Russia on Friday (May 3) reacted to UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron's statement about providing British weapons to Ukraine for the military offensive, calling it "dangerous".

Cameron on Thursday pledged over 3 billion pounds ($3.7 billion) of annual military aid for Ukraine, stating that the UK had no objection if Kyiv wanted to use British weapons against its targets in Russia.

"Ukraine has that right. Just as Russia is striking inside Ukraine, you can quite understand why Ukraine feels the need to make sure it's defending itself," Cameron told news agency Reuters during a visit to Kyiv.

Cameron's remarks are quite contrary to that of the United States which has specified that any weapons that it supplies to Ukraine should only be used in its internationally recognised borders than against the targets inside Russia.

Ukraine has said that it uses its own weapons and drones at the time it launches targeted attacks against Russia, aiming at its oil refineries or railway infrastructure.

Kremlin calls Cameron's comments dangerous

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dubbed Cameron's remarks as dangerous.

"This is a direct escalation of tension around the Ukrainian conflict, which could potentially pose a danger to European security, to the entire European security architecture," he said.

"This is where we see such a dangerous trend of escalating tension in official statements. This is a cause for our concern."

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova added: "This is the first time that a Western politician has so frankly acknowledged what has long been a well-known secret for a majority of the world's countries: That the West is waging a covert war against Russia with the hands of Ukrainians."

She said that Moscow would retaliate if Ukraine launched strikes against Russia using British weapons.

"How irresponsible and callous do you have to be not to realise what such statements lead to, especially with regard to countries with nuclear weapons," Zakharova told a briefing.

"We always respond, but how can you not think about the feelings of British subjects and EU citizens."

Russia accuses UK Foreign Secy David Cameron of 'direct escalation' over arms for Ukraine

For three years, doctors assessed a 11-year-old girl with persistent headaches around 30 times before finally diagnosing her with a brain tumour. Tia Gordon, from Northampton, first fell ill during the Covid lockdown in March 2020. Her sickness initially occurred every few months, then increased to monthly, and eventually became a daily ordeal from November 2023 to January 2024.

Despite many consultations, doctors repeatedly missed identifying her tumour, instead attributing her symptoms to migraines and stomach bugs.

Even when she developed new symptoms like a stiff neck, medical professionals dismissed them as issues related to her sleeping posture and referred her to a physiotherapist.

As her condition deteriorated, affecting her balance and ability to walk, she was finally admitted to the hospital. An emergency scan revealed a 3.5cm brain tumour, specifically a pilocytic astrocytoma, the most common type in children. Following a lengthy 10-hour surgery, the benign tumour was successfully removed.

Tia's mother, Imogen Darby, who works as a pharmacy dispenser, mentioned that Tia's glasses prescription was altered four times before the tumour was identified.

Ms Darby said, ''I was told Tia had stomach bugs and migraines. The first thing I was told, because it was the summer, (was that) she just needed to drink more water. After probably a year, she got diagnosed with migraines and they gave her paracetamol for that. She was also given another medication for that and her final diagnosis in January (this year) from paediatrics was migraine with sickness.''

''Over more than three years, I took Tia to doctors, she was refused MRIs, she was refused to be seen by emergency paediatrics, I called 111, I went to A&E, she had her glasses changed four times, she was given medication and she had a consultant, but it took for her to be unable to walk for her to get the care she needed,'' she added.

Following the operation, the young girl is eager to resume her usual routines such as reading and playing dodgeball. However, she will undergo MRI scans every three months for the next five years and is currently undergoing physiotherapy, in addition to regular appointments with neurologists.

According to Cancer Research UK, approximately 175 children receive a diagnosis of astrocytoma annually in the UK.

Cameron Miller, director of external affairs and strategy at the Brain Tumour Charity, said, ''We wish Tia all the best with her continuing treatment and thank Imogen for sharing her story. Sadly, it's one that we often hear. For many brain tumour patients, it simply takes too long to be diagnosed – and this is one of the reasons why we're calling for a National Brain Tumour Strategy.''

Four men have been arrested after half a tonne of cocaine worth more than $50 million (40 million pounds) was found in a van in the car park of a Yorkshire village pub.

What we know about the case

Around 500-kilogramme of cocaine – with an estimated street value of about more than $50 million – was found in the car park of the Stags Head Inn in Lelley in East Yorkshire, England, said the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA).

The government agency also said that it believes that the drugs were brought to shore in a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) after being transferred from a larger vessel off the Hull coast.

The boat was abandoned at Easington Beach, the NCA added. The beach in question is around 29 kilometres away from the pub where the drugs were found in the back of a Vauxhall Vivaro van.

