The Labor Department`s closely watched monthly employment report on Friday could bolster economists' dire predictions that it would take several years to recover from the economic meltdown.

"The good news is that we probably have hit the bottom," said Sung Won Sohn, a finance and economics professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. "But the recovery will be painfully slow. It will take years, probably a decade to get back to where we were at the end of last year."

The employment report is compiled from two separate surveys. According to a Reuters poll of economists, the survey of households is likely to show the unemployment rate jumped to 19.8% in May from 14.7% in April, which was the highest since 1948 when the government started keeping records. The survey of establishments is forecast showing nonfarm payrolls dropped by 8 million jobs after a record 20.537 million plunge in April.

That would bring total job losses to 29.4 million since March, when US states began to shut down non-essential businesses to rein in the coronavirus. That would be more than three times the jobs lost during the 2007-09 Great Recession, and it took six years recoup the jobs lost during that downturn.

Economists are split on whether the government`s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) is helping. The PPP, part of a historic fiscal package worth nearly $3 trillion, offers businesses loans that can be partially forgiven if used for employee pay.

The Labor Department`s Bureau of Labor Statistic (BLS), which compiles the employment report, said a misclassification by respondents made the unemployment rate lower than it really was in April. A large number of people had classified themselves as being "employed on temporary layoff" instead of "unemployed on temporary layoff."

Without the misclassification, the April rate would have been closer to 19%. Some economists expect the BLS addressed this problem in May, which could account for estimates for May`s unemployment rate in the Reuters survey being as high as 27%. The jobless rate neared 25% during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Political risk 
The labor market distress poses a significant risk to Presidential Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election and whose administration has been severely criticized for its handling of the pandemic. Though many economists expect the unemployment rate to peak in May, it is forecast to be above 10% when Americans head to the polls on Nov. 3.

The US has been facing backlash from its citizens for the past week for discriminating against the minority groups. The protests started when an African American man, George Floyd, a suspect in a case was tortured to death by a police officer, even though he was unarmed.

To help in this cause,&nbsp;Uber Technologies Inc&nbsp;launched a feature on its food delivery app Uber Eats. This feature will allow the customers in the US and Canada to order from restaurants owned specifically by Black people.

The app, in the US and Canada, will bear a banner&nbsp;reading: "Support Black-owned restaurants," under which the customers will be able to find a list of nearby restaurants.

The company has claimed that the new feature has been installed in public demand, and the list of restaurants has been compiled by the staff on local knowledge and research, and public resources.

This event was the only one of its size on Chinese soil. It was a tradition to keep the memories of those killed-- alive.

It has now been called off citing a ban on large gatherings. Hong Kong is fighting back nonetheless with&nbsp;smaller gatherings held across the city.

The citizens are paying tributes from wherever they are. They are also fighting back in the Hong Kong legislature. Beijing has managed to get a controversial bill passed. The national anthem bill criminalises disrespect of China's national anthem. It makes the singing of the national anthem compulsory in Hong Kong.

Pro-democracy lawmakers say it will tighten Beijing's grip on their city and that they will never let this bill become a law. 700 kilometres away from Hong Kong. Taiwan too is fighting back.

Tsai Ing-Wen, the Taiwanese president has urged Beijing to acknowledge the Tiananmen crackdown. She said: "Around the world, there are 365 days in a year yet in China one of those days is purposely forgotten each year in Taiwan, there were once days missing from our calendar but we've worked to bring them to light, I hope, one day China can say the same."

Taiwan wants China to confront the legacy of this massacre. So does the world. The US state secretary Mike Pompeo said: "For the first time in 30 years, Hong Kong authorities denied permission to hold the Tiananmen vigil. If there is any doubt about Beijing's intent, it is to deny Hong Konger a voice and a choice, making them the same as mainlanders. So much for two systems."

&nbsp;Also backing Hong Kong's independence is the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has given his government's biggest message of intent. He says China must not infringe on the political and civic freedoms in Hong Kong.

The order is billed as a way to "support and accelerate" the economic recovery from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and improve US energy and other infrastructure, according to bullet points summarizing the order seen by Reuters.

It calls for public works and highway projects as well as energy projects like pipelines and terminals to be expedited, and instructs the Interior, Agriculture and Defense Departments to accelerate projects on federal lands.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told reporters earlier on Thursday that Trump would sign an order related to permitting for energy and other projects in the afternoon, but did not give details.

It calls for public works and highway projects as well as energy projects like pipelines and terminals to be expedited, and instructs the Interior, Agriculture and Defense Departments to accelerate projects on federal lands. White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told reporters earlier on Thursday that Trump would sign an order related to permitting for energy and other projects in the afternoon, but did not give details. Trump has been a vocal advocate of fossil fuels as president and has sought to roll back regulations slowing their development and reduce state powers to block projects for environmental reasons. Earlier this year, the Trump administration proposed to streamline the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), a bedrock environmental regulation that creates time-consuming environmental reviews and public feedback requirements for major infrastructure projects. The proposal is currently going through a public comment and review period.

The protests have been calling for an end to police brutality against people of colour, many researchers have pointed how African American have more risk of being assaulted by the police.

The National Guard remains to be deployed across the country as all states erupted in protests. Instances of sporadic violence were reported in Washington, Oregon, Portal.

The police were seen tossing tear gas and flash grenades at the protesters who set off fireworks.

New York City remained relatively calm after a night of intensive looting, which hit even luxury stores in the city. After this, over 200 arrests were made by the police, which they claimed were for violating the curfew.
