Expressing concerns over the escalating situation in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said that India has been in regular touch with both Israel and Iran to "advocate constraints" and "enhance communication" in an attempt to resolve the conflict between the two countries.

In his opening remark at the MED Mediterranean Dialogues Conference in Rome, Italy, the Foreign Minister reiterated India's strong condemnation of terrorism, and the abduction of hostages by Hamas, and affirmed support for reaching a ceasefire.

Jaishankar, however, also emphasised the need to abide by international humanitarian law and called large-scale civilian casualties "unacceptable."

"Today I focus my remarks on the conflicts. The situation in the Middle East is obviously deeply concerning, both for what has happened and what may still come. India unequivocally condemns terrorism and hostage-taking. It also regards large-scale civilian casualties in military operations to be unacceptable. It is also a more technology-centered future with a premium on the mobility of talent and greener growth. Opportunities in this world are as indivisible as anxieties. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday (Nov. 25) said that the police arrested three Uzbekistan nationals for killing an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi in the Gulf country.&nbsp;

The police arrested the suspects on Sunday after the body of 28-year-old UAE-based rabbi Tzvi Kogan, was found by security services.&nbsp;

Kogan, who ran a kosher grocery store in Dubai, went missing on Thursday.&nbsp;

“The authorities revealed the identities of the three perpetrators, all of whom are Uzbek nationals,” an interior ministry statement carried by the official WAM news agency stated.&nbsp;

French prosectors said on Monday they were seeking the maximum 20-year jail term for the man charged with enlisting dozens of strangers to rape his heavily-sedated wife, in a trial that has shaken France.

Dominique Pelicot has since September been in the dock in the southern city of Avignon with 49 other men for organising the rapes and sexual abuse of his now ex-wife Gisele Pelicot. One man is being tried in absentia.

The case has shocked a France still working through its version of the #MeToo movement, with a prosecutor telling the court that the trial needed to herald a fundamental change in relations between men and women.

"Twenty years is a lot because it is 20 years of a life... But it is both a lot and too little. Too little in view of the seriousness of the acts that were committed and repeated," prosecutor Laure Chabaud said, outlining the case against Dominique Pelicot.

Dominique Pelicot has himself said he wants to go to prison for plying Gisele Pelicot with anti-anxiety drugs regularly from July 2011 to October 2020, leaving her exposed to abuse by strangers recruited online.

Dominique Pelicot documented the crimes extensively in photos and videos later discovered by police after he was caught filming up women's skirts in public.

Beyond Dominique Pelicot, who has admitted to all of the charges, prosecutors must also decide on appropriate potential punishments for the other defendants: men aged 26 to 74 and from all walks of life.

"This trial is shaking up our society in our relationship with each other, in the most intimate relationships between human beings," Jean-Francois Mayet, the other prosecutor, told the court.&nbsp;

The trial is making French society work "to understand our needs, our emotions, our desires and above all to take into account those of others," he said.

What is at stake, he added, "is not a conviction or an acquittal" but "to fundamentally change the relations between men and women".

Many accused argued in court that they believed Dominique Pelicot's claim they were participating in a libertine fantasy, in which his then-wife had consented to sexual contact and was only pretending to be asleep.

Among them, 33 have also claimed they were not in their right minds when they abused or raped Gisele Pelicot -- a defence not backed up by any of the psychological reports compiled by court-appointed experts.

Sentencing requests are slated to take three full days in the court's agenda, with prosecutors themselves estimating an average of 15 minutes per defendant.

Most, including Dominique Pelicot, are charged with aggravated rape.

"The facts, and the personality of each accused, were taken into account even in our sentencing demands", Mayet added.

As 11 weeks of hearings drew to a close last week, Gisele Pelicot's lawyer Antoine Camus called for "truth and justice" to be rendered to the plaintiff as well as her three children, David, Caroline and Florian, her step-children Celine and Aurore, and her grandchildren.

The court's five judges will not issue their ruling on the sentences until late December.

Prosecutors may also ask the maximum penalty for fellow defendant Jean-Pierre M., now aged 63, who applied Dominique Pelicot's practices against his own wife to rape her a dozen times, sometimes in the presence of Pelicot himself.

Of the remaining accused, 35 completely deny taking part in a rape.

Observers will be watching whether prosecutors ask for heavier penalties for those who came to rape Gisele Pelicot multiple times -- some of them as many as six -- than for those who answered Dominique Pelicot's invitation once.

The trial has made Gisele Pelicot, who has attended hearings and insisted they be held in public, as a feminist icon in the fight of women against sexual abuse.

Mayer praised the "courage" and "dignity" of Gisele Pelicot, the victim of some 200 repeated rapes, half of which were attributed to her ex-husband.

Mayet thanked her for allowing hearings to be open to the public and allowing some of the 20,000 or so photos and videos taken without her knowledge by Dominique Pelicot to be shown.&nbsp;

"You were right, madam: the past few weeks have shown the importance of showing this, so that shame changes sides," he added.

In another case of fatality in cosmetic surgery, a Chinese woman died 10 days after she underwent multiple laser treatments to remove her birthmarks and spots.

The 27-year-old woman, whose surname is Liu, lived in Tianjin, which is a northern city in China.&nbsp;

According to the woman's husband, she had various spots on her body and a lot of them were large in size and dark in colour.&nbsp;

The doctors had diagnosed Liu with neurofibromatosis and cafe-au-lait spots which made it important for her to go through multiple freckle removal procedures.&nbsp;

The woman went through nine laser treatments at Jinmen Dermatology Hospital in Tianjin and spent more than 100,000 yuan (US$14,000) for the same.&nbsp;

However, the doctors informed the woman that her symptoms had started worsening after the procedures. &nbsp;

It was revealed by the woman's mother that Liu had stopped the treatment once because of severe pain which was caused by the anaesthetic's uneven application, as per the South China Morning Post.&nbsp;

While going through her 10th procedure on October 21, Liu faced dizziness after doctors applied anaesthetic cream.&nbsp;

Even though the cream was quickly removed by the doctors, the woman went into shock, faced convulsions and experienced cardiac arrest.

The doctors called emergency services and Liu was shifted to another hospital where she succumbed to her medical condition after 10 days.

It was reported by the emergency donors that Liu died after she suffered complications because of excessive intracranial pressure.&nbsp;

However, the husband of Liu suspected that the allergic reaction was triggered by an excessive amount of anaesthetic which led to her death.

The procedures were defended by the staff at Jinmen Dermatology Hospital who stated that the anaesthetic cream was applied following the standard protocols and the allergy tests were made available after request.

Hospital director Zhang expressed regret for the death of Liu and said, “We will take full responsibility if found at fault.”
