24 February 2022 will forever be recalled as the day when Russia started its brutal, unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine. This was and remains a case of pure aggression and a clear-cut breach of the UN Charter. This war is neither ‘just a European issue’, nor is it about the ‘West versus the rest’. It is about the kind of world we all want to live in: no one is safe in a world where the illegal use of force – by a nuclear power and permanent member of the Security Council – would somehow be ‘normalised’. That is why international law must be enforced everywhere to protect everyone from power politics, blackmail and military attack.

One year on, there is a risk that people become inured to the images of war crimes and atrocities that they see – because there are so many; that the words we use start to lose their significance – because we have to repeat them so often; that we get tired and weaken our resolve – because time is passing and the task at hand is hard.&nbsp;

This we cannot do. Because every day, Russia keeps violating the UN charter, creating a dangerous precedent for the whole world with its imperialist policy. Every day, Russia keeps killing innocent Ukrainian women, men and children, raining down its missiles on cities and civilian infrastructure. Every day, Russia keeps spreading lies and fabrications.&nbsp;

For the European Union and our partners, there is no alternative to staying the course of our ‘triple strategy’: supporting Ukraine, putting pressure on Russia to stop its illegal aggression and helping the rest of the world cope with the fallout.&nbsp;

This is what we have been doing for one year now – and successfully so. We have adopted unprecedented sanctions; cut our dependency on Russian fossil fuels; and in close collaboration with key partners reduced by 50% the energy revenues the Kremlin gets to finance its aggression. Working together, we have also mitigated the global ripple effects with food and energy prices declining, partly thanks to our Solidarity Lanes and to the Black Sea Grain Initiative.&nbsp;

It is not enough to say that we want Ukraine to be able to defend itself – it needs the means to do so. So, for the first time ever, the EU has supplied weapons to a country under attack. Indeed, the EU is now the leading provider of military training for Ukrainian personnel so they can defend their country. We are also offering significant macro-financial and humanitarian aid to support the Ukrainian people. And we have decided to respond positively to Ukraine’s request to join the EU. Finally, we are working to ensure accountability for the war crimes that Russia has committed.&nbsp;

Ukraine has shown its remarkable resilience, partly thanks to this support. And Russia has grown more isolated, thanks to global sanctions and the international condemnation by the overwhelming majority of states in the UN General Assembly. Our collective goal is and remains a democratic Ukraine that prevails; pushing out the invader, restoring its full sovereignty and, with that, restoring international legality.&nbsp;

Above all, we want peace in Ukraine, a comprehensive and lasting peace that is in line with the UN Charter and international law. Supporting Ukraine and working for peace go hand in hand since if Russia’s illegal aggression were to succeed, the repercussions would spread globally. The risk of regional hotspots in Asia, such as the South and East China Seas, the Taiwan Strait and others, turning into open conflicts would increase. That is why Europe and its partners in the Asia Pacific have to take a joint stand. The support of many Asian countries at the UN and elsewhere for the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty and international law has been crucial.&nbsp;

But the reverse is also true: the EU is fully committed to uphold international law everywhere, not just in Ukraine. We work for peace and security around the world including in the Asia Pacific.&nbsp; 
 
We need to be clear that Russia’s actions are responsible for the economic shockwaves in terms of food, energy and fertilisers. We have always exempted food and fertilisers from EU sanctions and we are monitoring any possible unintended effects.&nbsp;

More broadly, the Russian invasion has underlined the need for both Europe and Asia to avoid excessive dependencies. We must reinforce our collaboration to build more resilient and inclusive economies, protect our democracies and strengthen social cohesion.

History and justice are on the side of Ukraine. But to accelerate history and achieve justice, we need to amplify our ‘triple strategy’. We know this is a collective task. That is why the EU is counting on all its partners, to act in a spirit of joint responsibility and solidarity: to ensure that aggression fails and international law prevails.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian military, on Sunday (February 26) said that Russia conducted an unsuccessful operation near Yahidne over the past day. This comes after Moscow’s Wagner group claimed that they have captured the Ukrainian village of Berkhivka which is located on the outskirts of Bakhmut. These conflicting claims could not be independently verified. The mercenary group claimed to have captured the villages in eastern Ukrain, a region where the fighting has intensified in recent weeks.&nbsp;

The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, in his morning update, said that Russia’s offensive efforts have been focused along the Bakhmut front line which is also where Yahidne is located. The key eastern Ukrainian city has witnessed some of the most intense fighting where there are now only some 5,000 residents out of the 70,000 prior to the now-a-year-old Russian invasion.&nbsp;

What the Wagner group had claimed

The Russian mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin&nbsp;had on Saturday&nbsp;claimed that they have captured the eastern Ukrainian village&nbsp;of Yahidne. "At 1900 on 25th February, storm units of the Wagner Private Military Company secured complete control of the locality of Yagodnoye (Yahidne) to the north of Bakhmut," said&nbsp;Prigozhin, in an audio clip,&nbsp;as per Reuters.

