Even so, Blancato cites CrowdStrike and Microsoft as two great long-term investment opportunities.

Tech sell-off deepens as cybersecurity outage hits Wall Street

Goldman Sachs reported great profit growth in the second quarter, helped by robust underwriting of debt and fixed-income trading.

Earnings at the Wall Street giant more than doubled from a year earlier but came in well below a record level from the first quarter.

Such results attest to how strongly the US economy is recovering. The job empowered chief executives to make purchases, sell debt, and offer shares.

Excluding one-off charges, CEO comments on performance

CEO David Solomon was happy with the results. He noted "We are pleased with our solid second-quarter results.

Our overall performance in the first half of the year reflects strong year-on-year growth in both Global Banking &amp; Markets and Asset &amp; Wealth Management.

The earnings came out at $3.04 billion, or $8.62 a share, for the quarter ended June 30. In sharp comparison, last year it had earnings of $1.22 billion, or $3.08 a share.

Investment banking and trading fees soar

Goldman Sachs registered a 21 per cent increase in its investment banking fees. The same was $1.73 billion for the quarter.

The fees arising from mergers and acquisitions advisory became 7 per cent more. Its debt and stock underwriting fees soared by 39 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.

The whole FICC trading increased by 17 per cent while the whole FICC financing boosted the FICC financing. Its equities trading revenue also became 7 per cent higher.

Improved profitability in the entire sector

Some of the other major investment banks that showed outstanding results for their investment banking business are JPMorgan Chase and Jefferies Financial.

Based on data compiled by Dealogic, investment banking revenues surged by 17 per cent globally. It increased to $41.6 billion between January and June.

Shift back to core businesses

After its foray into consumer banking didn't pay off, Goldman has hunkered down and focused on the things it historically does best.

Most of that is investment banking and trading, a strategy shift that investors seem to be getting behind.

The firm's stock surged 24.4 per cent this year through Thursday, outpacing Morgan Stanley's 11.6 per cent gain and JPMorgan Chase's 20.5 per cent rise. Goldman shares fell slightly in choppy premarket trading, however.

Growth in asset and wealth management

The asset and wealth management division services to high net worth and institutional clients. It has seen its revenue rise by 27 per cent in Q2.

Goldman oversees $2.93 trillion in its funds. The bank received, earlier in July, the mandate to manage UPS's $43.4 billion retirement client peg.

Platform Solutions hosts a handful of consumer units. It has increased revenues by a low 2 per cent.

Challenges in card sector

Goldman Sachs took a $58 million charge in the second quarter for its credit card business with General Motors.

The company is expected to leave the partnership, as their talks are ongoing for GM to replace Goldman with Barclays.

Negotiations are also said not to achieve a positive solution in the future for Goldman's credit card partnership with Apple.

The Fed's annual stress test pointed to potential problems and noted that Goldman's potential losses are among the worst in a hypothetical scenario.

Dividend increase

Amid the turmoils, Goldman Sachs declared a quarterly dividend hike to $3 a share. That is from $2.75 previously.

The bank's provisions for credit losses have more than halved. They turned out to be $282 million in the second quarter. That is from $615 million a year prior.

Wall Street banks on Friday punted on a healthier pipeline of deals and a notable rise in investment-banking activity while reporting quarterly earnings, even as they grapple with multiple headwinds and reasons for caution.

Volumes of mergers and acquisitions came in at $1.6 trillion globally in the first half of the year, a 20 per cent rise from a year ago, according to Dealogic data. Citigroup posted a 60 per cent increase in its investment banking revenue amounting to $853 million. At JPMorgan, investment banking fees rose 50 per cent, better than the company's earlier forecast of a rise of 25 per cent to 30 per cent. Wells Fargo investment banking revenue surged 38 per cent to $430 million.

Despite these gains, the stock market has reacted cautiously. Shares of Wells Fargo were down 6 per cent midday Friday after the bank missed analysts' estimates for interest income. Citi fell 1.5 per cent after investors complained about expenses and market share. JPMorgan was down 0.3 per cent, which analysts attributed to worries about costs and provisions.

It made its last leap of 10,000 points in about three and a half years, as the U.S. economy and corporate profits crawled out of the crash caused COVID-19. They’ve continued to hold up so far despite the worst inflation in decades, the punishing effects of high interest rates and worries about a recession that seemed inevitable but hasn’t arrived.

The S&amp;P 500 index, which is much more widely followed on Wall Street and dictates the performance of many more 401(k) accounts than the Dow, was 0.2% higher, as of 11:40 a.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite was up 0.2%. They also had rallied on Wednesday to all-time highs.

Walmart was one of the strongest forces lifting the market, and it rose 6% after reporting stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It also said its revenue for the year could top the forecasted range it had earlier given.

Walmart’s strength could be an encouraging signal for the broader economy. Worries have been rising about whether U.S. households can keep up with still-high inflation, even if it’s not as bad as before, and more expensive credit-card payments, particularly those making lower incomes.

Target, which reports its quarterly results next week, climbed following Walmart’s report, along with other retailers like Dollar General and Dollar Tree. Each added at least 2.4%.

Chubb climbed 3.8% after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway disclosed it had built an ownership stake in the insurer.

Stronger-than-expected profit reports have been one of the main reasons U.S. stock indexes jumped through May to records following a tough April. Another has been revived hopes that the Federal Reserve will be able to cut its main interest rate at least once or twice this year. The Fed has been keeping its federal funds rate at the highest level in more than two decades.

A string of worse-than-expected reports on inflation at the start of the year had put the potential for such cuts in jeopardy, but some more encouraging data has since arrived.

Treasury yields have eased in May as hopes rose that the economy could hit the hoped-for sweet spot, where it cools enough because of high interest rates to stifle inflation but not so much that it causes a bad recession. Yields were holding edging higher Thursday following some mixed data on the economy.

One report showed slightly more workers applied for unemployment benefits last week than economists expected, though the number remains low compared with history. Others said homebuilders broke ground on fewer projects last month than expected, manufacturing growth in the mid-Atlantic region was weaker than hoped and import prices rose more than forecast.

“Today’s numbers were in line with the overall theme of the week — nothing dramatic, but showing signs of a steady-to-cooling economy,” said Chris Larkin, managing director, trading and investing, at E-Trade from Morgan Stanley.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury ticked up to 4.36% from 4.35% late Wednesday. The two-year yield, which moves more closely with expectations for action by the Fed, rose to 4.77% from 4.72%.

On the losing end of Wall Street, Deere fell 3.2% despite reporting stronger profit for its latest quarter than expected. It cut its forecast for profit over the full fiscal year below analysts’ estimates, as farmers buy fewer tractors and other equipment.
