The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) released industry data on Thursday revealing that automobile production in Britain experienced a decline for the fifth month in a row during July. This downturn was attributed to manufacturers transitioning to new vehicle models and temporary disruptions within the supply chain.

In July, the total number of automobiles that came off production lines amounted to 65,478 units. This figure represents a 14.4 per cent decrease compared to the same month in the previous year.

The production of electrified vehicles, a category that encompasses fully electric models, plug-in hybrids, and full hybrids, made up 37.5 per cent of the overall output. This proportion shows a slight decrease from the 39.5 per cent share recorded in the same period last year.

Mike Hawes, the chief executive of SMMT, provided insight into the situation, stating in an official release, "We anticipate a continued level of fluctuation as the industry undergoes restructuring to shift towards zero-emission vehicle production."

Despite these challenges, the automotive sector in the UK has seen some positive developments. Major automakers Nissan and Tata Motors have recently announced substantial investments, amounting to billions of pounds, aimed at boosting electric vehicle (EV) production at their UK-based facilities. These investments are seen as a significant boost to foreign investment in the country and align with the industry's push towards achieving net-zero emissions.

However, the broader context of the automotive industry presents some challenges. The rising costs of living and manufacturing have had an impact on both the sales and production of electric vehicles. This situation has prompted several global automotive giants, including Ford, General Motors, and Mercedes, to reconsider and scale back their initially ambitious plans for EV expansion.

Looking at the broader picture for 2024, the SMMT reported that UK car production has actually seen an increase of 14.8 per cent year-to-date, with a total of 118,672 units manufactured. This figure suggests that despite the recent monthly declines, the overall trend for the year remains positive.

This complex situation reflects the ongoing transformation within the automotive industry, balancing the push towards electrification with economic realities and production challenges. The data highlights the delicate balance manufacturers must strike between investing in future technologies and managing current market demands and operational constraints.

The Keir Starmer-led UK government is contemplating stricter rules on outdoor smoking as part of an effort to eliminate tobacco use. These new rules might include banning smoking in places like pub gardens, outdoor dining areas, near hospitals and sports venues, as reported by BBC.

These new restrictions are expected to be a more stringent version of the previous government's Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which was shelved before the last election.

The King's Speech during the recent state opening of Parliament hinted at reviving this legislation, which would have prohibited tobacco sales to anyone born on or after January 2009.

It is uncertain if the outdoor smoking ban, as reported by the Sun, would be implemented across the entire UK or just in England. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care told the BBC, "Smoking claims 80,000 lives a year, puts huge pressure on our NHS, and costs taxpayers billions. We are determined to protect children and non-smokers from the harms of second-hand smoking."

How did the opposition react to this news?

On the other hand, the Conservative opposition, including potential leadership candidates, have criticised these proposals as excessive regulation. Former home office minister Robert Jenrick voiced his concern on social media, stating, "The last thing this country needs is thousands more pubs closing."

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, also condemned the proposals, calling them "government overreach on a scale that is utterly ridiculous." He warned that such measures could spell the end of pubs. "Frankly, if they do this, it will be the death knell of the pub," he told BBC.

Smoking was responsible for an estimated 74,600 deaths in 2019, according to the most recent data from NHS England. In 2022-23, there were 408,700 hospital admissions in England related to smoking.

What were Rishi Sunak's plans for a smoke-free generation?

During his time as prime minister, Rishi Sunak outlined plans to create a "smoke-free generation" and decrease smoking-related deaths. However, his Tobacco and Vapes Bill was abandoned after he called a general election in May. If passed, it would have made it illegal to sell tobacco to anyone born after 1 January 2009.

An investigation has been launched into the causes of a huge fire that engulfed a block of flats in east London on Monday morning. The London Fire Brigade, with more than 200 firefighters, responded to the major fire incident. Two people have already been taken to the hospital, and more than 100 were evacuated from the block of flats in East London.

The search operation is still continuing at the mixed-use building located on Freshwater Road, Dagenham.

Thick black smoke was released from the building amid leaping flames. People living nearby were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, said LFB.