This also came a day after he had claimed control of Berkhivka which is a village located on the outskirts of Bakhmut. "Berkhivka is fully under our control. Units of Wagner Private Military Company are in full control of Berkhivka," said the Wagner chief, on social media.

Earlier this month, Prigozhin, in an interview had also said how Bakhmut is the key to Russia’s plan to firmly establish its presence in eastern Ukraine.&nbsp;

What has the Ukrainian military said?

In the aforementioned Ukrainian bulletin, the military said that Russia has conducted “unsuccessful offensives” in six settlements in the eastern Donetsk region, which Moscow has previously claimed to have annexed and also includes Yahidne and Berkhivka.&nbsp;

Ukraine military denies Russian mercenary Wagner group's claim of capturing villages near Bakhmut

Three weeks had passed since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. The world and global organisations were expecting Kyiv to fall soon, finding it difficult to believe that the war-hit nation can sustain even a month of offensive.

At such a crucial point, a video appeared in which Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his signature green attire, was seen addressing his soldiers from behind a podium on which the Ukrainian state emblem was present.

In the video, Zelensky was seen asking his soldiers to lay down their weapons and go back to their families. “There is no need to die in this war. I advise you to live,” he was seen as saying. The video was massively circulated on social media and briefly ran on Ukraine's television which suggested that the leader had fled from Kyiv. The video clearly indicated that the war is about to end, contrary to the fact that it's been now one year of war and the end is not in sight.

Deepfakes

The one-minute video clip shared was called a 'deepfake' – a term to define the sophisticated hoax in which artificial intelligence is used for creating a fake image and most commonly fake videos.

The video which was posted by the hackers was instantly removed from social media platforms and debunked. Zelensky dismissed it as a “childish provocation,” and mocked Russia for desperately spreading fake news.

In the last one year of the war, deepfakes have&nbsp;been just one element amongst the barrage of disinformation and manipulation which have shaped the information war.

Recruitment of serial killers, cannibal

In September 2022, reports surfaced of Russian President Vladimir Putin is recruiting serial killers, rapists and a maniac cannibal from prisons&nbsp;in a desperate attempt to win the Ukraine war. A report by Daily Mail claimed that the prisoners were ensured that they will be pardoned if they come out alive from the battlefield.

The recruitment was believed to have been carried out by Russia's Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Progozhin who had made visits to a former Gulag prisoner camp in Serbia, the reports had claimed. It was reported that several of these hired prisoners lost their lives on the battlefield. The reports of recruitment still remain unconfirmed.

Church on fire

In another incident, the story of a Russian church being set on fire in north-western Ukraine's Volyn region was broadcasted by ‘Channel One’, inciting emotions and anger among viewers. The news was intensely covered on January 15, 2022, in which it was claimed that the church was attached to the Moscow Patriarchate and the Ukrainian nationalists were responsible for the arson.

However, later the local authorities of Volyn confirmed that no church was set on fire in the area, calling the news “fake”.

The United Nations was established in 1945 after the end of World War II,&nbsp;to prevent similar wars in future and maintain international peace between nation-states.&nbsp;The message was very clear – the world cannot afford another war.

After 77 years of the establishment of the UN with the hope of maintaining peace in the global order, the imagery of a peaceful future was ruined by the fierce war that broke out between Russia and Ukraine, as the former launched&nbsp;an offensives to seize regions of Eastern Ukraine. The United Nations tried to take steps to bring the situation under control&nbsp;to prevent major humanitarian and environmental devastation.

UN dismisses warnings ahead of war

Weeks before the war broke out, the United States and the United Kingdom had issued warnings to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about Russia's intention to wage war against Ukraine, which were dismissed.

However, when Russian tanks entered the Ukrainian territory violating the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, Guterres was forced to consider the suggestion of paying a visit to Kyiv in a show of solidarity with the war-hit Ukraine and make a diplomatic effort to resolve the conflict between the two countries.

