People smoking cannabis THC vapes in the United Kingdom are at risk from a dangerous "zombie" drug, warn experts.

The warning comes after confiscated products showed traces of Xylazine, a strong sedative capable of taking down big animals like cows and horses.

Recent history of Xylazine

In the US, Xylazine has emerged as an epidemic of sorts, with reports of overdose deaths. The drug was even declared an emerging threat by the White House's Office of National Drug Control Policy. In July 2023, a National Response Plan was released to address the emerging threat of fentanyl mixed with Xylazine.

In the UK, there has been at least one Xylazine-related death. Amid fears that its misuse could grow, experts have warned that it even puts those who inject or take strong drugs at risk.

Researchers from King's College London, as per a BBC report, have found that new types of illicit xylazine products are now entering the UK market.

Their findings have been published in the journal Addiction.

Researchers found traces of the drug in codeine and diazepam, or Valium being sold in the market.

To gather evidence, the team of researchers last year contacted all toxicology laboratories in the UK. They also analysed drug-testing results from hauls seized by law enforcement.

As per BBC, they found Xylazine in only two THC vapes and a small number of illegally sold pills out of tens of thousands of products. However, they pointed out that although small, the findings were concerning.

What Xylazine does to the human body

As per a National Institutes of Health-led study, Xylazine, which is not approved for use in humans, can worsen the life-threatening effects of opioids.

When used in combination with opioids like fentanyl and heroine, "xylazine may damage the ability of the brain to get enough oxygen, which is one of the most dangerous effects of opioid drugs and can lead to death." The drug is known to cause sedation and dangerously slow down breathing and heart rate, and lower blood pressure in humans.

This comes as House speaker and Republican Mike Johnson, on Monday (Apr 8) returned to work amid mounting pressure from some members of his own party who have opposed passing a bill that would send additional aid to Ukraine.

President Joe Biden’s administration has requested a supplemental budget which includes money for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The bill includes $60 billion in military aid for Ukraine but has been stuck in the US House for months.

Blinken, on Tuesday, called this request “urgent,” saying that the US needs to do its part to support Ukraine along with European and other allies.

Ahead of his meeting with Blinken in Washington, Cameron met with former US President Donald Trump, on Monday (Apr 8) at the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s Florida home.

Cameron and Trump discussed the war in Ukraine and the “need for NATO countries to meet their defense spending requirements,” said the Republican frontrunner’s campaign.

The UK foreign secretary has been urging Republicans to approve the aid package, which has particularly angered hard-right members of the GOP, including Marjorie Taylor Greene.

UK's foreign office has been found to be "somewhat elitist and rooted in the past" in a new report that called for the removal of colonial-era paintings in the Whitehall headquarters in London as well as renaming of the department.

The report was authored by a group of former diplomats, ministers, national security advisers, and senior officials.

The report titled, 'The World in 2040: Renewing the UK's Approach to International Affairs', has been released in collaboration with the UCL Policy Lab and Hertford College, Oxford.

"The UK stands today as an 'off-shore' mid-sized power in a rapidly changing world," it acknowledged.

The report was not commissioned by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's administration.

"The very name of the Foreign, Commonwealth (formerly ‘Colonial’) and Development Office (FCDO) is anchored in the past," the report states.

"A new Department for International Affairs (or Global Affairs UK) would signal a potentially quite different role. Former colonies are making increasingly vocal demands around the need for reparations from colonialism and compensation for damage arising from historical industrial emissions. UK has often sought to project an image of ‘greatness’ to the world that today seems anachronistic. We should give space, be more of a 'team-player', showing humility and respect," it states.

London in the past has been accused of carrying a colonial overhang in its ties with a number of capitals that it previously ruled as an exploitative imperialist power.

For countries such as India, vis-a-vis the ties with the UK, the "scars of colonial period are both material and psychological", the country's External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar wrote in his 2024 book 'Why Bharat Matters'.

While the UK "tended to compare itself to France and Germany" in the past, the report said that it has "more in common with G20 nations like Japan and European countries like Norway and Switzerland".

"The balance of geopolitical power is shifting alongside economic power. The world's economic gravity is moving back towards the East driven by growth in China, India and South-East Asia," the report contends.

Also read | Rishi Sunak, the 'proud British', are you sorry for Jallianwala Bagh massacre? Also watch | UK's colonial legacy back in spotlight | World Of Africa × London in the past has been accused of carrying a colonial overhang in its ties with a number of capitals that it previously ruled as an exploitative imperialist power. (With inputs from agencies)

Under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's leadership, the Tories will taste defeat in the upcoming general election, cautioned Suella Braverman, the former UK Home Secretary. Braverman, however, indicated that she would not be launching a leadership bid.