London Fire Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne said, “The building has several fire safety issues known to London Fire Brigade.”

A “simultaneous” evacuation of the building was carried out “immediately,” and a “significant” search and rescue operation is still underway, he further added.

The London Fire Brigade received the call for rescue at 02:44 local time (01:44 GMT).

The whole building was damaged by the fire, including the scaffolding surrounding the property and even the roof. The first fire crew arrived at the location within five minutes, and the second crew arrived in six minutes.

The aerial appliance was brought to the location in six minutes, involving almost 225 firefighters.

Station Commander Alan Bendell, who was at the scene, said, “Two of the brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders are being used at the scene as aerial water towers to assist with tackling the fire from height.”

Ambulances were present to assist, and the LAS also mentioned that an air ambulance was dispatched.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper gave her regards to the firefighters and other emergency workers for their bravery and swift response to the fire.

Crews from Dagenham, Ilford, Romford, Barking, and local fire stations were at the location.

In the United Kingdom, more than 700 people have posted about a pro-suicide website to find a partner to end their life with. The site reportedly has a member section, where people can choose their partner to die with.

The various suicidal threads were discovered by the BBC.

It is also believed that predators are targeting emotionally weak women and exploiting their vulnerabilities.

In December 2019, Angela Stevens’ 28-year-old son named Bratt flew from his home to the mainland of Scotland to be with the woman he contacted on the partner’s thread.

They booked a place on Airbnb and committed suicide.

“I miss everything about Brett, his smile, his infectious laugh,” Angela says.

Angela, after losing her beloved son, dedicated most of her life to looking for pro-suicide sites, specifically partner threads. “It’s a very dangerous place,” says Angela.

Angela states these sites as the dark version of dating apps. “Where else would you go to find a partner to take your own life with?” she says. “It’s just absolutely vile,” Angela added.

These sites influence users to take their own lives and also provide features where they instruct how to commit suicide.

According to the BBC, 130 British people have used this website to take their own lives.

Members are suggested to post their credentials, including the method for their suicide, in order to search for a partner.

Helen Kite’s sister, Linda, a victim of this suicidal site, found a man who was willing to die with her. Linda texted, "I am 54F [female], based near London. I can travel and could pay for a hotel if that suited. Obviously, would be good to chat first.”

They checked into a Romford hotel in East London and took their lives after consuming toxic chemicals on 1 July 2023.

Kite said, “Linda was found lying next to the body of a total stranger. It’s the platform that preys on desperate souls.”

Kite believes, “Every day, innocent victims seeking support are snared by the forum, unimpeded by the authorities.”

The worst was yet to come in Helen’s life. In September 2023, Helen’s other sister, Sarah, took a similar step as Linda by going to the same platform and consuming the same toxic chemical, as she could not bear the grief of losing her.

Encouraging Murder

The further disturbing aspect of this site was observed when predators specifically looked for vulnerable young girls.

In 2022, in Glasgow, a case came to light involving 31-year-old Craig McNally, who volunteered to be the partner of a young woman looking for someone to die with.

He lured the emotionally weak 25-year-old woman to visit his flat to practice suicide.

McNally then repeatedly choked her to death.

McNally was arrested from his home. After a proper investigation, it was found he had tried a similar tactic with a woman named Roberta Barbos, a 22-year-old student.

Barbos refused to meet him but later took her own life in February 2020.

“It’s like something from a horror movie, from another world,” said Roberta’s mother, Maria Barbos. “I couldn’t believe that a website like this would even exist. They’re sick minds.”

'Dark version of dating apps': People in Britain search for suicide partners

Divers returned to the sea off Sicily Friday in search of UK tycoon Mike Lynch's teenage daughter, the last person missing after his family's luxury yacht sank, killing the businessman and five others.

Italy's fire service said dives resumed in the early hours, continuing days of complex operations to recover bodies after the superyacht sank during a sudden storm before dawn on Monday.

"The long and delicate search operations for the last missing person continue," the service said on social media Friday.

Lynch, a celebrated tech entrepreneur and investor, had invited friends and family onto the sailing boat Bayesian to celebrate his recent acquittal in a massive US fraud case.

