U.S. media group&nbspComcast&nbspsubmitted a 22 billion pound($30.7 billion) bid for Sky on Wednesday, prompting the European pay TV group to drop its support for a lower offer from Rupert Murdoch's Twenty-First Century Fox.

On Wednesday, Sky also welcomed commitments the U.S. cable giant had made to address potential public-interest concerns over Sky News, its influential 24-hour news channel.

"As a result of the announcement of this higher cash offer, the Independent Committee is withdrawing its recommendation of the offer announced by 21CF on 15 December 2016 and is now terminating the co-operation agreement entered into with 21CF on the same date," Sky said in a statement.

PJT Partners is the lead advisor for Sky.

Comcast&nbspChairman and Chief Executive Brian Roberts said Sky withdrawing its recommendation was what it wanted to achieve by formalising its offer on Wednesday.

"The board confirming they are going to focus on the shareholders, that's the perfect step as far as we are concerned today," he told reporters.

Sky is chaired by Murdoch's son James, who played a key role in building the company into a major European broadcaster with operations in Germany, Austria and Italy as well as Britain.

Sky formed a committee of independent directors to consider the bids, given James Murdoch's role as chief executive of Fox.

Sky shares were up 3.8 percent at 13.57 pounds by 1434 GMT - well above the offer price, implying that some shareholders anticipated a bidding war.&nbspComcast&nbspshares were 3.9 percent higher, while Fox's rose 2 percent and Disney gained 1.5 percent.

Morningstar analyst Allan Nichols said&nbspComcast's offer fully valued Sky, and any increase would be negative for&nbspComcast, Disney or Fox shareholders. That would likely keep a lid on a bidding war, he wrote in a research note.

Hedge fund Elliott has taken a stake of almost 3 percent in Sky, according to its latest filing, and other shareholders have also argued that Disney's agreement to buy Fox implies a higher value for Sky.

Little known in Europe, Philadelphia-based&nbspComcast&nbspis the biggest U.S. cable operator, owning broadcasters NBC, CNBC and MSNBC. It also owns movie studio Universal Pictures, home to "Minions" and "Jason Bourne" movies and some theme parks.

It said it had formalised its offer to coincide with its own results, giving it an opportunity to explain to investors the merits of the bid.

Its quarterly earnings topped Wall Street expectations on Wednesday. Its shares had fallen 14 percent since it proposed its bid in February.

Roberts said&nbspComcast&nbsphad been built through bold investments since it was founded by his father in 1963.

"When you see opportunities that won't come around again -- unique opportunities -- you have to consider that with extra focus," he said. "Sky will be our platform for growth across Europe."

He said&nbspComcast&nbspwas continuing to work with the European Commission on the regulatory process, and he did not believe a British investigation would be required.

"We believe in the importance of news and the integrity that underpins it (and) we have a proven track record of stewardship and investment," he said.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has proposed installation of a chip in new television set-top boxes which will provide data about channels watched and their duration. A senior official of the ministry said the move is aimed to get “more authentic” viewership figures for every channel.&nbsp;

“This would help advertisers and the DAVP to spend their advertising expenditure wisely. Only those channels which are widely watched will get promoted,” the official added. The Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) is the nodal agency of the government for advertising by various ministries and its organisations. In the proposal, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has told the TRAI, “It is also proposed to ask DTH operators to install a chip in the new set-top boxes which can give data about channels watched and their duration.”

The proposal was part of the ministry’s response to a number of recommendations made by the TRAI on issues related to new direct-to-home licenses. The official said the ministry also “feels that Doordarshan viewership is under-reported” and if the chip is installed, it would give the real viewership figures of the channel. The move is seen to end the monopoly of the Broadcast Audience Research Council India (BARC), which measures the television audience preferences in the country. The ministry official alleged that the BARC is “almost like a monopoly and there is no alternative” and it “does not reveal how they arrive at the viewership figures, the methodology they apply and the area of the survey”. The official said the ministry discussed the possibility of procuring about 300 people meter and randomly installing them to verify the veracity of BARC data, but 300 meters were a too small number to meaningfully compare and verify data. He said the BARC measures viewership by installing 30,000 people meter, which are soldered to the TV’s mother board. The official said nobody would allow such thing to be done on their television sets and thus there were concerned about the genuineness of the assessment done by volunteers. The BARC, however, refuted the accusations.

“We are a joint industry body that was set up in close consultation with all stakeholders, including government representatives and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Our data collection and reporting methodology were arrived at post these consultations and consensus. TRAI is telecom and broadcasting sector watchdog. “Guided by the goals of transparency, the detailed methodology has always been available on our website,” BARC India spokesperson said. He said the BARC operates within the regulatory framework as mandated by the ministry’s guidelines. “We also meet regularly with officials of ministry and TRAI to brief them and provide status report on our operations.

Social media was in a frenzy after it emerged that Sarna, who was one of the special guests at the event on Thursday evening to mark the launch of socialite Suhel Seth&#39;s new book, was also present at the event when the business tycoon arrived. 
 
As television news channels showed pictures of Sarna and Mallya in the hall where the event was held, questions were raised over the presence of the high commissioner at an event where a personality wanted by enforcement agencies in India was also present. 
 
While Suhel Seth contended that it was an open event at the LSE, where anyone could come because of the open invitation, Mallya was not invited to the high commission reception nor was he present. 
 
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also got into the act when it issued a statement, saying Sarna left the event without waiting for the interactive session after he spotted Mallya.

'Glee' star Mark Salling indicted on federal child porn charges

Actor Michael Jace, best known for his role as a policeman on the TV drama &quot;The Shield,&quot; was convicted by a jury on Tuesday of second-degree murder for fatally shooting his wife in 2014 in front of the couple&#39;s two children at their Los Angeles home. 
 
Jace, 53, faces a sentence of 40 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on June 10. 
 
The actor was upset that his wife, April Jace, wanted a divorce when he shot her once in the back and twice more in the legs on May 19, 2014, the Los Angeles County District Attorney`s Office said in a statement. 
 
He then called authorities and reported that he had shot his wife, prosecutors said. The couple`s sons, ages 8 and 5 at the time, watched the killing in the family`s South Los Angeles home, prosecutors said. She was 40 years old when she was slain. 
 
Prosecutors had asked jurors to find Jace guilty of first-degree murder, which involves premeditation, Los Angeles County District Attorney`s Office spokesman Greg Risling said. But the jury in Los Angeles Superior Court instead found Jace guilty of second-degree murder, an intentional killing that was not premeditated.&nbsp; 
 
Jace`s attorneys acknowledged in court that he shot his wife.&nbsp; 
 
&quot;Our entire goal was to show this was not a case of premeditation, and we achieved that goal,&quot; Jace`s attorney, Jamon Hicks, said in an email. &quot;This was a very smart and intelligent jury who deliberated and considered the evidence. They were not just moved by emotion but by the evidence.&quot; 
 
The jury of six women and six men began deliberations late on Friday and resumed on Tuesday morning, spending two hours considering the case before reaching the verdict, prosecutors said.&nbsp; 
 
The jury found Jace used a handgun in the crime, a special circumstance that increases his minimum prison time by 25 years beyond the minimum term for second-degree murder, Risling said.
