Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday (Sep 27) revealed why there has been no proof of life of the Iranian Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not been released since he took power in March. Mojtaba Khamenei’s whereabouts have remained unknown since the war began on February 28, when the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Tehran. In the strikes, former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba’s father, was killed. Following his death, Mojtaba Khamenei was named Iran’s Supreme Leader in March. However, he has remained out of the public eye, with no pictures or videos of him released. Mojtaba has only shared written statements on occasion, which are often read on Iranian state media.
Why is there no proof of life of Mojtaba?
Speaking in an interview with NBC News, Araghchi revealed why there has been no proof of life of the Iranian leader since he came into power. The Iranian minister attributed his absence to “security concerns.” He also said that there are indications that Mojtaba is under threat by Americans.Responding to NBC anchor, Araghchi said, “Well, there are security concerns, and you’re well aware of that. You know, our Supreme Leader was illegally assassinated during the last war. And I think it is very logical that we protect our leader. There are lots of indications that he is under threat by Americans.”Dismissing earlier reports claiming that Mojtaba Khamenai is not completely in power and decision-making in Iran during the war, Araghchi said that he is in “full control”.“There are other indications that he is in full control, he is in full order. We receive his, you know, comments, and orders, and opinions. And there is a national consensus on decision-making. It is false if somebody thinks that there are different sources of power inside Iran,” Araghchi said.“We move based on national consensus. We in the Foreign Ministry are in close coordination with the government, with IRGC, with the Supreme National Security Council, with the Parliament. We are all in one front, facing all challenges imposed on us by the US,” he added.
Mojtaba survived two US-Israeli strikes
According to a New York Post report, the Iranian supreme leader survived a second US-Israeli strike while being treated in a hospital after being injured in the initial attack. The report, citing an Iranian cleric, said that the 56-year-old was taken to a hospital after the US and Israel attacked a compound in Tehran to eliminate his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on February 28. However, the US and Israel targeted three medical compounds, including one in which Mojtaba was being treated “at some time in the days that followed”.“Even after he had been wounded and taken to the hospital, three hospitals in Tehran were bombed,” Mohsen Heydari, a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, told the New York Post. “Mojtaba Khamenei was in the third hospital and was pulled from the rubble.”

‘He was in that very building’: Iran official REVEALS how Mojtaba survived strike that killed Ali Khamenei

Amid widespread rumours about the well-being of Iran's new Supreme Leader, Russia has now revealed his whereabouts and backed the Iranian government's position on his condition. Even as the US, including President Trump has continuously claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei is no where to be seen and he is severely injured, Iran said that he is fine. The new Supreme Leader has also issued couple of statements since taking over his father's role, but has not made any public appearances. He has not even issued any video messages, in contrast to his father late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, on Tuesday (Mar 31) Russia’s ambassador to Iran said that Mojtaba Khamenei is in Iran, quashing previous reports of him being treated in Russia. “As the Iranian leadership has stated repeatedly, the new leader is in Iran, but for obvious reasons, he is refraining from appearing in public,” Alexey Dedov told the global Russian-language outlet RTVI. Though he did not elaborate further, his statement hints at a strategic decision by the Iranian government to keep the new Supreme Leader's whereabouts under wraps until the security threat is mitigated. Also Read: Khamenei's advisor says ‘war will continue’ despite Trump's '5-day halt' announcement — How Iran has reacted so far
What we know about Mojtaba's previous statements
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei's latest statement came on Mar 29, when he thanked the Iraqi people and religious leadership for their support of Iran “in the face of aggression." Khamenei thanked the Iraqi clergy and people for their “clear position on aggression against Iran.” On Mar 16, he issued a statement amid rumours if Russia escape and said that all those previously appointed to government positions by his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will remain in their posts and should “continue to carry on with their work.” He also appointed the former chief of the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohsen Rezaei, as a military adviser. The statement increased scrutiny about the wellbeing of the Iranian leader as he did not appear on TV or video to deliver the message.

In his first statement after succeeding his father as country's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba said that Iran will not hesitate to take revenge for the crimes committed by the enemy and mentioned the Minab school massacre. He warned the Gulf countries to close the American bases. He also said Iran had only targeted US bases in neighbouring countries and urged them to determine their position regarding the "aggressors and the killers of our people." However this message was also a read out by a presenter on state TV. This was in stark contrast with the former Supreme Leader - who appeared in video at least three times in February alone amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran.
What Iran said?
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Mar 14 said that there was "no problem" with the Islamic Republic's new Supreme Leader, silencing all buzz around his whereabouts. "There is no problem with the new supreme leader. He sent his message yesterday, and he will perform his duties," Araghchi told MSNBC. On March 11, Yousef Pezeshkian, the son of President Masoud Pezeshkian, said that Mojtaba was “safe and sound.” Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others.