But as the 56-metre (185-feet) British-flagged yacht was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo, it was struck by a waterspout -- akin to a mini-tornado.

It sank within minutes.

Heartbroken

Fifteen people were rescued, but one body, believed to be of the yacht's chef, was found a few hours later.

Six people, including Lynch and his daughter Hannah, were reportedly missing.

The 18-year-old had just finished her end of school exams and had a place to study English literature at Oxford University, according to UK media reports.

Friends of the teenager said she was kind and clever, as well as a staunch feminist, according to The Times newspaper.

Italian authorities launched a major search operation involving specialist divers, boats from several emergency services and helicopters.

The bodies of Lynch's lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, were recovered on Wednesday.

Lynch's body was pulled up a day later.

Movillo's firm Clifford Chance paid tribute to the lawyer and his wife, saying all were "heartbroken at the tragic passing... and still coming to terms with this terrible loss".

The Bloomer family described their "unimaginable grief", saying Jonathan and Judy had been together for five decades.

"Our only comfort is that they are still together now," the family said.

Many questions remain about why the yacht sank, and so quickly, when other boats nearby were unaffected.

On Thursday the head of the company which built the boat said the tragedy could have been avoided.

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," said Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which includes the Perini Navi company that built Bayesian in 2008.

Bad weather forecast

He told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed.

"Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice in a trap," he said.

Lynch, 59, was acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The Bayesian, owned by his family, boasted a 75-metre mast, the tallest aluminium sailing mast in the world, according to the Charter World website.

Raising it would likely cost some 15 million euros and take "six to eight weeks", according to the salvage engineer who led the operation to recover the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which sank off Italy in 2012.

To recover the yacht, the mast could be removed on the seabed but the boat would be lifted up whole using a giant crane and a team of 40 specialist divers, South African Nick Sloane told the Repubblica daily.

Sicily divers look for UK tech tycoon's daughter after superyacht sinking

The police are looking for the two dogs responsible for killing a man who was discovered dead back of a home in Birmingham.

The 33-year-old man, who was taking care of his brother’s pet dogs, was found dead at the back garden of a home in Rubery on Wednesday.

Through postmortem records, it was observed that the cause of the man’s death could be due to a dog attack, as asserted by the police.

Police said two dogs have already been captured, but they are still looking for the American bulldogs, which are not considered a banned breed.

Inspector Leanne Chapman, of the West Midlands police dog unit, said: “We have officers liaising with vets and the local authority, and are using our drone capability to scour the wider area.”

“We really need to hear from anyone who has seen these dogs, and it’s vital that if you see them, you don’t approach them but call 999 immediately. Similarly, if you or someone you know has taken the dogs in after finding them loose, we need you to call us as soon as possible,” Chapman added.

Action taken by police

Police have released the image of one of the dogs they are searching for, which is brown with white marks on its body, while the other is said to be a black dog.

Understanding the seriousness of the situation, the police are visiting houses for inquiries, scanning CCTV recordings, and even using the help of a dog specialist officer and a drone to find the deadly dogs.

“This is a really tragic incident, and the family of the man is being supported by officers. The investigation into his death is continuing, and our priority right now is finding the other dogs that we believe may have been involved,” said Supt Sally Simpson of Birmingham police.

If the authorities determine that the dogs were the reason for the man’s death, it would be the seventh fatality from a dog attack in a single year in the UK.

The police are looking for the two dogs responsible for killing a man who was discovered dead back of a home in Birmingham. The 33-year-old man, who was taking care of his brother’s pet dogs, was found dead at the back garden of a home in Rubery on Wednesday.

Police said two dogs have already been captured, but they are still looking for the American bulldogs, which are not considered a banned breed. Inspector Leanne Chapman, of the West Midlands police dog unit, said: “We have officers liaising with vets and the local authority, and are using our drone capability to scour the wider area.” Also Read: Three-year-old mauled by XL Bully in UK after government banned the breed “We really need to hear from anyone who has seen these dogs, and it’s vital that if you see them, you don’t approach them but call 999 immediately. A new report has revealed a disturbing trend in England and Wales. On Monday (August 19), Britain's Children Commissioner in a damning report revealed that police in England and Wales strip search a child every 19 hours. These strip search disproportionately target Black children, it found.

