Global wildlife populations have declined by an average of 73 per cent in 50 years as humans continue to push ecosystems to the brink of collapse, according to a new scientific assessment.&nbsp;

The latest edition of the Living Planet report, issued on Thursday (Oct 10), by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), stated that despite such promises, the health of the planet's animal species and ecosystems is continuing to deteriorate.&nbsp;

According to the annual update of the Living Planet Index (LPI), between 1970 and 2020, the population size of monitored birds, mammals, amphibians, fish and reptiles have shrunk, on an average by 73 per cent on a global scale.&nbsp;

However, earlier in 2022's edition, it stated that the population has declined by 69 per cent.&nbsp;

"This flagship WWF report reveals the extent of the decline in biodiversity and confirms the trend of previous editions," Véronique Andrieux, director general of the NGO's French branch said, adding, "Behind each species, environments and ecosystems are affected."

Latin America and the Caribbean recorded the steepest average declines in recorded wildlife populations, with a 95% fall, according to the WWF and the Zoological Society of London’s (ZSL) biennial Living Planet report.

It was further followed by Africa with 76 per cent and Asia and the Pacific at 60 per cent. Meanwhile, North America recorded comparatively lower falls of 35 per cent and 39 per cent respectively since 1970.

“This does not mean that in reality there is no overall decrease in vertebrate populations [but the] current phase of the Anthropocene [epoch] is characterised by more complex changes than … simple disappearance," they added.&nbsp;

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos on Thursday (Oct 10) called on Southeast Asian and Chinese leaders to fast-track talks over a code of conduct for the embattled South China Sea. While speaking at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-China summit in Laos, Marcos accused Beijing of harassment and intimidation in the presence of Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The Philippine leader, in a veiled dig at China, added that all parties must "be earnestly open to seriously managing differences" and reducing tension.

Manila has consistently accused the Chinese coast guard of harassment in the South China Sea over the past months, calling out Beijing for repeated provocations and territorial incursions.

"There should be more urgency in the pace of the negotiations of the ASEAN-China code of conduct," Marcos told the meeting.

"It is regrettable that the overall situation in the South China Sea remains tense and unchanged. We continue to be subjected to harassment and intimidation," he stressed.

Marcos told Li Qiang that Beijing can’t separate economic cooperation from political relations between the two nations.

"You cannot separate economic cooperation from political security," the Philippine leader argued.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has called for the scrapping of the electoral college system of electing the US presidents. The Minnesota governor added that the system should be replaced with the popular vote principle.

Walz was in California Governor Gavin Newsom's home in Sacramento when he made the remark.&nbsp;

“I think all of us know, the electoral college needs to go.&nbsp;We need a national popular vote. We need to be able to go into York, Pennsylvania, and win," said Walz.&nbsp;

"We need to be in western Wisconsin and win. We need to be in Reno, Nevada, and win,” he added.&nbsp;

Walz's statement did not go down well with the rivals, as Donald Trump's campaign said Democrats wanted to change the US Constitution.&nbsp;

“Why does Tampon Tim [Trump’s derisive nickname for Walz] hate the Constitution so much?,” the Trump campaign posted on its official X account.

Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign national press secretary, added that Walz-Harris campaign wanted to take away the second Amendment right of the citizens.&nbsp;

"Dangerously liberal Tim Walz made it crystal clear: the Harris-Walz administration will get rid of the Electoral College, a critical component of our Constitution. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz want to destroy our country’s fundamental rights by ripping away our freedom of speech through censorship, taking away our 2nd Amendment right, dismantling the Supreme Court by through court-packing, and now through removing the Electoral College," said Leavitt.&nbsp;
