Voters head to the polls on Thursday in two closely watched UK by-elections that risk renewing pressure on beleaguered Prime Minister Boris Johnson following months of scandals and setbacks.

His ruling Conservatives are tipped to lose both contests, for the parliamentary seats of Tiverton and Honiton in southwest England and Wakefield in the north, after both Tory MPs resigned in disgrace.

Tiverton and Honiton's MP Neil Parish quit after admitting watching pornography on his phone in the House of Commons, while Wakefield's Imran Ahmad Khan was jailed for sexually assaulting a teenage boy.

The votes come just weeks after Johnson narrowly survived an attempt by his own lawmakers to oust him as party leader and prime minister.

The June 6 vote among Conservative MPs saw more than 40 per cent of the parliamentary party desert him, leaving him severely weakened and struggling to reset his turbulent tenure in power.

Johnson has spent months fighting for his survival after a series of controversies including the "Partygate" saga led many Tories to question whether he should remain as leader.

Various opinion polls have shown the public think he lied about Covid lockdown-breaking events at Downing Street and should resign.

Even before the controversy erupted last December, the 58-year-old Brexit architect saw the loss of two once-safe seats in by-elections last year.

He then scored dismally in May's local elections.

Defeat in the true blue Tory heartland of Tiverton and Honiton, and in Wakefield, which Johnson snatched in 2019 from the main opposition Labour party for the first time since the 1930s, could see his position challenged again.

Madness

Parish, who described his actions as an indefensible moment of "total madness", won a more than 24,000 majority in Tiverton and Honiton in 2019.

The polls come with Britain gripped by 40-year highs in inflation and a cost-of-living crisis that has seen prices soar for everyday essential such as energy, petrol and food.

Strikes this week by railway workers -- some of the biggest seen in Britain in decades -- have added to the sense of crisis.

Some in Wakefield said they expected that to weigh as heavily on voters' minds as the Downing Street parties saga.

"I think people will be affected by 'Partygate'," said David, a retired medical consultant.

"But I think the main thing we're going to be affected by is being hit by the inflation and the rising cost of living from the point of view of heating, energy and the knock-on effect on food prices and transport."

Labour leader Keir Starmer, a sober-minded former lawyer who has been trying to rebuild the centre-left party after the shattering 2019 defeat, has been criticised for failing to connect with voters, particularly in its former heartlands.

UK Inflation hits 9.1%, the highest in the last 40 years. This comes as food and energy prices continue to surge at a rapid speed. How is it impacting the lives of citizens? Laura Makin brings us this report with Olly Barrat.

Ukraine war driving inflation across the United Kingdom

Soaring food prices pushed British consumer price inflation to a 40-year high of 9.1% last month, the highest rate out of the Group of Seven countries and one which underlines the severity of the country's cost-of-living crunch.

The reading was up from 9.0% in April and matched the consensus of a Reuters poll of economists. Records from the Office for National Statistics show May's inflation was the highest since March 1982 - and worse is likely to come.

Sterling, one of the weakest currencies against the U.S. dollar this year, fell below $1.22, down 0.6% on the day, before later recovering.

Some investors judge Britain to be at risk of both persistently high inflation and recession, reflecting its large, imported energy bill and ongoing Brexit-related friction which could further hurt trade ties with the European Union.

"With the economic outlook so unclear, no one knows how high inflation could go, and how long it will continue for - making fiscal and monetary policy judgements particularly tough," said Jack Leslie, senior economist at the Resolution Foundation think tank.

Earlier on Wednesday the Resolution Foundation said the cost-of-living hit for households was being compounded by Brexit, with damaging long-term implications for productivity and wages. read more

Average pay is not keeping up with inflation and trade unions have warned of widespread strikes in the coming months. Railway staff have already staged mass walkouts this week.

Britain's headline inflation rate in May was higher than in the United States, France, Germany and Italy. While Japan and Canada have yet to report consumer price data for May, neither are likely to come close.

The Bank of England said last week that inflation was likely to remain above 9% over the coming months before peaking at slightly above 11% in October, when regulated household energy bills are due to rise again.

Financial markets show interest rates in Britain are on course to rise above 3% around the turn of the year from 1.25% now, although most economists think waning economic growth means the BoE will raise rates by less than that.

Finance minister Rishi Sunak said after the data that the British government was doing all it could to combat a surge in prices and the central bank would act "forcefully" to contain inflation.

Prices for food and non-alcoholic drinks rose by 8.7% in annual terms in May - the biggest jump since March 2009 and making this category the biggest driver of annual inflation last month.

