India lodged a formal protest with Canada on Thursday (June 20) after pro-Khalistani elements held a "citizens' court" in front of the Indian consulate building in Vancouver and set ablaze Prime Minister Narendra Modi's effigy.

New Delhi in a diplomatic note to the Canadian high commission conveyed India's strong disapproval of Khalistani extremists being given a free hand by the Justin Trudeau government.

The move comes after Canada's parliament held a moment of silence to mark the first anniversary of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's death.

Nijjar was designated a terrorist by New Delhi for fostering separatism in India's Punjab state and related acts of terrorism. He was the chief of Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) and was killed in a targeted shooting in Canada's Surrey, outside a British Columbia Gurudwara on June 18 last year.

Four Indian nationals, Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh, are accused of killing Nijjar.

In response to Canada's so-called 'moment of silence', the Indian Consulate General in Vancouver announced a memorial service in memory of 329 people killed in the 1985 Khalistani bombing of an Air India Kanishka aircraft.

The memorial service is scheduled to be held later this week on Sunday (June 23).

Taking to X, the Indian Consulate General said, "India stands at the forefront of countering the menace of terrorism and works closely with all nations to tackle this global threat. 23 June 2024 marks the 39th anniversary of the cowardly terrorist bombing of Air India flight 182 (Kanishka), in which 329 innocent victims, including 86 children, lost their lives in one of the most heinous terror-related air disasters in the history of civil aviation."

<h2>India summons Canada envoy over Khalistan slogans at event attended by Trudeau</h2>

Earlier, India had summoned the Canadian deputy high commissioner over the raising of pro-Khalistan slogans at an event in Toronto, Canada, which was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other political leaders.

"The Government of India's deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event. This illustrates once again the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and violence," said the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement.

Trudeau as well as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre attended the Khalsa Day celebrations in Toronto on Sunday (Apr 28) where loud chants of pro-Khalistan slogans were raised.

As the Canadian prime minister was set to address the public to mark Khalsa Day, the "Khalistan Zindabad" chants got louder, as seen in the video released by Canada-based CPAC TV.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow were also present at the event.

While speaking at a news conference in Vietnam, Putin reacted to a report from Yonhap news earlier on Thursday which said South Korea would review the possibility of supplying weapons to Ukraine in the aftermath of Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signing a mutual defence pact.&nbsp;

Putin visited North Korea before arriving in Vietnam - a visit which has angered the West.&nbsp;

"With regard to deliveries of lethal weapons to Ukraine to combat zones, this would be a very big mistake. If that happens, then we will take the according decision, which the current leadership of South Korea will probably not like," said Putin, further adding that Seoul had nothing to worry about the pact between Moscow and Pyongyang.&nbsp;

The South Korean military said dozens of North Korean soldiers breached the demarcation line, on Thursday (Jun 20) around 11:00 am (local time), prompting Seoul’s army personnel to broadcast warnings and fire warning shots after which Pyongyang’s soldiers retreated.&nbsp;

Hawaii, on Thursday (Jun 20) agreed to a “groundbreaking” legal settlement with young climate activists who filed a lawsuit accusing the US state of violating the state constitution by operating a transportation system which harmed the climate and infringed upon their right to a clean and healthy environment which would officials to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions.

<h2>What is the lawsuit about?</h2>

The settlement reached in Navahine v Hawaii Department of Transportation recognises the children’s constitutional rights to a life-sustaining climate and would require the US state to take action to decarbonise its transportation system in the next 21 years.&nbsp;

The lawsuit, by 13 young people aged between nine and 18, was filed in June 2022 and claimed that Hawaii’s pro-fossil fuel transportation policies violate their state constitutional rights.&nbsp;

The complaint accused the state of prioritising projects including highway expansion instead of those that cut carbon emissions like efforts to introduce electric vehicles and promote walking and cycling.&nbsp;

This, as per the lawsuit, has impacted the plaintiff’s ability to live “healthful lives in Hawaii now and into the future” and violated their right to a clean and healthy environment which is guaranteed by the state’s constitution.&nbsp;

The rising sea levels also threatened to put their lands underwater, the complaint said.

