US Elections 2024: US allies bracing for Donald Trump's return?

US&nbsp;President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Apr 23) vowed that he will personally hold opponent Donald Trump "accountable" for his role in restricting abortion rights.

<h2>Bragging and accountability</h2>

Addressing a crowd at a university in Tampa, Florida — a state where starting May 1 abortions after six weeks of pregnancy will be banned — Biden held Trump responsible for the demise of abortion rights.

"Let's be real clear. There's one person responsible for this nightmare. And he's acknowledged it, and he brags about it: Donald Trump," he said.

In 2022, America's conservative-dominated Supreme Court overturned decades-old legal precedent, revoking the nationwide right to abortion. Many Republican-led states quickly moved to impose restrictions or outright bans via a series of 'heartbeat bill(s)'.

Trump has been known to brag about his three Supreme Court judges being behind the contentious abortion decision.

The restrictions are "literally taking us back 160 years," said Biden, apparently referring to Arizona's strict new ban based on a law that dates back to 1864, reported AFP.

The United States is set to hold General Elections in just a few months. Abortion rights have emerged as a matter of paramount importance in the elections.

Meanwhile, Republicans have sought to capitalise on the pro-life movement. The party's presumptive presidential candidate Trump, however, recently sought to soften his stand and said that Arizona's near-complete ban on abortion goes too far.

Despite that, slamming the Republican, Biden said, "Trump is worried voters are going to hold him accountable for the cruelty and chaos he created. Folks, the bad news for Trump is, we are going to hold him accountable."

US President Joe Biden's re-election campaign has blamed Republican rival Donald Trump for Arizona's revival of the 160-year-old near-complete&nbsp;abortion ban.

In a statement on Tuesday (Apr 9), Biden's running mate Vice President Kamala Harris said: "Arizona just rolled back the clock to a time before women could vote–and, by his own admission, there’s one person responsible: Donald Trump."

<h2>'Proudly' responsible&nbsp;</h2>

On Tuesday, Arizona's Supreme Court revived a law dating back to 1864 that bans abortion in virtually all instances. This damning ban came just a day after Trump in a video proclaimed that he was "proudly the person responsible" for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that enshrined abortion rights in the US for nearly five decades.

Donald Trump has insinuated that President Joe Biden may have been under the influence of drugs during his State of the Union (SOTU) address last month. The former Republican presidential candidate made these comments during an interview with radio broadcaster Hugh Hewitt on Thursday (April 4). Referring to reports of cocaine being found in the White House in July last year, Trump claimed, without offering evidence, that Biden was "all jacked up" and "higher than a kite" during his March address.

When asked if he thinks that Joe Biden was using cocaine,&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;said, "I think what happened is, you know, that white stuff that they happened to find, which happened to be cocaine in the White House, I don't know, I think something's going on there".

When asked by the host if he is suggesting that the US President used cocaine, Trump responded,&nbsp;&nbsp;"I don't know what he's using, but that was not, hey, he was higher than a kite".

In a move experts have labelled "a grave step backwards", Facebook owner Meta has decided to decommission CrowdTangle, a vital digital tool for tracking viral falsehoods.

The move which is scheduled to take effect on August 14, as per experts, will disrupt efforts to detect political misinformation in a major election year.

<h2>What is CrowdTangle?</h2>

CrowdTangle, as per an AFP report, is a game-changing tool which for years has offered researchers and journalists crucial real-time transparency into the spread of conspiracy theories and hate speech on Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. &nbsp;

The monitoring tool, as per reports, will be replaced by another tool which researchers say&nbsp;lacks the same functionality and that news organisations will largely not have access to.

CrowdTangle will be replaced by a new Content Library, a technology still under development.

The tool, as per tech industry experts, including former CrowdTangle chief executive Brandon Silverman, is currently not an effective replacement, especially in a year when world-over elections are likely to see a proliferation of AI-enabled falsehoods.

While Meta claims that the Content Library will contain more comprehensive data than CrowdTangle and will be available to academics and non-profit election integrity experts, concerns remain about access for independent researchers and journalists.&nbsp;

However, Meta has announced that the new tool will not be accessible&nbsp;for-profit media. This has raised questions about transparency and accountability.

<h2>What the experts say</h2>

This move comes just three months before the 2024 US Presidential election that will see incumbent Joe Biden and Republican rival Donald Trump face off. Not only that, globally,&nbsp;dozens of countries&nbsp;will hold elections this year.

"In a year when almost half of the global population is expected to vote in elections, cutting off access to CrowdTangle will severely limit independent oversight of harms," warned Melanie Smith, director of research at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.&nbsp;

"It represents a grave step backwards for social media platform transparency," she said.

Historically, CrowdTangle has alerted researchers about harmful activities such as foreign interference, online harassment, and incitements to violence. It played an important role in quickly identifying "misinformation, voter interference and suppression," during the 2020 US elections.

Global non-profit Mozilla Foundation, along with dozens of technology watchdogs and researchers, has urged Meta to retain CrowdTangle until at least January 2025, citing concerns about the new tool's limitations.&nbsp;

"Abandoning CrowdTangle while the Content Library lacks so much of CrowdTangle's core functionality undermines the fundamental principle of transparency," said the letter.

However, defending the decision, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said that the Content Library will offer "more comprehensive data than CrowdTangle" and will be accessible to academics and non-profit election integrity experts.&nbsp;

On numerous occasions, Musk has criticised Biden's handling of the Southern border crisis and accused the Democrats of being "influenced by the unions".

He previously disclosed that he voted for Biden in the 2020 election but turned critical of him after Tesla was excluded from the president's 2021 electric vehicle summit.

During The New York Times Dealbook Summit in November, Musk made it clear that he wouldn't be voting for Biden, stressing that this didn't imply he would support Trump either.

Both Musk and Trump confirmed their recent meeting at a mutual friend's place, amid reports that the former US president was seeking new donors for his campaign. In an interview with former CNN host Don Lemon, Musk clarified that Trump didn't ask for financial assistance and that he wouldn't cover his legal fees under any circumstances.

"I want to make a considered decision before the election, and if I do decide to endorse a candidate then I would explain exactly why," he said.

Sources indicated that the discussions between the two were more extensive than previously understood. Trump reportedly expressed to his close associates that the owner of X should acquire Truth Social, despite the breakdown in negotiations.

Elon Musk says US needs a ‘red wave’ to save it. What does it mean?

The White House has announced a new national office — Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center — dedicated to aiding states in implementing "red flag" laws. These gun violence prevention rules permit a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who they believe may present a danger to others or themselves.&nbsp;

"The survivors of the shooting advocated for the passage of a red flag law in Florida, and the tragedy helped to inspire the passage of red flag laws in other states. These laws have been shown to prevent mass shootings and suicides, but the tools made available under these laws are only effective if people are aware of them and can properly invoke them," it added.
