A 57-year-old advocate was arrested on Sunday for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl in Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Express on Sunday.

According to a report by news agency ANI, the accused advocate has been identified as KP Prem Ananth and he was a BJP candidate in 2006 assembly election from RK Nagar constituency.

Ananth allegedly assaulted the minor while she was asleep.

After she woke up started shouting following which her family nabbed him and informed the travelling ticket examiner. A police complaint has been registered.

A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act), 2012 has been charged and is now in Coimbatore prison.

The Chennai-based lawyer had boarded the train from Coimbatore on April 21 night, police said.

Recently a rape case by another BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao triggered a massive outrage in the country.

The case is now being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The case received national attention after the victim and her family attempted to immolate herself in front of the residence of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

The apex court bench was annoyed as it asked the advocate, who had alleged that FIRs were not lodged by the police in rape cases involving powerful people like ministers, MPs or MLAs, what his locus standi was vis-a-vis the Unnao rape case, news agency PTI reported.

It questioned the locus of the advocate in filing the PIL, wondering how public interest litigation can be filed in criminal cases.

A bench of Justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao asked advocate ML Sharma how he was aggrieved with the Unnao rape case and how was he connected to the case.

"The Allahabad High Court has already passed some orders in the case. Mr Sharma you are not an aggrieved person in the case. There cannot be a PIL in a criminal case," the bench observed.

Sharma reportedly alleged that in several rape cases involving former ministers or MLAs, no FIR was&nbsplodged by the police, wherever powerful people were involved.

"Who are you in these rapes cases? Don't be generic. Is any relative of a victim of rape before us for a&nbspremedy? Do you have any relative who has been raped," Justice Bobde asked the lawyer.

An uneasy calm prevailed among the lawyers in the courtroom after the bench's remarks.

When Sharma persisted with his arguments, the bench dismissed his petition saying it cannot be entertained.&nbsp

The apex court had on April 11 agreed to hear a plea for a CBI probe into the Unnao gangrape case allegedly involving a BJP lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh.

Sharma's plea has also alleged that the rape victim's father was tortured and killed in the police custody at the behest of the "ruling party" in the state. He also sought the court's direction for a CBI probe into a case of kidnapping and rape of a minor girl last July allegedly involving a BJP legislator.

Alleging that the complaint had not named the legislator "under political pressure" and the state police would not carry out a "fair investigation under compulsion", it said the matter should be handed over to the CBI for independent investigation.

The CBI court has sent BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar's brother and one of the accused Atul Singh along with five others&nbsp;to police custody for four days in connection with the Unnao rape case.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The CBI has so far arrested two people in the case.

The CBI on Saturday made a second arrest in the Unnao rape case as it took into custody Shashi Singh, the woman who allegedly took the victim to BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on the day of crime.

Unnao rape case: CBI arrests BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar

The Uttar Pradesh police have suspended the Medical superintendent and Casualty officer of the Unnao District Hospital.

The police have also initiated a&nbsp;departmental inquiry against three other doctors.

The CBI had earlier in the day detained the alleged accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection to the rape of the minor.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered three separate cases in the alleged rape of a girl by the BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

The CBI's investigation into the matter started after the request of the Uttar Pradesh police.

An FIR was registered against the BJP MLA on Thursday on various charges under the IPC. The Case pertains to the alleged gang rape of a minor and the death of her father in&nbsp;police custody.

Unnao rape case: Medical superintendent, Casualty officer at Unnao district Hospital suspended

Facing flak over Kathua and Unnao rape cases, the BJP on Friday said those accused should be given a stringent punishment and claimed that the police acted quickly in both the matters.

BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi defended the two party's ministers, who had joined a rally against the police probe in the Kathua rape and murder case, claiming that they were "misled" into attending the protest.

In a press conference, Lekhi also accused the opposition parties of doing dangerous politics over these incidents.

She said Bar Association of Jammu president B S Slathia, who spearheaded the protest in Kathua, was Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad's polling agent in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Lekhi also claimed that these two incidents were selectively highlighted to target the BJP and said that a similar case of rape and murder of a minor girl in Assam had happened, but it never got the prominence that the Kathua and Unnao cases have got.

An eight-year-old girl from the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community disappeared near her house on January 10 in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district.

A week later, her body was found in the same area.

In the Unnao case, the victim has alleged she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar at his residence on June 4, 2017.

In February, the girl's family moved the court seeking to include the MLA's name in the rape case. After filing of the case, the victim's father was booked by the police under the Arms Act on April 3 this year and put in jail, where he died on April 8.

Give stringent punishment to perpetrators of Kathua, Unnao cases: BJP

The Allahabad High Court on Friday directed the CBI to arrest BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, accused in the Unnao rape case.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DB Bhosale and Justice Suneet Kumar gave the direction to the agency after the counsel for the Uttar Pradesh government informed it that Sengar has been detained for interrogation and not arrested yet.

The court directed the CBI to carry out investigation strictly in accordance with law and to consider filing an application for cancellation of bail granted to other accused in the case.