About those arrested

A 22-year-old from Argyll, a 32-year-old from Oban and a 24-year-old from Campbeltown, all in Scotland, and a 39-year-old from Colombia were arrested at 8:30 am (local time) on Saturday (May 4).

“This was a significant amount of cocaine and its seizure will be a sizeable blow to the organised crime group which attempted to smuggle it into the UK,” said senior investigating officer Alan French.

“There’s no doubt these drugs would have been sold into communities around the UK, fuelling further crime and exploitation. Working with our law enforcement partners we are determined to do all we can to disrupt criminal activity, and protect the UK’s border security,” French added.

The senior official also said that an investigation into the case is underway after the arrests. The operation was supported by Humberside Police, the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit and Border Force, said the NCA.

Earlier this year, a shipment of cocaine worth approximately $565 million had been found in a container at Southampton Port carrying bananas from South America. It was the largest-ever seizure of a haul of class-A drugs in the UK and weighed around 5.7 tonnes, according to the NCA.

5-year-old suffers cardiac arrest at UK theme park; mother arrested for negligence

Sadiq Khan was on Saturday (May 4) was re-elected as London's mayor as he secured his third consecutive term defeating Conservative challenger Susan Hall.

Khan's win further helped solidify the Labour Party's overwhelming advantage over the ruling Conservatives in the local elections ahead of the UK's general elections later this year.

His victory was much anticipated despite public outrage over frequent knife attacks in the British capital and the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), under which the drivers of older, relatively more polluting vehicles are charged a daily fee.

"It's been a difficult few months, we faced a campaign of non-stop negativity," Khan said in a speech after the results showed he had won 43.8% of the vote against 33% for the Conservatives' candidate, Susan Hall.

"For the last eight years, London has been swimming against the tide of a Tory (Conservative) government and now with a Labour Party that's ready to govern again under Keir Starmer, it's time for Rishi Sunak to give the public a choice."

One of the campaign promises that Khan's challenger Hall made was to scrap ULEZ. However, the Trump admirer made several gaffes that grabbed the public's attention. She was also accused of racism after the 69-year-old was found engaging with far-right content on social media.

The parents of a young woman who allegedly died after taking AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, Covishield, are planning to file a lawsuit against the British pharmaceutical giant.

Earlier this week, AstraZeneca for the first time ever acknowledged that its COVID vaccine can lead to a rare side effect and can cause blood clots and low platelet count. The admission by the company was made in legal documents submitted to the United Kingdom High Court.

About the potential lawsuit

Venugopalan Govindan, who lost his 20-year-old daughter Karunya in 2021, took to X and in a series of posts said that the admission by the UK-based company was “too late” and came after “so many lives have been lost”.

“The Govt knew that Covishield causes bloodclots and it can be fatal. Serum Institute, the manufacturers, knew it. In February 2021 itself. (SII knew it in February, and it was dutybound to inform GoI ),” said Govindan, in a post on Friday (May 3).

‘Safety first’

As the news about AstraZeneca’s admission sparked debate across the country, Bharat Biotech, the vaccine maker that developed Covaxin, boasted about its safety record.

“Covaxin was developed with a single-minded focus on safety first, followed by efficacy,” said Bharat Biotech, in a post on X.

The Hyderabad-based biotechnology company said that their vaccine was also the only COVID-19 vaccine in the Indian government’s immunisation programme to have conducted efficacy trials in India.

“Covaxin was evaluated in more than 27,000 subjects as part of its licensure process. It was licensed under restricted use in clinical trial mode, where detailed safety reporting was carried out for several hundred thousand subjects,” it said.

The company also said that the safety of Covaxin was evaluated by the Ministry of Health, Government of India and the studies and follow-up activities demonstrated its “excellent safety record”.

Bharat Biotech said there were no reports of blood clots, Thrombocytopenia, TTS, VITT pericarditis, myocarditis, etc.

“As seasoned innovators and product developers, the Bharat Biotech team was well aware that, while the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines may be short-lived, the impact on patient safety could last a lifetime. Hence, safety is the primary focus for all our vaccines," it added.

Britain on Friday imposed sanctions on two "extremist" groups and four individuals in Israel who it blamed for violence in the West Bank, its latest package of measures against Israeli settlers.

Britain's Foreign Office named Hilltop Youth and Lehava as two groups which it said were known to have supported, incited and promoted violence against Palestinian communities in the West Bank.

The four individuals sanctioned were responsible for human rights abuses against these communities, the statement added.

Among them are Noam Federman, who has trained settler groups in committing violence and Elisha Yered, who has justified killing Palestinians on religious grounds.

Violence in the West Bank was already on the rise before Israel's assault on Gaza, which was triggered by an October 7 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel.

It has escalated since, with stepped-up Israeli military raids, settler violence and Palestinian street attacks.
