The political row over Vande Mataram has intensified as the BJP passes a resolution targeting the Congress over its position on the national song.

The BJP says it will launch a nationwide awareness campaign highlighting the history and significance of Vande Mataram, with a special focus on young people. The party has also invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s views as part of its campaign.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has defended the party’s existing practice regarding the national song and national anthem at Congress functions.

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday gave her assent to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, giving the national song Vande Mataram the same legal protection as the national anthem Jana Gana Mana.

The Bill was passed by Parliament last month and amends the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. With the President’s approval, the legislation has now become law.

The CPI(M) and the PMK have criticised the Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan over reports that the 33rd convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University would begin with Vande Mataram instead of the state anthem Tamil Thai Vazhthu. The parties argued that the move undermines state autonomy and violates constitutional principles, urging the Governor's office to respect Tamil Nadu's established protocol.
