Notably, Gallant made the rather rebellious remark in front of lawmakers during a private security briefing on Monday (Aug 12).&nbsp;

“I hear all the heroes with the war drums, ‘absolute victory,’ and all that gibberish. I saw that courage when it came down to the discussion,” said Gallant, according to reports.&nbsp;

“I am not prepared for you to call the prime minister’s words ‘gibberish’,” Likud MK Tally Gotliv, a firebrand populist, reportedly said in response.

“I am prepared to debate with facts and action. I might be weak with media and politics, but on security, I know what I am talking about,” Gallant responded.&nbsp;

After the meeting, Gotliv urged Netanyahu to sack Gallant. She was also stopped by the chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Yuli Edelstein to ask questions to Gallant.&nbsp;

Israel exploring governing alternatives to Hamas in Gaza, Netanyahu aide says Biden’s plan accepted

The International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Karim Khan,&nbsp;on Monday (May 20) sought arrest warrants for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the October 7 attacks on Israel and the ongoing war in Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>What are the accusations against them?</h2>

The ICC prosecutor’s office said it suspected all five – Israeli PM, defence minister and Hamas leaders – bore criminal responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Israel or the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;

In a statement, Khan’s office said Hamas leader Sinwar, leader of the Al Qassem Brigades (Hamas’ armed wing) Deif, and Hamas political leader Haniyeh have been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on Israel and Gaza Strip from “at least” October 7.

The Hamas leaders have been accused of extermination as a crime against humanity, murder, and taking hostages as a war crime, according to the statement by Khan’s office.&nbsp;

Additionally, in the context of captivity, the Hamas leaders have also been accused of rape and other acts of sexual violence, torture, other inhumane acts as a crime against humanity, cruel treatment, and outrage upon personal dignity as a war crime.&nbsp;

“The world was shocked on the 7th of October when people were ripped from their bedrooms, from their homes, from the different kibbutzim in Israel,” Khan told CNN in an interview, adding that “people have suffered enormously.”

According to the statement by Khan’s office, Netanyahu and Gallant have been accused of using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare; wilfully causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or health; wilful killing or murder; intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population; extermination and/or murder; and persecution and other inhumane acts as crimes against humanity.&nbsp;

Last month, Netanyahu had said any ICC arrest warrants against senior Israeli government and military officials “would be an outrage of historic proportions.”

When asked about the Israeli PM’s comments, the ICC chief prosecutor told CNN, “Nobody is above the law.”

He added that if Israel disagrees with the ICC, “they are free, notwithstanding their objections to jurisdiction, to raise a challenge before the judges of the court and that’s what I advise them to do.”&nbsp;

<h2>What next?</h2>

A panel of ICC judges will now consider Khan’s application for the arrest warrants. It will now be up to the court’s pre-trial judges to determine if there is sufficient evidence to issue warrants.

Notably, the ICC prosecutor in 2021 opened a probe into possible war crimes committed by Israel as well as Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups in the Palestinian territories.&nbsp;

Legal experts have told AFP that Hamas and Israel could face war crimes charges over the conflict.&nbsp;

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz called the ICC chief prosecutor’s decision “a historic disgrace that will be remembered forever.”&nbsp;

Katz also vowed to form a special committee to fight back against any such action and also work with world leaders to ensure no such warrants are enforced on Israeli leaders. &nbsp;

Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri, as per Reuters said that the decision “equates the victim with the executioner” and encourages Israel to continue its “war of extermination” in Gaza.

International Criminal Court prosecutor seeks arrest warrants for Netanyahu, 3 Hamas leaders

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, in a confrontation on Wednesday (May 15), rejected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's strategy for the Gaza Strip following the war with Hamas, which has been going on since October 7 when the militant group led an assault on the Jewish nation.&nbsp;

Gallant's televised statement highlighted a deepening rift within the Israeli leadership. "We must dismantle Hamas’ governing capabilities in Gaza. The key to this goal is military action, and the establishment of a governing alternative in Gaza," Gallant said, adding,&nbsp;"In the absence of such an alternative, only two negative options remain: Hamas' rule in Gaza or Israeli military rule in Gaza."

As per Gallant, he has been making efforts to promote his plan within the Israeli cabinet since October of a&nbsp;"non-hostile Palestinian governing alternative". However, there has been no response, he added.&nbsp;

Gallant has shown&nbsp;his opposition to any long-term military rule by Israel in the besieged territory.

While Netanyahu in a veiled statement and without mentioning defence minister directly, hinted at Gallant's remarks as being mere "excuses."

“We need determination, endurance, strength, and national cohesion with the goals. It is a battle in which the one who survives is the one who is stronger at the national level, in its values, and in its unity. This is a battle of national determination, and I tell you that we will defeat Hamas,” Gallant added.

The warning comes at a time when Yemen-based and Iran-backed Houthis have been stepping up their attack on US naval assets that are stationed in the Red Sea in the aftermath of the Israel-Gaza war.

"There has been a quantitative improvement in the number of operations, the size and the number of targets, as well as an increase in the type of weapons," he said in a televised address.

Further elucidating on one of the weapons, Nasrallah said that this was the very first time the group deployed weaponised drones in the offensive.

"For the first time in the history of the resistance in Lebanon, we have used attack drones," he said.

And last Friday, an Italian tourist was killed and seven others injured in a car-ramming attack in Tel Aviv.&nbsp;

This latest surge in unrest comes after Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a "pause" for dialogue on judicial reform legislation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (April 10) reinstated Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. Addressing a press conference, Netanyahu said the two resolved their disagreement over Gallant's public call last month for a halt to the government's bitterly divisive judicial overhaul plan which he said became a threat to Israel's security.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (April 10) reinstated Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. Addressing a press conference, Netanyahu said the two resolved their disagreement over Gallant's public call last month for a halt to the government's bitterly divisive judicial overhaul plan which he said became a threat to Israel's security. "I've decided to put our differences behind us," Netanyahu said, adding he and Gallant worked closely together throughout the last two weeks. "Gallant remains in his post and we will continue to work together for the safety of the citizens of Israel," he told reporters. However, a report by the news agency Reuters on April 3 said Netanyahu delayed the dismissal of his defence minister. On Monday, Netanyahu said he would restore calm and security to Israel following rising tensions over the last week. The country has witnessed heavy clashes, shootings, rocket strikes and a car-ramming attack since last week. A day after the Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, over 30 rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel, an attack which the Israeli army said was most likely carried out by Hamas. Israel then responded by striking the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon, targeting terror infrastructures that it said belonged to Hamas. And last Friday, an Italian tourist was killed and seven others injured in a car-ramming attack in Tel Aviv. This latest surge in unrest comes after Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a "pause" for dialogue on judicial reform legislation. Citing sources, the news agency AFP reported on Monday that the Israel-Palestine conflict this year claimed the lives of at least 94 Palestinians, 19 Israelis, one Ukrainian, and one Italian. The demonstrations which initially used to be peaceful now often end up in confrontation with the security forces.
