Israel's Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, on Thursday (Oct 17) confirmed that Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar was killed in an Israeli operation in Gaza. Katz issued the confirmation in a message to dozens of foreign ministers around the world.&nbsp;

Sinwar was killed alongside two other Hamas militants by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducting an operation in one of the buildings in Gaza.

“The mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, who is responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7, was killed today by IDF soldiers,” said Katz in the message, according to his office.

“This is a great military and moral achievement for Israel and a victory for the entire free world against the evil axis of radical Islam led by Iran,” he added.&nbsp;

Katz added that the killing “creates a possibility” for getting the hostages out immediately and for creating a Gaza free of Hamas and Iranian control.

“Israel needs your support and assistance now more than ever to advance these important goals together,” the minister added.

The IDF followed suit and posted a three-word message to confirm Sinwar's death.&nbsp;

A force from the 828th Bislamach Brigade killed three terrorists, and one of them was identified today as Sinwar.

National Unity chief and former war cabinet minister Benny Gantz said Sinwar's death was an "important achievement" but it did not signal the end of the war. He added that the IDF “will continue to operate in the Gaza Strip for years to come”.&nbsp;

“On this day, we must also remember the painful price of the war — all the murdered and the fallen who have been working for over a year on all fronts to ensure this never happens again," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Who is Sinwar?</h2>

Born in Khan Younis in 1962, Sinwar was seen as one of the&nbsp;uncompromising top officials of the Palestinian militant group, Hamas. In the early 1980s, Sinwar was repeatedly arrested by Israel because of his involvement in anti-occupation activism held at the Islamic University in Gaza.

Alongside now-killed Mohammed Deif, the head of Qassam Brigades, Sinwar planned the October 7 attacks and took over the militant outfit after Ismail Haniyeh was allegedly assassinated by Tel Aviv.

New&nbsp;sanctions&nbsp;target a Chinese company, Xiamen Limbach Aircraft Engine Co Ltd, that makes the engine powering Russia's Garpiya series long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, the US&nbsp;Treasury Department said.

The measures also hit China-based Redlepus&nbsp;Vector Industry Shenzhen Co Ltd for its role in the drones' shipment and an affiliated Russian person and company.

The drones are believed to have been&nbsp;used against military and civilian targets in Ukraine, damaging critical infrastructure and inflicting both civilian and military casualties. Reuters was first to report last month that the new Russian drones were being made&nbsp;using Chinese engines and parts.

Notably, there was no hostage present in the area where the militants were killed. According to a Channel 12 report, the IDF troops had opened fire on a group of terrorists on the ground floor of the building. When they entered the building afterwards, they realised that one of the dead terrorists had an uncanny resemblance to Sinwar – leading to the probe.

Israeli media reports claim that IDF troops did not know that Sinwar was in the building where they had launched the attack.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant also posted a cryptic message on social media.&nbsp;

Swiss-Indian industrialist Pankaj Oswal has filed an urgent appeal with the United Nations seeking intervention for alleged illegal detention of his 26-year-old daughter in Uganda.

Oswal has claimed his daughter is denied basic rights and has been detained without trial in the East African country since October 1.

According to reports, Vasundhara Oswal was taken from Oswal's Extra-Neutral Alcohol (ENA) plant in Uganda by around 20 armed men, who did not show any identification or warrant. She was detained in a missing man’s case.&nbsp;

Oswal has reportedly&nbsp;filed an appeal with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) on October 11. WGAD is an international human rights body appointed by the Human Rights Council to investigate and intervene in cases of misuse of police powers.

An Instagram post shared on Vasundhara’s handle described her “unlawful detainment and arrest.” The post showed an image of a toilet with blood and faeces on the floor. She was denied basic necessities including clean water and food and was not allowed to bathe or even change her clothes for nearly five days. She was forced to sit in a room full of shoes and given a small bench to sleep on.

According to the EU Reporter, Vasundhara was also denied vegetarian food and was not allowed to make contact with her family for days. Additionally, she was moved between multiple prisons to make it difficult for her family and lawyers to meet with her.

Several co-workers of Vasundhara have also been detained, including the company’s legal representative, Rita Ngabire.

Vasundhara’s brother described her as a “workaholic” who expanded the ENA plant in Uganda's Luwero from “a small tent on a bare land in 2021” to a $110 million factory. He claimed her detention was due to corporate jealousy of a 68-year-old man and accused him&nbsp;of extortion and ruining her reputation.

Despite a court order, Vasundhara was not released by the authorities, her brother said. According to reports, was taken to a lookalike court and charged with murder.

“This is every mother’s nightmare. My young daughter has been thrown into a foreign jail. She has been stripped of her basic human rights and her dignity. Vasundhara is an innocent bystander. All I want is her safety, and for her to be back in my arms,” Vasundhara’s mother said in an appeal to the Ugandan government.

As the diplomatic ties between India and Canada deteriorate owing to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's dangerous vote bank politics, New Delhi appears to be having second thoughts about buying&nbsp;Ontario-produced Stryker armoured vehicles, according to a report in the Economic Times.&nbsp;

"Plummeting diplomatic relations with Canada have raised doubts about Indian Army's plan to buy Ontario-produced Stryker armoured vehicles," the report stated.

The Stryker armoured vehicles deal was agreed upon during the 2+2 meeting held in 2023. It is an eight-wheel-drive combat vehicle developed by General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada for the United States.&nbsp;It is armed with a 30 mm cannon and a 105 mm mobile gun.&nbsp;

The Stryker was deployed in Afghanistan to counter the&nbsp;Taliban and has been exported to Ukraine as well where it is being used to push the Russians back.&nbsp;

As per reports, talks had&nbsp;been ongoing with the US for limited off-the-shelf purchase of Strykers and coproduction of the military equipment. For the past year, the Canadian-US lobby has been actively pushing for the deal to go through which seemingly goes against the current regime's 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-sufficient India) initiative.&nbsp;

In June, senior US officials said there were plans to demonstrate the "capabilities of the Stryker to the Indian Army at an early opportunity". However, since then, the Indo-Canadian relations have hit a new low and New Delhi appears to be in no hurry to get back to the table and see the deal through.&nbsp;
