<p>South Africa's ruling ANC was on track Friday to score its worst electoral result ever, with the latest tallies showing voters deserted the party in droves and ended its 30-year political dominance.</p>

<p>The African National Congress (ANC) is now all but certain to fall below 50 percent of the vote, forcing the party to seek a coalition partner to have enough backing to name a president and form a government.</p>

<p>This marks an historic evolution in the country's democratic journey, as the party has enjoyed an absolute parliamentary majority since 1994, when its then leader Nelson Mandela led the nation out of white minority rule and into democracy.</p>

<p>With more than two thirds of the votes cast in Wednesday's general election counted, the ANC remained in the lead but with a score below 42 percent, compared to the 57 percent it won in 2019 and far off the 62 percent secured by Mandela in 1994.</p>

<p>As votes continued to be validated, data from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) showed the centre-right Democratic Alliance (DA) held second place with 22.64 percent.</p>

<p>But it was not a surge by the DA that cut into the ANC's vote share.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But over, three decades of almost unchallenged rule, its leadership has been implicated in a series of large-scale corruption scandals, while the continent's most industrialised economy has languished and crime and unemployment figures have hit record highs.</p>

<p>"This network originated in China and targeted the global Sikh community, including in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, the UK, and Nigeria," Meta said in its Q1 2024 Adversarial Threat Report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UN General Assembly drew criticism on Thursday (May 30) for its tribute to the late Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash, with Washington boycotting the gathering.</p>

<p>Following a minute's silence, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres offered his condolences to the families of the victims of the May 19 incident, as well as to the Iranian people.</p>

<p>Asked about the UN chief offering condolences in the days after the leader's death, Guterres's official spokesman defended his position.</p>

<p>The Secretary-General "has never been shy about expressing his deep concerns about the human rights situation in Iran, notably on the issues of women," said Stephane Dujarric.</p>

<p>"It does not stop him from expressing condolences when the head of state of a Member State of this organization, and a foreign minister, with whom he met regularly… dies in a helicopter crash," he added.</p>

<p>The General Assembly pays tribute to any head of state of a UN member country who dies in office, including Namibian president Hage Geingob, an independence stalwart, last February, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in 2011.</p>

<p>Pakistan's ambassador to the UN, Munir Akram, spoke for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and hailed Raisi's "legacy" of "socio-economic and political transformation" in Iran.</p>

<p>No representatives of Western countries spoke at the tribute and some, such as France and the United States, did not send representatives.</p>

<p>"The UN should be standing with the people of Iran. Raisi was involved in numerous, horrific human rights abuses, including the extrajudicial killings of thousands of political prisoners in 1988," said spokesman for the US delegation, Nate Evans.</p>