Notably, this was the first-ever youth-led climate case seeking zero emissions in transportation and the second-ever lawsuit in the United States filed by young people who claim their future and health are in jeopardy because of climate change and the state is violating their rights.&nbsp;

<h2>A ‘groundbreaking’ settlement</h2>

Governor of Hawaii Josh Green, a Democrat, announced the “groundbreaking” settlement at a news conference.&nbsp;

“We’re addressing the impacts of climate change today, and needless to say, this is a priority because we know now that climate change is here,” said Green. He added, “It is not something that we’re considering in an abstract way in the future.”

The settlement, which can be enforced in court, calls for the creation of a volunteer youth council to advise the state’s department of transport.&nbsp;

Hawaii, as part of the settlement, will develop a roadmap to achieve zero emissions for its ground, sea, and inner island air transportation systems by 2045.&nbsp;

The US state also plans to dedicate at least $40 million to expand its EV charging network by 2030 and ramp up efforts to improve Hawaii’s pedestrian, bicycle and public transit networks.

The state had sought dismissal of the case arguing that the zero emissions target and other state laws promoting reduced carbon emissions were “aspirational” and could not form the basis of the claim that the state is violating the young plaintiff’s rights.&nbsp;

However, Judge Jeffrey Crabtree in Honolulu rejected the argument in April last year saying that the laws required timely planning and action and that the state’s inaction has already harmed the plaintiffs.&nbsp;

“We have extremely tough goals to hit by 2045 and this is going to make sure we move forward much faster,” Ed Sniffen, the head of Hawaii’s transportation department.&nbsp;

<h2>Divestiture not feasible, says ByteDance</h2>

US has demanded that ByteDance must divest TikTok's US assets or face a nationwide ban, However,&nbsp;ByteDance argues that such divestiture is not feasible and said that the law was a "radical departure from this country’s tradition of championing an open Internet."

The company also argues that the potential ban "sets a dangerous precedent, allowing the political branches to target a disfavoured speech platform and force it to sell or be shut down."

TikTok's future in the US, as per a Reuters report, rests on a September 16 hearing when the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia will hear arguments on lawsuits filed by TikTok and ByteDance along with TikTok users.

<h2>DOJ case</h2>

As per Bloomberg, the DOJ will sue TikTok later this year on behalf of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Instead of pursuing claims that the application deceived US consumers by hiding that China-based employees of its parent company would have access to their personal and financial information, the lawsuit would charge the company with children's privacy violations.

<h2>Why does the US want to ban TikTok?</h2>

The law and the looming ban are driven by worries among US lawmakers that the app by China-based company ByteDance can be used by Beijing to spy on Americans or steal their data.

However, the company maintains that this law violates free speech rights and unfairly singles out TikTok while ignoring "many applications with substantial operations in China that collect large amounts of US user data, as well as the many US companies that develop software and employ engineers in China."

In its latest filing, the company argues that it was clear that TikTok posed no imminent national security risks because the law "allows TikTok to continue operating through the rest of this year -- including during an election that the very president who signed the bill says is existential for our democracy."

The defence pact has particularly irked the West, with White House national security spokesperson John Kirby calling it a cause of concern. According to Kirby, the pact shows Russia’s desperation.&nbsp;

"We've been talking about this and warning about a burgeoning defence relationship between these two countries now for many months through a series of downgraded intelligence that we’ve put out there," he said.

"Obviously it's something we've taken seriously," he added.&nbsp;

As many as 98 Indians&nbsp;died due to extreme heat during the annual Muslim pilgrimage of Hajj to Mecca, confirmed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday (June 21).

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a press briefing said that last year 187 people had died during the annual pilgrimage.

"This year, 1,75000 Indian pilgrims visited Mecca for Haj. The Haj period is from May 9 to July 22. This year, till now, 98 deaths have been reported," he said.

"The deaths have been due to natural causes, chronic illnesses, and old age. Six people died on the day of Arafat and four were accident-related deaths," Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing.

Every year, almost 1.8 million people from across the world visit Mecca to take part in a mostly outdoor pilgrimage. Hajj is considered one of the five pillars of Islam and Muslims with the means are advised to visit Mecca at least once in their lifetime.

Saudi Arabian authorities say the temperatures have risen 0.4 degrees each decade in the city, piling more misery on the faithful crowd.