Why strip-search children?

The issue came into the spotlight in 2022 after the case of a 15-year-old, only identified as "Child Q," made headlines. Child Q, a Black girl, was strip-searched by London Police in 2020 while menstruating because teachers at her school believed she smelled of cannabis.

The strip search yielded no drugs. However, the incident sparked widespread outrage and raised questions about police conduct.

Following this, the nation's Children Commissioner, entrusted with protecting children, conducted an investigation. The investigation found that between July 2022 and June 2023, the British police conducted 457 strip searches on children — equivalent to one every 19 hours.

Most of these searches — permitted under strict conditions — were related to suspected drug offences. Yet, half of them resulted in no further action being taken.

Statutory Codes not followed

The investigation found that at least four per cent of the strip searches conducted between January 2018 and June 2023 were not compliant with statutory codes of practice. A further 11 per cent of them were flagged as cause for concern.

While the guidelines prescribe that such strip searches cannot be conducted in public view, at least 50 of the 457 strip searches between July 2022 and June 2023 were carried out in a public setting.

In a statement, Children's Commissioner Rachel de Souza said, "A much higher threshold should be met before a child is subjected to a humiliating and traumatising search that exposes intimate parts."

As per the report, during the same period, black children were four times more likely to be subjected to such searches.

While the report does not analyse the reason for this, it cites previously published broader inquiries to highlight "substantial ethnic disparities" in the criminal justice system.

As disturbing as the figure is, the disproportionate targeting of black children is actually down from the six times over the previous four years. Moreover, the number of children subjected to strip searches has shown a slight decline. Previous data showed that between 2018 and 2023, such searches were carried out at roughly one every 14 hours. De Souza notes that there were signs police were recording details more accurately.

The UK government under its new plans to combat radicalisation will treat extreme misogyny as terrorism, according to multiple media reports.

The Labour government intends to tackle violence against women and girls in the same way as "Islamist and far-Right extremism". Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has ordered a review of the counter-terrorism strategy to address the issue as the current guidance might be too narrow in its outlook.

"For too long, governments have failed to address the rise in extremism, both online and on our streets, and we’ve seen the number of young people radicalised online grow. Hateful incitement of all kinds fractures and frays the very fabric of our communities and our democracy,” Cooper was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

“Action against extremism has been badly hollowed out in recent years, just when it should have been needed most," she added.

According to the Labour MP, the review would help "identify gaps" in the existing policy that need to be addressed to punish those using harmful and hateful beliefs.

The report revealed that two million women in the UK are estimated to be victims if violence, perpetrated by men each year.

"We estimate that at least one in every 12 women will be a victim of VAWG every year (two million victims) and one in 20 adults in England and Wales will be a perpetrator of VAWG every year (2.3 million perpetrators). These are cautious estimates as we know much crime goes unreported and in policing we often only see the tip of the iceberg," the report noted.

The report and police chiefs also warned of young men being “radicalised” online by influencers such as Andrew Tate.

Around 14,000 people in the United Kingdom have applied for government compensation, claiming they were harmed by COVID-19 vaccines, according to a recent report by local media. The report highlights that some people have already received payments for serious conditions like strokes, heart attacks, dangerous blood clots, inflammation of the spinal cord, severe swelling in the vaccinated arm, and even facial paralysis.

Authorities in the United Kingdom have charged the first adult with rioting in connection with the recent nationwide anti-immigration protests which turned violent. Crown Prosecution Service said 32-year-old Kieran Usher wouldn’t be the only individual to be charged with the crime that carries a maximum of 10 years in jail, double that of violent disorder.

Earlier on Friday (Aug 16), the Hull Crown Court sentenced two men to jail for “racist violence”. A 25-year-old named John Honey was jailed for four years and eight months after pleading guilty to violent disorder, committing racially aggravated criminal damage during an incident involving a BMW, as well as damaging nine other cars.
