The Labor Department reported Friday that employers added 390,000 jobs, the 17th straight monthly gain.

The unemployment rate was 3.6 per cent&nbsp;for the third straight month, near a half-century low. Average hourly earnings for employees rose by 10 cents, or 0.3 per cent&nbsp;on a monthly basis, and were 5.2 per cent&nbsp;higher than a year earlier.

Record levels of consumer spending, which makes up about 70 per cent of the economy, have driven business expansion and job creation, as companies try to keep up with demand for a wide variety of goods and services. The hiring push has lent some workers a degree of agency regarding pay and conditions that is unfamiliar to both job seekers and employers.

Yet the Federal Reserve is worried that rising labor costs will be passed along to consumers, constraining efforts to bring down inflation, which is near a 40-year high.

Last month, Fed Chair Jerome Powell stressed that his institution’s attempts to cool off prices were a part of ensuring a more sustainable form of full employment. “We’ve got to get back to price stability so that we can have a labor market where people’s wages aren’t being eaten up by inflation,” he said. “And where we can have a long expansion, too.”

The environment for job seekers remains as strong as it has been since the 1960s, some economists say. The Kansas City Fed’s labour market conditions index — which is based on 24 measures tracking the market’s tightness — is near highs last seen in 2000.

In a speech, this week to the Economic Club of Memphis, Tennessee, James Bullard, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, noted that “real-time indicators” of economic growth suggested expansion would continue for several quarters.

It appears that fewer Americans will be able to fully share in a continued expansion, however. There are growing signals that lower-income families, which have been hit the hardest by price increases and used up much of their pandemic-era savings, are beginning to pull back on discretionary purchases. The cost of groceries is an intensifying headache, and energy prices, which are roughly 30 per cent&nbsp;higher than a year ago, are forcing people to make difficult decisions about what goods and services to cut back on to prevent further erosion of their budgets.

Inflation has already made a striking impact: Personal savings as a percentage of personal disposable income fell to 4.4 per cent&nbsp;in April, the Commerce Department reported last week. It was the lowest rate since 2008, and far from the anomalous high of 33 per cent&nbsp;in April 2020 at the height of federal aid.

Throughout the year, inflation and general volatility in the economy have created a dissonance between sour consumer sentiment and relatively positive raw data. Checking accounts are still above 2019 levels for nearly all income groups. And the share of households under duress as a result of debt burdens is historically low. Auto loan delinquency rates are low. And new bankruptcies and debt-collection proceedings are at their lowest level since the New York Fed began collecting data on them in 1999.

The Fed’s aim is to engineer a modest economic slowdown that avoids a painful recession. Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, a consulting firm, insisted that “whether we have a recession or not isn’t what matters” compared with the characteristics of any potential downturn, such as its depth and duration.

“Recency bias has us thinking of a recession being like the covid&nbsp;crisis, or the global financial crisis, but these were ‘once in a hundred years’ events which are unlikely to repeat in the near term,” he said. “At the same time, the elevated inflation backdrop has brought comparisons with the 1970s, but there again the situation was different, lasting 15 years from the late 1960s to the early 1980s and featuring two moderate and two deep recessions.”

Bumblebees are eligible for protection as endangered or threatened “fish” under California law, a state appeals court held in a win for environmental groups and the state’s Fish and Game Commission.

The Sacramento-based California Court of Appeal reversed a lower court’s ruling Tuesday for seven agricultural groups who argued that the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) expressly protects only “birds, mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and plants” – not insects.

While “fish” is “commonly understood to refer to aquatic species, the term of art employed by the Legislature … is not so limited,” Associate Justice Ronald Robie wrote for the appeals court.

CESA itself does not define “fish,” but the law is part of the California Fish and Game Code. The code’s definition includes any “mollusk, crustacean, invertebrate (or) amphibian,” Robie wrote. All those categories “encompass terrestrial and aquatic species,” and the state legislature has already approved the listing of at least one land-based mollusk, the opinion said.

“Accordingly, a terrestrial invertebrate, like each of the four bumblebee species, may be listed as an endangered or threatened species,” Robie wrote, joined by Acting Presiding Justice Cole Blease and Associate Justice Andrea Lynn Hoch.

Matthew Sanders of Stanford Law School’s Environmental Law Clinic hailed the decision as “a win for the bumblebees, all imperiled invertebrates in California, and the California Endangered Species Act.” Insects are “foundational to California’s agricultural production and healthy ecosystems,” he added.

Sanders’ clients – the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Center for Food Safety – petitioned the Fish and Game Commission to add the Crotch's bumblebee, Franklin’s bumblebee, Suckley cuckoo bumblebee, and Western bumblebee to the state’s endangered species list in 2018.

However, the Almond Alliance of California, the California Farm Bureau Federation, and five other agricultural groups filed suit in Sacramento County Superior Court to establish that CESA does not protect insects – a point on which the legislature, agencies, and courts have vacillated since 1980, they said.

In 2020, the Superior Court ruled that the law’s reference to “invertebrates” had to be read in context, and included only aquatic animals.

Paul Weiland of Nossaman, lead counsel for the agriculture groups, said in an email Tuesday that they were “disappointed” and reviewing the decision before deciding “whether to seek further review.”

Attorneys for the state did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Sometimes known by his alias 'Chessplayer,'&nbsp;Rodriguez&nbsp;was extradited to the United States in 2004. The 83-year-old was serving time at a federal&nbsp;prison&nbsp;in Butner, North Carolina.

"The children and wife of Gilberto&nbsp;Rodriguez&nbsp;Orejuela&nbsp;regretfully inform that yesterday, Tuesday May 31, 2022, at 6:54 p.m., our father and husband died of a lymphoma," the family said in a statement shared by&nbsp;Rodriguez's daughter Alexandra.

They were beginning the process of extraditing his remains back to Colombia, his family said.

Rodriguez's 1995 arrest by&nbsp;Colombian&nbsp;authorities marked the beginning of the disintegration of the Cali cartel, which once controlled 80 per cent&nbsp;of the global cocaine market, according to a contemporary report from the&nbsp;US&nbsp;Drug&nbsp;Enforcement Administration.

The doctor said that most likely I ovulated twice, released two eggs and they got fertilised at different times, about a week apart. I 100% believe it was a miracle just because of everything that happened in my pregnancy journey,” Winhold told Metro. &nbsp;

“I knew I wanted more kids. I'm very optimistic, and I was like, ‘It's going to happen,' and I knew it was part of my journey and life to be a mom, and so I knew I didn't want to give up but going to therapy made me learn how to heal and understand that it wasn't my fault. It took a lot of time,” Winhold told New York Post.
