the passage of the bill, over 200 doctors in the state signed a letter to lawmakers warning that the measure could produce a “barrier to physicians’ ease of prescribing appropriate treatment” and cause unnecessary fear and confusion among both patients and physicians.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the supporters of the bill, as per AP have said that it would protect expectant mothers from coerced abortions, citing3&nbsp;one example of that happening in the state of Texas.&nbsp;

The new law will take effect on October 1.&nbsp;

US President Joe Biden called the move by Louisiana lawmakers “outrageous” and went on to blame his predecessor, Donald Trump.

“This is a direct result of Trump overturning Roe v. Wade,” said the US president in a statement by his campaign, referring to the landmark Supreme Court ruling that had enshrined the right to abortion in the US Constitution.&nbsp;

Before the conflict, extreme poverty was "virtually non-existent" said one report.&nbsp;

"Extreme poverty, while virtually non-existent before the conflict, affected more than one in four Syrians in 2022" and might have further deteriorated after a deadly earthquake last year, it said, as reported by AFP. Last year's earthquake killed about 6,000 people.

Even as the war ravages the economy, infrastructure, and industry in Syria, Lebanon's economic meltdown in late 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, have all contributed to the erosion of the welfare of Syrian households in recent years, says the report.&nbsp;

"Continued funding shortfalls and limited access to humanitarian assistance," have further strained poor Syrians, already coping with "soaring prices, reduced access to essential services and rising unemployment," said the World Bank.

In 2023,&nbsp;Syria's GDP was&nbsp;estimated at around $6.2 billion. In 2024, it is&nbsp;projected to contract by 1.5 per cent, "extending the 1.2 per cent decline in 2023," said the report.

Previously, the United Nations estimated that about 90 per cent of Syrians live in poverty. It also estimates that around two million live in extreme poverty conditions after more than a decade of the war.

In a conversation with AFP, the international agency said that its humanitarian 2024 response plan in Syria requires over $4 billion, but is only six per cent funded.

An Israeli drone strike in central Syria killed two Hezbollah fighters on Saturday (May 25), said a war monitor.

"An Israeli drone fired two missiles at a Hezbollah car and truck near the town of Qusayr in Homs province, as they were on their way to Al-Dabaa military airport, killing at least two Hezbollah fighters and wounding others," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

This was the third Israeli strike against Lebanon's Iran-backed targets in Syria in about a week's time.

Earlier, Israeli strikes hit the Qusayr area, in the vicinity of the Lebanese border, and killed two men, said Observatory, a Britain-based monitor with a network of sources in Syria.

At least one out of the deceased was a Hezbollah fighter, the news agency AFP reported citing a source of the militant group.

Another strike, on May 18, targeted "a Hezbollah commander and his companion", the Observatory said. It did not report any casualties.

Israel has repeatedly stated that it will not let its arch-foe Iran expand its presence in Syria.

Israel has carried out several strikes in Syria since the civil war in its northern neighbour broke out, primarily aiming at army positions and Iran-backed fighters including from Hezbollah.

The strikes multiplied since the outbreak of Israel's war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, on Oct 7, when the Palestinian militant group launched an unprecedented attack against Israel.

Last month, Syria had accused Israel of launching attacks targeting army positions.

In a later update in the incident, the organisation after a gap of three hours reported that the missionaries were killed by the gang at about 9 o'clock this evening. "We all are devastated," it posted.&nbsp;

Haitian Emergency Response Operations (HERO) retrieved the bodies and transported the remains of the American couple to a hospital morgue.

Lloyd's mother Alicia revealed that after the initial beating, neighbours checked on her son, but a second gang’s arrival escalated the situation.

David Lloyd recounted his last conversation with his son during the attacks. The mission and church across the street had security, but when they came out they&nbsp;were overwhelmed when three pickup trucks filled with armed men arrived.

Despite Davy’s desperate call for help, his father could not locate assistance.&nbsp;“He was begging me to find someone to get in there and help him, and I did all I could but I couldn’t locate anybody.”

More than 170 climate activists who had gathered outside the Paris headquarters of Amundi, one of the world’s biggest investment managers and a major TotalEnergies shareholder, were arrested, said the French police, on Friday (May 24).&nbsp;

This comes as shareholders of French oil and gas major TotalEnergies had gathered for their annual meeting where the company’s chief floated the plan to develop new oil fields to meet global demand.&nbsp;

<h2>Over 170 protesters arrested</h2>

The French police said that they arrested 173 people among hundreds who gathered outside the Paris headquarters of Amundi. &nbsp;

The arrests came after members of the climate movement Extinction Rebellion forced their way into Amundi’s office, where the company was holding its annual general meeting (AGM), and damaged the building by drawing graffiti on the walls and smashing some windows, said the police.&nbsp;

The company said eight of its security staff were injured during the altercation and that they would file a complaint and continue to be a major player in responsible investing.

Extinction Rebellion took to X and said that the company “has the power to prevent destructive fossil fuel projects such as the climate bomb EACOP,” referring to the East African Crude Oil Pipeline that TotalEnergies is developing in Uganda and Tanzania.

During the meeting on Friday, most shareholders backed the French oil and gas major’s strategy and its CEO. However, the support has reportedly weakened since last year as some investors called out its insufficient response to climate change.

TotalEnergies’ progress report on sustainability and climate goals for 2030 was approved by 79.7 per cent of the shareholders compared to 88.8 per cent votes it had garnered last year, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Some investors said they would oppose Pouyanne’s position due to his insufficient attention to climate concerns, but he was reappointed as Chairman and CEO for the duration of his term on the board.

Pouyanne told shareholders that higher oil prices prompted by insufficient fossil fuel output “would quickly become unbearable”. He noted that the demand for oil was growing in line with the global population.&nbsp;

Therefore, he proposed that new oil fields had to be developed to keep up with the demand.&nbsp;

Climate activists have accused TotalEnergies of contributing to global warming and the destruction of biodiversity through its gas and oil activities.

A member of the Fridays For Future youth climate action group described the decision to construct the EACOP as a “murderous path,” according to Reuters.&nbsp;
