YouTube has said that it is blocking Russian state-funded media channels globally "effective immediately” while citing a policy barring content that denies, minimises or trivialises well-documented violent events.

Announcing the move on Twitter, YouTube on Friday said that while the change was effective immediately, “we expect our systems to take time to ramp up”.

"Our Community Guidelines prohibit content denying, minimizing or trivializing well-documented violent events, and we remove content about Russia's invasion in Ukraine that violates this policy. In line with that, effective immediately, we are also blocking YouTube channels associated with Russian state-funded media, globally," YouTube said in a statement.

YouTube added that when people search for topics on Russia and Ukraine, "our systems prominently surface authoritative news content in both our Top News and Breaking News shelves, and will continue to as needed."

The US-based video platform had previously blocked the channels, especially Russia Today and Sputnik, across Europe. It had also blocked YouTube ads and paused ad sales in Russia.

Russian state media have called restrictions placed on them by distributors, which include app stores and other social media services, unjustified censorship.

While the viewers might think that the digital creators have it easy with their fame and money pouring in by no measure, there’s a dark side to all this fame too. They tire out earlier than the rest of us.

Ever since YouTube’s biggest star PewDiePie, aka 30-year-old Swedish guy named Felix Kjellberg has announced that he will take a break in the coming year, users have started discussing the perils of quick fame that come with viral content creation and the burden that these stars face with.

In a video post, PewDiePie said, "Early next year I'll be away for a little while. I'll explain that later.”

He further added, "I'm taking a break from YouTube next year. I wanted to say it in advance because I made up my mind. I'm tired. I'm feeling very tired. I don't know if you can tell."

He was in the news last when his number 1 YouTube channel title went to Indian Bollywood record label T-Series.

PewDiePie's announcement is not one-of-a-kind as previously another megastar, ‘Superwoman’ Lilly Singh, also took a break in 2018. The artist revealed that she was taking a break as she said, "I am mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually exhausted."

Many other stars including Alex Wassabi also recently opened up on suffering from depression even though he has more money than he can spend.

Every time any star burns out and reaches out to their fans saying they are tired and want to take a break, it just brings to the fore the debate around how quick fame and money take a toll on the original content creator.

While YouTube has been a platform where people of all ages make their own style of unique content and turn it into a lucrative business, success brings with it too many burdens. It starts with limitless demand to create content and fear of losing followers. They get stuck in the number game. From the fear of not being able to live up to the expectations of their fans to losing advertisements that funnel their channel -- it’s this constant fear that ultimately leads to them getting burnt out.

After YouTube star PewDiePie announces break saying 'I'm tired', world opens to dark side of fame

YouTube on Tuesday clarified rules against posting videos of dangerous pranks, as risky “challenges” prompt people to video themselves doing things like biting into laundry soap or driving blindfolded.

The company already forbids content inciting dangerous activities likely to result in serious harm.

But the clarifications “make it clear that challenges like the Tide pod challenge or the Fire challenge, that can cause death and/or have caused death in some instances, have no place on YouTube,” the company said in a blog post.

“We’ve made it clear that our policies prohibiting harmful and dangerous content also extend to pranks with a perceived danger of serious physical injury,” said YouTube, which like other social networks is trying to show that it is better tackling problematic content.

It made clear the updated policies ban pranks that trick people into thinking they are in danger, such as fake home invasions or drive-by shootings.

“YouTube is home to many beloved viral challenges and pranks, like Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Terrible Christmas Presents’ prank or the water bottle flip challenge,” said YouTube, owned by Google’s parent Alphabet.

“That said, we’ve always had policies to make sure what’s funny doesn’t cross the line into also being harmful or dangerous.”

While playful or goofy challenges or pranks have become raging trends online, with video shared at YouTube or Facebook, some “memes” have put people in jeopardy.

A “Fire Challenge” dared people to put flammable liquid on their bodies then ignite it, while a “Tide Pod Challenge” involved people, typically teens, biting or chewing the encapsulated candy-coloured laundry detergent.

A “Bird Box” thriller released on Netflix a month ago inspired a challenge for people to do things blindfolded, mimicking characters in the original streaming film.

A US teenager over the weekend crashed while driving with her eyes covered, taking part in a challenge inspired by the hit Netflix show, according to media reports.

YouTube policy also bans pranks that cause children trauma, for example, the fake death of a parent or severe abandonment, according to the firm. Accounts that post videos violating policies on pranks will get a “strike” that will limit some features such as live streaming.

A second strike within three months will result in even more limited use of YouTube, while accounts getting three strikes in that time period will be terminated.

YouTube to ban dangerous prank videos after 'Bird Box' challenge goes viral

US wireless carriers Verizon Communications and AT&T said they have suspended digital advertising on Google's YouTube and other advertising platforms not related to search over concerns that their ads may have run next to extremist videos.

Verizon and AT&T joined a list of well-known British brands such as retailer Marks and Spencer Group deserting Alphabet's Google. Google is under fire in Europe from politicians and brands angered by ads appearing alongside videos on its YouTube platform carrying homophobic or anti-Semitic messages.

Google on Tuesday vowed an overhaul of its practices. The company must act swiftly to ensure that more advertisers do not pile on, analysts say.

As advertisers revolt, the search giant faces both a short-term loss of revenue and a long-term danger that companies will lose faith in the automated placement of ads upon which Google has built its empire, said analyst Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research.

"The bigger risk is this seems to be a backlash against programmatic advertising in general," Dawson said. "There's this worry that you no longer have control over where ads appear."

AT&T is removing ads from the non-search inventory on Google because its "ads may have appeared alongside YouTube content promoting terrorism and hate," the company wrote in an email.

Verizon said it had suspended all digital advertising not related to search after saying earlier on Wednesday that it had only suspended advertising on Google's non-search platforms. It took the action after its ads were appearing on "non-sanctioned websites," a spokeswoman wrote in an email.

"We are working with all of our digital advertising partners to understand the weak links so we can prevent this from happening in the future," the spokeswoman said.

Google declined to comment on individual customers but said it has begun a review of its advertising policies. The news that AT&T and Verizon were suspending Google ads was first reported by Britain's Times newspaper.

Other big brands, such as Mondelez International Inc , were keeping an eye on the situation. While Mondelez has not seen evidence that its ads have appeared alongside inappropriate content, it is in “constant discussion with both Google and YouTube and will be monitoring the issue closely,” a spokeswoman said.

YouTube has been a key driver of growth for Google as its traditional business of search advertising matures. Google’s net ad revenue worldwide from YouTube was $5.58 billion last year, according to New York-based research firm eMarketer. It is expected to hit $7 billion in 2017, according to a forecast by eMarketer made before the recent controversy.

One question many people are asking is whether advertisers will reallocate the marketing dollars they have devoted to YouTube to other platforms, said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research. Wieser, however, thinks that if the boycott is widespread enough, no one else will benefit.

“If you know all of your competitors are reducing their spending too, then you don’t need to spend more,” he said.
Google must walk a fine line between giving advertisers more control and alienating the massive community of content creators who have made the site a top destination for coveted young viewers.

One likely path forward for Google is to tighten controls on which videos are eligible for advertising, perhaps by the channel's track record or number of viewers, said Dawson. But any such restrictions risk hurting artists with small followings.

"Google is caught between a rock and a hard place here between its creators and its advertisers," Dawson said.