It also directed the CBI to file the status report by May 2.

The bench passed the order on a letter written by senior advocate Gopal Swaroop Chaturvedi demanding a court-monitored investigation of the incident and treated it as a PIL.

Yesterday, the court had asked the Advocate General whether the state government proposes to arrest Sengar.

Advocate General Raghvendra Singh had replied that he was not in a position to make any statement in this regard and police will proceed in accordance with the law only after recording the statement of the complainant and witnesses.

The CBI registered three separate cases in connection with the alleged rape and detained Sengar for questioning in the early hours today.

The cases pertain to the alleged rape, killing of the girl's father and a case of arms act which was slapped on her father in which he was arrested by local police.

Meanwhile, Police said the investigation will&nbsp;continue&nbsp;until the CBI takes over the case.

On Thursday, Home secretary held a press conference&nbsp;with other police officials in which the DGP&nbsp;&nbsp;referred to the accused as 'mananiy vidhayak'(honarable&nbsp;MLA).&nbsp;

"The arrest of Kuldeep Singh will decided by CBI as&nbsp;he is an accused and not a convict," DGP said during the press briefing.

The district magistrate of Unnao has also submitted a report to the state government on lapses on part of the district hospital in the custodial death of the victim's father.

Two doctors have&nbsp;been suspended for "negligence"&nbsp;in the case.

Based on the SIT report submitted by ADG Lucknow Zone Rajeev Krishna, the state government has also decided to suspend D K Dwivedi, CMS and Prashant Upadhyay, EMO.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against three doctors namely Manoj Kumar (ortho-surgeon), G P Sachan (surgeon) and Gaurav Agrawal (EMO) for laxity in giving proper medical care to the victim's father, both prior to judicial custody and on referral from jail to the district hospital while in judicial custody," he said the statement.

Circle Officer Safipur, Kunwar Bahadur Singh has also been suspended for negligence in handling the repeated complaints given by the victim

The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday ordered registration of an FIR against BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in connection with the alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman in Unnao district.

It also ordered to hand over the twin cases of rape and the custodial death of the victim's father to the CBI.

A separate inquiry report has been submitted by DIG (Prison) Love Kumar on the conduct of the Unnao jail officials during the detention of the victim's father, said an official statement issued tonight.

The district magistrate of Unnao has also submitted a report to the state government on lapses on part of the district hospital.

Based on the SIT report submitted by ADG Lucknow Zone Rajeev Krishna, the BJP-led state government has decided to suspend D K Dwivedi, CMS and Prashant Upadhyay, EMO.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against three doctors namely Manoj Kumar (ortho-surgeon), G P Sachan (surgeon) and Gaurav Agrawal (EMO) for laxity in giving proper medical care to the victim's father, both prior to judicial custody and on referral from jail to the district hospital while in judicial custody," said the statement.

"Circle Officer Safipur, Kunwar Bahadur Singh has been suspended for negligence in handling the repeated complaints given by the victim," it said.

The state government has also ordered to provide adequate security to the victim and her family.

An 18-year-old woman had created flutters after she accused the BJP MLA of raping her. She tried to immolate herself in front of the CM's residence, seeking justice. Her father was arrested and later died in custody.

A global human rights body on Wednesday said the Unnao gangrape case, allegedly involving a BJP MLA, and the subsequent death of the woman’s father in judicial custody painted a “chilling picture”, and demanded an independent investigation.

Amnesty International India’s Programmes Director Asmita Basu, in a statement also urged the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to the notices issued by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in this case and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The NHRC had yesterday sent a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state police chief seeking a detailed report on the custodial death of the 50-year-old man after his daughter had accused a BJP MLA and his aides of gangrape in Unnao, and asked the authorities to ensure “the aggrieved family is not subjected to further harassment”.

Days after the 17-year-old woman accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother Atul Singh and his aides of raping her, her father had died in custody on Monday. Prior to her father’s death, the woman had also tried to immolate herself outside the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s house in Lucknow. The death of her father in custody while seeking justice for his daughter, “suggests that the UP police have turned their backs on human rights,” the Amnesty India said.

Unnao rape case paints chilling picture, says Amnesty; demands independent probe

The Congress today dismissed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed hunger strike over the non-functioning of parliament as a "photo-op", even as the party demanded sacking of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the Unnao rape case.

Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala said the proposed fast by the BJP MPs led by the prime minister tomorrow was a "drama", adding that time has come for the PM to take 'sanyas' (retirement).

"It is only a photo opportunity. The BJP did not allow the parliament, the country's temple of democracy, to function when they were in the opposition and neither are they allowing it to function now when they are in power.

"Prime Minister ji, it is not the time to observe fast, in view of your failures... It is time to take retirement instead. If you do not wake up now, you should understand that the time of your retirement will come in 2019 when people will vote you out," he said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi earlier today hit out at the Centre over the alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman by a BJP MLA and the custodial death of her father in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district.