Resolutions, resolutions and resolutions

On March 2, a resolution was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly criticising Russia's “aggression” against Ukraine. Another resolution was adopted by the UN Human Rights Council on March 4 demanding the “swift and verifiable” withdrawal of Russian-backed armed groups and Russian troops from Ukrainian territories.

On March 5, the UN Human Rights Council called for the urgent establishment of an independent international commission of inquiry. The UN General Assembly demanded humanitarian access and civilian protection in Ukraine on March 24 while accusing Russia of creating a “dire” humanitarian situation.

On March 30, three human rights experts were appointed by the UN to investigate how Russia is violating international law in the war. On April 7, another resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly for the suspension of Russia from the Human Rights Council.

A new resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly on April 26 asking all the Security Council's five permanent members to justify the use of the veto.

UN's response to Bucha crimes

Bucha, a town in Kyiv's northwest, was seized by the Russian army quickly as they entered through neighbouring Belarus and reached the capital city's gates from where they were eventually forced to retreat.

However, the world was shocked when images of the carnage appeared in the media in April. Roads and pavements were seen littered with bodies of civilians, few had their hands tied behind their backs. Russia was accused of war crimes by Ukraine and the West, but Moscow denied them vehemently and said the images were “fake”.

Reacting to the incident, UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet had expressed how horrified she was on seeing images of the dead and graves in Bucha. She had also called for independent and effective investigations into the Bucha war crimes.

The United Nations also continued to express its deepening concerns over the apparent housing of prisoners of war in metal cages in the devastated city of Mariupol and the escalation in sexual crimes.

Grain deal – the high point of the UN's involvement in the war

Ukraine, which is the largest exporter of grain in the world, normally supplied 45 million tonnes of grains to the global agricultural market. However, after the invasion by Russia, ships were not able to get safe passage to and from Ukraine which led to the collection of mountains of grains in silos leading to global food crisis.

A Black Sea Grain Initiative was brokered on July 22 by the UN and Turkey which allowed the export of grain from three Ukrainian ports – Chornomorsk, Odesa, and Yuzhny/Pivdennyi.&nbsp;

No recognition of annexed Ukrainian regions

On October 12, 2022, a resolution was passed by the UN General Assembly with a large majority appealing countries to not recognise the four Ukrainian regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – seized by Russia, after Moscow did not heed to its demand of reversing course on its “attempted illegal annexation”.

India questions UN's efficacy

India, which has continued to abstain from voting on resolutions of the UN's General Assembly, recently raised questions over the efficacy of the international organisation.

Expressing India's concerns, New Delhi’s envoy to the UN Ruchira Kamboj said, “Has the UN system, and particularly its principal organ, the UN Security Council, based on a 1945-world construct, not been rendered ineffective to address contemporary challenges to global peace and security? Are we anywhere near a possible solution acceptable to both sides?”

With major economies dwindling, nuke threats being exchanged and peace not in sight, the Russia-Ukraine war is becoming a serious threat to the world order and the onus of establishing peace and harmony within nation-states is lying on the shoulders of the UN.

A minute's silence for Ukrainian lives lost in one year of the war was interrupted by Russia’s ambassador to the UN as the two countries faced off during the war anniversary at the Security Council's session.

Concluding his speech in the chamber, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called for a minute's silence as a tribute “in memory of the victims of the aggression”.

As the UN members present in the council chamber rose in silence, Russia’s United Nations envoy Vasily Nebenzia continued to remain in his seat and appealed for the floor.

By referring to 2014 and overly emphasising the word ‘all', the envoy referred to claims of Russia that the conflict between the two nations began that year after mass protests drove out Ukraine’s Moscow-friendly president from office.

Responding to the removal of the president, Kremlin seized the Crimean Peninsula and supported the insurgency in the mostly Russian-speaking region of Donbas, which was later annexed by Russia.

Nebenzia said, “All lives are priceless, and that is why we’re rising to honour the memory of them all.” Earlier, the ambassador accused Malta, which holds the rotating presidency of the council, of giving preference to Ukraine by letting it speak first, just because it is “part of your geopolitical project”.

He further raised objections over inclusion of 14 European countries' foreign ministers on the speakers list along with European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, stating that the foreign ministers have the same EU position “and will bring no added value” to the debate.

Responding to the issue raised, Malta’s Foreign Minister Ian Borg said that the European ministers came to New York and requested to speak because “they feel that their countries have been and are still being directly impacted by this war”.

Kuleba, speaking in the council, said that “Ukraine will resist as it has done so far, and Ukraine will win”. He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is going to lose much sooner than he thinks”.&nbsp;
