Aptera's new financial partner, US Capital Global, is spearheading the solar electric vehicle (SEV) startup's latest funding round, which aims to raise up to USD 60 million through convertible notes. This funding is intended to enable Aptera to complete its production-intent SEV builds, carry out crash testing, and initiate a very limited production run in early 2025. Here are the latest updates.

Regardless of how Aptera Motors' venture ultimately unfolds, the solar EV startup has already demonstrated the significant impact of strong public support. Much of Aptera's progress so far has been driven by crowdfunding and investments from reservation holders.

To date, Aptera has successfully raised $135 million from over 17,000 investors, a feat the company claims is the most successful crowdfunded raise in history. However, scaling up remains a formidable challenge for startups in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, and Aptera's experience is no exception.

While Aptera remains operational, the company has been notably transparent about its need for additional funds to achieve its goal of starting solar EV production and scaling up to deliver its technology at a larger scale.

After a successful Accelerator Program that secured its first 2,000 build slots for investors, Aptera transitioned from crowdfunding to seeking new sources of capital, including options for self-directed IRAs, in preparation for a planned initial public offering (IPO).

In May, Aptera announced it had engaged investment firm US Capital Group to support its efforts following the conclusion of its Regulation A funding program on June 30, 2024. US Capital is now leading a new investment round aimed at advancing Aptera's solar EV development.

According to Aptera Motors, its new partner, the SEC-regulated investment group US Capital, is now providing eligible investors with a fresh opportunity to invest in the solar EV startup. The new round offers up to $60 million in convertible notes, which, according to US Capital's Aptera investor presentation, will provide the startup with sufficient capital to produce 10-12 validation prototypes, complete crash testing, and manufacture 10-15 production-intent vehicles for sale. As noted by US Capital Global CEO Charles Towle:

"With its extensive patent portfolio, including over 34 patents in process, Aptera is dedicated to revolutionizing the automotive industry. Aptera seeks to raise $60 million through convertible notes to kickstart the production of its flagship vehicle. The company has already secured substantial order traction, with over 48,000 vehicle pre-orders amounting to more than $1.7 billion in potential revenue. For investors, Aptera presents a compelling opportunity. Eligible investors are now invited to participate in this unique USD 60 million convertible note offering."

If successful, this 2024 capital raise should also provide Aptera with the funds necessary to purchase equipment for low-volume solar EV production, which would, in turn, grant access to additional grants and financing totaling another USD 35 million.

Aptera's planned funding stages appear manageable compared to those of larger EV manufacturers. Nevertheless, US Capital’s investment deck highlights the significant challenges the startup will face, particularly regarding scaling and achieving the initially promised vehicle prices.

For those waiting for an Aptera solar EV, patience will be required, as deliveries might not commence until 2026 at the earliest. According to the investment deck, Aptera plans to produce only 371 vehicles during its initial low-volume production phase in early 2025, ramping up to 11,000 units in 2026 and eventually reaching an annual production of 20,000 vehicles.

With potential order revenue reaching $1.7 billion, demand for Aptera's vehicles is evident, and early investments have propelled the company to this point. However, the next phase will necessitate securing additional capital quickly, and the demand for funds is expected to grow as the startup aims to scale and make a significant impact on the EV industry.

We will continue to monitor Aptera's progress and its latest investment appeals to keep you informed about its developments. If you're prepared to wait a few years, you can still reserve an Aptera solar EV with a down payment of just USD 70.

Iran remains open to resuming negotiations with the United States to restore the nuclear agreement from which Washington under then President Donald Trump backed out in 2018, Iran's acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri-Kani told Newsweek in an interview published on Tuesday (Jul 16).

Bagheri-Kani's comments come ahead of his address to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York.

The United States, under Trump, withdrew from the nuclear accord between Iran and six world powers in 2018, which had restricted Tehran's nuclear program.

Despite indirect talks during the incumbent President Joe Biden's administration to revive the deal, negotiations have stalled. Iran remains part of the agreement but has reduced its commitments in response to US sanctions.

Newsweek quoted Bagheri-Kani as saying, "On the foreign policy front, Tehran remains open to resuming negotiations with Washington toward restoring mutual participation in a nuclear deal."

However, Bagheri-Kani also added that Iran will continue its focus on strengthening ties with China, Russia, and neighbouring countries. He further stated that Iran would call for greater action against Israel in the wake of the war in Gaza.

The Biden administration announced last week that the United States was not ready to resume nuclear talks with Iran under its new president.

Following the election of reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier in July, there was speculation that Tehran might pursue more serious talks with Washington. However, Pezeshkian has so far signalled the continuation of Iran's regional policies of projecting power.

Bagheri-Kani assumed the role of acting foreign minister after the death of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May. His trip to New York for the UNSC meeting is seen by some as a possible attempt to advance the issue of renewed talks, despite Iran not currently being a member of the council.

But after his election, he reaffirmed Tehran's support for militant proxy forces in the region and continued the insistence on the anti-western agenda of Raisi's days.

When asked about Iran's nuclear capabilities and whether the country might pursue weapons development, Bagheri-Kani reiterated Iran's commitment to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

"Iran will make use of all its potentials and capacities within the framework of the NPT and the Safeguards Agreement to expand its peaceful nuclear activities according to its national plans and programs," he added.

Trump assassination attempt: Trump has increased security over Iran plot

Republican candidate Donald Trump's running mate for the 2024 Presidential elections, JD Vance, has asserted that China, not Russia, poses the biggest threat to the U.S. Does this suggest a more confrontational approach to China if Trump is re-elected? Would the U.S. adopt a more aggressive stance towards China than during Trump's previous presidency, if he returns to power? What implications does this have for Europe and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine?

Kaspersky Labs, the Russian anti-virus software maker, announced Monday that it will be winding down its US operations starting July 20. The decision comes nearly a month after the Biden administration's plans to prohibit the sale of Kaspersky products in the United States over claimed security concerns.

Effective immediately, Kaspersky has stopped selling its products to US consumers. Currently, when a US-based buyer accesses its website, it flashes the notice, indicating that the "purchase unavailable for US customers." Additionally, all US-based positions are set to be axed as part of the phasing-out process.

Last month, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced her intentions to ban sales of Kaspersky antivirus software in the United States, citing security risks due to Russian influence over the cybersecurity company. The US government did more than slap the cybersecurity company with these concerns in its senior leadership by placing sanctions on the chief business development officer, chief operating officer, legal officer, and corporate communications chief at Kaspersky.

The news of the company's plan to leave the US was first reported by CNN.

This new sanction blocks downloads of the software updates, sale of licences, and resales of Kaspersky products to any customer based in the US with effect from September 29.

New U.S. business for Kaspersky are to be barred 30 days after the restrictions were first announced on June 20.

In essence, Kaspersky Labs is going to stop its operations in the United States because of the heightened security measures by the US government. The restriction reflects lingering concerns about the risks associated with cyber security with the company, hence a significant change in the products for digital security available within the United States.