"The brutality unleashed on a father seeking justice for his daughter in Uttar Pradesh has shamed humanity. I hope the prime minister will soon observe a fast over the atrocities committed on women, failure of law and order and rising anarchy under the BJP rule," he tweeted in Hindi.

Gandhi also posted a purported video in which the victim's father is seen speaking against the BJP MLA.

The video, in which the victim's father alleged that he was mercilessly beaten up by the MLA's brother and others, went viral and was shown by several TV channels.

Surjewala said justice for women in BJP-ruled states had become a "mirage" as the "BJP's eco-system is influencing the legal process by building a false narrative".

"Exploiting the religion/caste of the rape victim, threatening her family, even killing her father is the new modus operandi of the vigilante groups mushrooming under the patronage of the BJP!

"Rampant abuse of political power to influence and subvert legal process and shield is the chief characteristic of the BJP which politically exploited the Nirbhaya rape case, and is now doing the same with rape cases in Kathua (J&K) and Unnao (UP)," he said.

Taking a dig at the BJP's popular slogans on saving the girl child, the Congress communications in-charge said, "'Beti Bachao' has now become 'Beti Ke Pita Ko Bhi Marwao' and the slogan of 'Bahut Hua Naari Par Vaar..' is now a cruel joke on the women of India".

He also hit out at the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government for withdrawing a 7-year-old rape case against former MoS Chinamayanand in the Vajpayee government.

"If 'goondas' (hooligans) are going to be protected in this fashion by UP chief minister and the BJP government, he has no right to continue as the chief minister," Surjewala alleged.

"Ever since he (Adityanath) has taken over, number of rape cases have gone up by 36 per cent in the northern state. Incidents of rape between April 1, 2017 and January 31, 2018 stand at 15,000," he said.

The Congress leader also cited the data of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) stating that Uttar Pradesh topped the country in 2016 with 4,816 cases of rape. The other two states with the highest rates of crime against women were Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, both ruled by the BJP, he said.

Surjewala added that 803 incidents of rape and 729 murders were reported in the first two months of Adityanath's tenure.

Congress terms PM's fast 'photo-op'; seeks UP CM's resignation

Two days after the father of a woman, who alleged rape by a BJP MLA, died in custody in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh, the politician's wife today demanded a narco test on her husband and the survivor.

The 18-year-old woman, who had tried to kill herself outside the Chief Minister's house here, on the other hand alleged that she had been confined to a hotel room by the district administration and her uncle was killed by the MLA's brother and henchmen, who later also killed her father.

She said, "I want justice, why are they pressuring me for an apology? Do they want my (another) uncle to be killed too?"

A purported video of the alleged rape survivor's father before his death also went viral and was shown by several TV channels, in which he alleged that he was mercilessly beaten up by the MLA's brother and others, including with rifle butts. It also showed the deceased person's back with serious wounds, but its veracity could not be ascertained.

Meanwhile in the state capital, Sangeeta Sengar, wife of the MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, told reporters after meeting DGP OP Singh that there was a political conspiracy against her family and accused the complainant of not being consistent in her statements.

"We demand that a narco test be conducted on my husband and the girl as well as her uncle. This will help in ascertaining the truth and presenting the correct picture.

"We have full sympathy with the girl, as her modesty was outraged... There are political reasons behind this and my husband has been made a pawn," Sangeeta Sengar said.

"My husband is innocent and it is my request that he should not be called a rapist. He has been in politics for the past 15 years and has been serving the society and people," she said, adding, her daughters were unable to concentrate on their studies in the wake of this incident.

She said the allegations against her brother-in-law Atul were false too.

On whether her husband should resign from the UP Assembly, she retorted, "Why should he quit even before he is declared guilty? Merely on the basis of charges, why should he resign?"

She said she wanted to meet Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and apprise him of the facts.

Besides the MLA's wife, the alleged rape victim has also demanded a CBI probe in the entire matter.

The victim claimed that the district administration in Unnao had virtually confined her to a hotel room "without a phone or water and guards at every corner".

"I can't charge my mobile, there is no TV, no water. We are told we can't go outside," the girl told a TV news channel.

"We are told we can't go outside, there are guards at every corner. When we ask them for help, they say it isn't their job. Is this justice?" the girl said.

The MLA's brother Atul was arrested yesterday from Unnao by a crime branch team.

A Special Investigation Team headed by Additional Director General of Police (Lucknow zone) visited Makhi village of the rape victim and collected information to submit a report to the chief minister.

"The SIT team will probe on all the aspects of the case and act accordingly. Security has been provided to the victim's family," ADGP (Lucknow zone) Rajiv Krishna said.

TV news channels ran the comments made purportedly by the alleged victim's father before his death in which he claimed that he was mercilessly beaten up by the MLA's brother.

The Supreme Court said today it will hear next week the plea for a CBI probe into the case. The Allahabad High Court has ordered that the deceased's body should not be cremated, if already not done so.

However, the mortal remains of the deceased were consigned to the flames yesterday, hours after his custodial death.

The Congress demanded the dismissal of Uttar Pradesh chief minister, dubbing his government a "Ravan" regime which has failed to protect women.
