Deepinder Goyal’s Temple wearable is moving closer to its India launch, with pre-orders potentially opening as early as next week. People who joined the early-access waitlist are expected to get priority. The unusual device is designed to sit on the side of the head and track changes in blood flow linked to the brain using a system called BrainFlow. Unlike a smartwatch or smart ring, Temple is a small, pill-shaped wearable that attaches to the skin around the temple. The company says it can remain attached during activities including running, showering and swimming, although it does not recommend using it while scuba diving.
How does the Temple wearable work?
Temple is attached using disposable Grips, essentially adhesive tapes designed to keep the device against the skin. The company says a Grip can last for up to seven days, broadly matching the wearable's claimed battery life. However, Temple recommends replacing the Grip every two to three days, particularly after exposure to sweat or dust. The device is also designed to fit underneath glasses. Its smooth edges are intended to prevent it from catching on clothing. The launch edition is expected to be available in six colours: True Gold, Rose Gold, Black Mirror, Real Jade, Deep Blue and Purple Funk.
What does Temple actually measure?
Temple uses a PPG (photoplethysmography) sensor, an optical sensing technology also found in smartwatches. The difference is where the sensor is positioned. Instead of measuring from the wrist, Temple places the sensor at the temple. The company says its BrainFlow system continuously tracks changes in cerebral blood-flow-related signals. Goyal says this data could provide insights related to sleep, recovery, exercise and the body's response to stress. However, there is an important distinction: Temple does not directly read brain activity and is not presented as a device that can diagnose health conditions. It uses optical sensing to track blood-flow-related signals rather than the electrical signals measured by an EEG.
What do the studies say?
Goyal has shared two studies supporting the technology. One involved 23 healthy adults and compared BrainFlow readings with Transcranial Doppler measurements during cycling and changes in posture. Another analysed 60 sessions involving 44 healthy men, comparing BrainFlow with time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy. The results shared by Goyal indicated stronger correlations with changes in brain blood volume than scalp blood volume. However, both studies are preprints and require further research and peer review.
Temple price and India launch
The final India price has not been confirmed. Goyal has previously indicated a price of around $1,000, or roughly Rs 1 lakh, while earlier reports suggested a figure closer to Rs 80,000. The expected price is said to include an unlimited supply of disposable Grips. For now, the key date is next week, when pre-orders could open for waitlist users. The exact shipping date remains unconfirmed.

Deepinder Goyal’s Temple wearable may open pre-orders next week: What it can actually track

Deepinder Goyal’s unusual Temple wearable is moving closer to its commercial launch. The Zomato and Eternal founder has revealed six colours for the launch edition and said pre-orders could begin as early as next week. The six finishes are True Gold, Rose Gold, Black Mirror, Real Jade, Deep Blue and Purple Funk. Goyal shared images of the variants on X, while cautioning that a few details still need to be finalised before pre-orders can begin. For people already on Temple’s early-access waitlist, there is another important detail: they will receive priority access when pre-orders open.

Temple gets six colours before launch
Until now, Temple had mostly been shown in a gold finish. The new images reveal a much wider launch palette. Goyal described the six options as the colours for the “launch edition”, leaving open the possibility that the range could change later. There is currently no confirmation that all six colours will remain available after the initial launch. The exact pre-order date has also not been announced. Goyal's wording “hopefully next week” means the timeline remains dependent on the remaining preparations.
What exactly is Deepinder Goyal’s Temple?
Temple is unlike a conventional smartwatch or smart ring. The small device is designed to sit on the side of the head, around the temple area between the forehead and ear. The company says the location allows Temple to collect signals associated with blood flow to the brain and other physiological responses. Its headline technology is called BrainFlow, which Goyal has described as a wearable system for continuously measuring cerebral blood flow. Recent validation work shared by Goyal compared BrainFlow readings with time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (TD-NIRS). However, these findings should not be treated as established medical proof. Some of the research remains under review, and Temple is still an experimental health wearable.
When will Temple launch and how much will it cost?
Goyal has previously said the limited launch edition should begin shipping before the end of 2026. He has also said the device has become considerably smaller than earlier prototypes. The final price has not been officially confirmed. Earlier reports and comments from Goyal have pointed towards a premium price, with figures around $1,000 (roughly Rs 1 lakh) previously discussed. However, buyers should wait for the official price before treating that figure as the final retail cost. For now, the immediate development is clear: six colours have been revealed, pre-orders could begin next week, and early-access users are expected to get first access.

The new Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch is said to deliver fast application load times, highly responsive user experiences, and efficient power consumption, but does it deliver what it promises? Watch the review to know more.

Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch: How’s the new wearable?

Swatch Group is developing a Swiss-made operating system as it seeks to offer a smaller, more flexible alternative to the dominant systems which connect items such as smartwatches to the internet, its chief executive said.

The world's biggest watchmaker has been sceptical about smartwatches, which use systems like Google's Android Wear, Samsung's Tizen OS and Apple's WatchOS to connect to the internet, and has so far launched watches with limited connected features under its Tissot and Swatch brands.

CCS Insight expects the market for smart wearables to almost double to 185 million units worth $16.9 billion by 2021.
Nick Hayek said the biggest problems facing competitors' smartwatches related to energy consumption and privacy.

Swatch Group, whose brands include Omega, said last month it was working with Swiss research institute CSEM to launch an "ecosystem" for connected objects by the end of 2018.

Swatch said this would offer absolute data protection and ultra-low energy consumption and would not need regular updates.

"I don't want to become the industry standard for smartwatches," Nick Hayek said, adding it would be dangerous if everybody depended on just one or two dominant operating systems.

"But in Switzerland we have a lot of expertise when it comes to creating something that is smaller, consumes much less energy, is independent and more cost-efficient and can go into little objects," he said.

Swatch had many requests from small US startups looking for flexible open-source systems and would serve these customers while also using the system in its own watches, he said.

Ben Wood, an analyst with CCS Insight, said there were dangers in Swatch trying to build its own system, adding that it would be hard to compete with Google, Samsung and Apple, which had more resources in this area.

"Swatch may be able to develop its own software platform, but attracting developers to get access to the most popular apps needs an operating system with scale. Just look at how BlackBerry ended up abandoning its own software," Wood said.

But if Swatch was able to offer people something unique it might be able to break into the market, Francisco Jeronimo at IDC said, adding that this was a "a gigantic task".

However, users had not yet locked in to a specific interface in what is a still new segment, therefore offering an opportunity for Swatch, Jeronimo said.
