Both sets of heroes hail from Marvel comic books, but corporate business decisions over the past several decades kept them apart when it came to movies -- the X-Men were with Fox, Spider-Man was with Sony. The Avengers and other characters eventually found a home under Marvel Studios, which Disney bought in 2009.