Braverman, who was sacked in November, stated that she has no plans to topple the under-fire government before the country heads to ballot boxes.

Acknowledging her concerns regarding the Tories' polling numbers, she emphasised the uncomfortable reality that the Prime Minister's path was leading towards defeat. Braverman urged the government to take action, emphasising the need to demonstrate seriousness in halting illegal immigration by sea.

The Tories have been planning to oust Sunak, with Commons leader Penny Mordaunt appearing the favourite among Tory MPs to replace him. But other names including Braverman have been rumoured as a possible replacement, especially among those who are more rightwing in the party.

The Conservatives can possibly face a significant defeat in the upcoming election, according to Professor John Curtice, a respected polling expert. He recently forecasted that the Conservatives have only a 1 per cent chance of leading the next government. Recent polls indicate that the Conservative Party holds 20 per cent of the vote, narrowly surpassing Reform UK, linked to Nigel Farage, which stands at 16 per cent. In contrast, Labour maintains a substantial lead with 43 per cent of the vote.

"I'm not thinking about any kind of leadership campaign. Rishi Sunak is our Prime Minister, I fully expect him to lead us into the next general election,” Braverman said.

"I owe that to the people who have sent me to Parliament, and I owe that to you, and so the honest truth is that we are heading for a defeat, to put it mildly, at the general election. I very much hope that we change course and that we improve the offer to the British people. Ultimately, measures on tax cuts, measures on migration, measures on national security and social cohesion are insufficient by this Government."

Braverman was sacked as Home Secretary after a turbulent period in November in which she was accused of inspiring clashes between police and far-right thugs at the Cenotaph following her claim that police forces "play favourites" with protest groups. It also came just weeks after she described rough sleeping as being a "lifestyle choice".

Ultramarathoner Russ Cook, known as “Hardest Geezer,” from Worthing, West Sussex, United Kingdom has become the first person to run the full length of Africa after he crossed the finish line in Tunisia, reported the British media, on Sunday (Apr 7).

Crossing the finish line

The 27-year-old endurance athlete crossed the finish line on Sunday afternoon in Ras Angela, Tunisia, the most northern point of the African continent, nearly a year after he started.

“Can’t believe it’s nearly over. See you at the shell garage soon boys & girls,” he said, in a post on X, hours before he reached his destination. He had planned to celebrate with a party and a strawberry daiquiri.

Cook has not only become the first person to run the full length of Africa but also raised more than £600,000 ($758,280) for charity.

He reportedly finished the race to cheers of “Geezer, Geezer” and was accompanied by his supporters on the final leg of his journey which he had documented on social media. Cook had earlier announced that he would throw a party at the finish line at a hotel in Bizerte, Tunisia.

Initially planning to complete 360 marathons in 240 days, Cook faced several setbacks including visa issues as he crossed 16 African nations, health scares, geopolitical hurdles, and even an armed robbery.

The 27-year-old began his 16,000-kilometre journey, on April 22, 2023, from South Africa’s most southerly point, Cape Agulhas and nearly a year later, he has run the distance of about 376 marathons.

About Project Africa

Cook had sought to raise money for two charities, the Running Charity and Sandblast, through the Project Africa venture.

The Running Charity provides support for young people who are experiencing homelessness or complex needs, and Sandblast, which raises awareness of the Saharawi people.

“How can you be tired when there’s this many people running with you?” he told Sky News, last Tuesday (Apr 2) and said that the challenge had been “the toughest in my life but an immense honour”.

However, Cook is no stranger to challenges. In 2019, he completed 71 marathons in 66 days as he ran from Istanbul to London raising £3,000 ($3,791) for charity. He also broke the world record for the fastest marathon run while pulling a car.

UK: Storm Kathleen havoc | US alert amid Iran 'revenge' threat

A horrifying saga of domestic abuse finally turned deadly when 28-year-old UK man Nicholas Metson killed his 26-year-old wife Holly Bramley by brutally chopping her body into 224 pieces, media reports said.

The killing took place after the husband inflicted a series of cruelties on her before ultimately murdering her and disposing of her remains in plastic bags by tossing them into a river. Metson and his friend Hancock will be sentenced on Monday (Apr 8).

The chilling actions carried out by Metson were part of a trial hearing where it was revealed that he had a history of tormenting animals and had previously punished his wife in gruesome ways.

Reports surfaced of Metson putting their puppy in a washing machine and fatally injuring her hamsters by placing them in a food blender. Even after the escalating abuse, Bramley was "controlled" and "manipulated" by her husband and remained in the relationship, according to sources cited by media outlets.

Media reports citing sources recounted Bramley's confessions of Metson's cruelty, one of which was fleeing to a police station with her pet rabbits in a desperate bid to escape him.