Annual core inflation - which strips out food and energy prices to give an idea of domestically generated cost pressure - fell for the first time since September to 5.9% from 6.2%, a lower-than-expected reading.

"The Bank of England may indeed gain some hope from the fact that core price pressures are subsiding (but) we doubt this ... will be enough to avert further rate rises in the coming months," said Sandra Horsfield, an economist from Investec.

Overall consumer prices rose by 0.7% in monthly terms in May, the ONS said, a little more than the 0.6% consensus.

Costs paid by British factories for materials and energy - a key determinant of prices later paid by consumers in shops - were 22.1% higher in May than a year earlier, the biggest increase since these records began in 1985, the ONS said.

In what can be called a miracle, a rabbit, who had got trapped in the grille of a car on getting hit by the driver, has survived a perilous journey of over 30 miles, media reports said. The incident happened in Wales on last Tuesday. The 46-year-old driver, Mark Pearson, was driving from Pwllheli to Bangor. On the outskirts of Nefyn, Pearson heard a loud “thump”. After hearing the noise, Pearson checked the rear-view mirror but as he could not find anything, he carried on driving to work. After some hours, a colleague informed Pearson that a rabbit was stuck in his bumper.

On Facebook, Pearson, who is from Pwllheli, posted that he feared that he would find “half a rabbit”. “I was surprised to find this lucky fella had gone through the grille and got trapped in an enclosed compartment. We really couldn’t figure out how it got in there until we realised the grill was snapped so it’s hit it, gone through it and the plastic has gone back into place. Islamabad had planned to list Gobinda Patnaik Duggivalasa at the United Nations Security Council's 1267 committee, claiming he was involved in terror attacks in the country.

Countries that supported the Indian bid are the UK, US, France, and Albania. Three of the counties are permanent member of the security council, while Albania is the President of the Council for this month. In 2020 as well the same name was rejected by 5 members of the committee. Pakistan's attempt to list him again is seen as wasting the time of the United Nations Security Council. Indian envoy to UN T.S. Tirumurti had that time termed it as, "Pakistan's blatant attempt to politicise 1267 special procedure on terrorism by giving it a religious colour."

The development comes even as last week, China had put a hold on the UN listing of Lashkar-e-Tayyiba's 2nd command Abdul Rehman Makki. While China's hold lasts for 6-month, Pakistan's attempt to again list the Indian national has been rejected by all members of the UNSC.

The proposal was jointly given by India and US on 1st June and circulated to the members of the United Nations Security Council 1267 committee also known as UN Security Council’s Al-Qaeda (Dae’sh) and ISIL Sanctions Committee. 16th was the last before which any objection could be raised to which China had put a hold.

Makki has a reward of $2 million on him by US Govt and both Washington & Delhi have listed him as a terrorist under domestic laws. He is 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed's Brother-in-law & close to al-Qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahiri & Taliban leadership.

The development is seen as China's support to Pakistan at the UN, a nexus seen in other multilateral organisations.

Thousands of luggage bags stranded outside UK’s busiest airport due to malfunction

A man, who seems to have been addicted to Pepsi, claimed to have been drinking around 30 cans per day for 20 years. The man, who is a supermarket worker in the United Kingdom, seems to have spent around $8,500 a year over the drink. He said that he has finally given up the habit with the help of hypnotherapy. Andy Currie, who is 41-year-old now, used to drink a litre of the drink in the morning and around nine litres more in the day, as per Newsweek.

Since developing the addiction in his 20s, the man has taken around 219,000 cans of fizzy drink. So, he sipped almost 8,000 kg of sugar through Pepsi. Currie said, “I've always loved the taste of a cold Pepsi. Nothing could beat it and I just got hooked. I work nights, so I always liked the sugar rush to keep me going. I'd go through four or five two-litre bottles of Pepsi every day. Because I work at Tesco, I could just buy it straight after work and take it home."

Not just this, the man seems to have spent around $25 daily on Pepsi. It amounts to around $8,500 per year, as per the outlet. After the man’s body weight reached 266 pounds, he realised that it was time to keep a check on the habit. The doctors also warned him as he was at risk of developing diabetes. Now, he has managed to lose 28 pounds with exercise and diet.

He also took the help of a therapist and hypnotist David Kilmurry in London. Kilmurry said Currie had Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). In one session, he felt great and started drinking water instead of Pepsi.

In a month, he lost another 14 pounds, as per Newsweek. Currie claimed, “I haven't touched them (Pepsi cans) in a month and don't plan to. I prefer water now. My wife Sarah says my skin looks better and I've got so much more energy.” "This was by far the worst sugar addiction I've ever heard of,” Kilmurry added.
