Israeli military on Saturday (Feb 28) said that it had identified barrages of missiles launched towards Israel. According to media reports, several blasts were heard over Jerusalem following air raid sirens in the city. This comes after Israeli defence ministry announced “preemptive strikes” on Tehran. Explosions and smoke were seen in Tehran as Tel Aviv declared a national emergency. Shortly after, US President Donald Trump announced “major combat operations” in Iran, confirming the involvement of American forces.
“An additional barrage of missiles was launched towards the State of Israel,” the military said. “The public is requested to continue to follow the instructions of the Home Front Command. The public is requested to stay in protected spaces until official notice.”
Following the initial strikes on Israel, explosions were heard across US military bases in the region, including Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
In a statement, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said that a wave of missiles and drone attacks had been launched at Israel.
“The first wave of widespread missile and drone attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the occupied territories has begun,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said.
Meanwhile, the Israeli air force said that it was striking several Iranian military strikes.

Israeli media reported that about 30 targets across Iran have been struck so far, including the Iranian President’s residence and an intelligence headquarters.
The whereabouts of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Iranian Supreme Leader, are unknown after Israel, allegedly in a joint move with the United States, carried out a targeted preemptive strike near his headquarters in Tehran. It remains uncertain whether Khamenei was at his headquarters during the strike or if he sustained injuries from it. Citing an Iranian official, Reuters reported that the supreme leader was moved to a secure location.
Several international airlines, including Air France, SWISS, and Lufthansa, said that they were cancelling flights in the region amid the military operations in the region.
Meanwhile, Iran has suspended its internet services amid the military escalation in the region, according to monitor Netblocks.
“Network data show Iran is now in the midst of a near-total internet blackout,” Netblocks said on social media, adding the move “matches measures used during last year's war with Israel.”
