US: Donald Trump loses bid to delay hush money trial pending gag order appeal

Allen Weisselberg, former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Trump Organization, was sentenced to five months in jail on Wednesday (Apr 10) after he pleaded guilty last month to lying to investigators and a judge about ex-US president Donald Trump’s finances.

Judge Laurie Peterson issued the ruling in a Manhattan criminal court, in line with the March 4 hearing where she said she would punish Weisselberg.

Following the judgment, court staff led the ex-CFO out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

Second time in jail

This will be Weisselberg’s second stint behind the bars. The Trump loyalist, 76, earlier spent three months in New York's Rikers Island jail for allegedly participating in a 15-year tax fraud scheme at the Trump Organization.

Weisselberg’s case is related to Trump’s civil fraud case, brought by New York state Attorney General Letitia James.

Trump's 2015 and 2016 financial statements valued the Trump's Manhattan townhouse at $327 million based on its stated size of more than 30,000 square feet, nearly three times the actual size.

During a testimony, Weisselberg on October 10 had claimed that he had nothing to do with the incorrect valuation of the unit.

False testimonies

However, as per claims by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office, the ex-CFO’s emails suggested otherwise, that he was indeed paying close attention.

The loyalist also admitted to having lied about Trump’s financial statements during two earlier depositions with James' office.

In 2020, he falsely claimed that he “didn’t find out about the error” in the penthouse size until the media pointed it out.

The civil fraud case culminated in a $454 million penalty imposed on Trump. The judge also imposed a fine worth $1.1 million, including interest, on the former executive.

The charges that Weisselberg pleaded guilty to were centred around the false testimonies that he gave back in 2020. The charges related to the last year’s testimonies were dropped as part of his plea deal.

Trump won't endorse abortion ban | US warns China over imports

Goldman Sachs Group has warned that the implementation of steep tariffs on Chinese imports proposed by former President Donald Trump, could hamper the growth of the US economy and lead to a surge in inflation.

According to a Bloomberg report, the investment bank's analysts outlined that every percentage point increase in the effective tariff rate could possibly reduce US growth by up to 0.15 per cent, particularly if China responds with retaliatory measures.

Even if the resulting revenue from tariffs is utilised to finance tax cuts, leading to increased spending and investment, the impact on gross domestic product (GDP) would still be huge, with a projected minimum decline of 0.05 per cent.

Goldman Sachs’s analysis suggests that a major escalation in tariffs could elevate core consumer prices by just over 0.1 per cent.

This increase arises from the likelihood of firms passing on the higher costs of imports to consumers, alongside opportunistic price adjustments by domestic producers.

As a result, heightened tariffs could lead to a temporary surge in inflation lasting for approximately a year, posing additional challenges for policymakers tasked with maintaining price stability and economic growth.

Former President Trump's tenure was marked by an aggressive stance towards trade with China, with the imposition of tariffs on over $300 billion worth of Chinese imports.

This move triggered retaliatory measures from Beijing, contributing to growing trade tensions between the two economic powerhouses.

While President Joe Biden has largely maintained these tariffs, Trump has indicated intentions to further escalate trade measures if re-elected in November's presidential vote, proposing an increase in China tariffs to at least 60 per cent.

Goldman Sachs’s analysis indicates the magnitude of the impact of Trump's proposed tariff hikes.

The effective tariff rate on Chinese imports increased by 1.5 percentage points between 2017 and 2019, and Trump's proposals could worsen this trend, resulting in far-reaching economic consequences.

Although higher tariffs would boost government revenues by approximately $30 billion per year, or 0.1 per cent, Goldman Sachs’s senior economist Ronnie Walker warned that the overall effect on the economy would likely be negative.

Walker noted that the adverse effects of higher tariffs on GDP are expected to outweigh the benefits, with the decline in real income and consumer spending outweighing any reductions in the trade deficit.

Likewise, the indirect repercussions, such as diminished business sentiment and disruptions in global supply chains, could make the negative economic impact far worse.

Referring to reports of cocaine being found in the White House in July last year, Trump claimed, without offering evidence, that Biden was "all jacked up" and "higher than a kite" during his March address.

When asked if he thinks that Joe Biden was using cocaine, Trump said, "I think what happened is, you know, that white stuff that they happened to find, which happened to be cocaine in the White House, I don't know, I think something's going on there".

"I watched his State of the Union, and he was all jacked up at the beginning. By the end, he was fading fast. There's something going on there. I want to debate. And I think debates, with him, at least, should be drug tested. I want a drug test," he continued.

When asked by the host if he is suggesting that the US President used cocaine, Trump responded, "I don't know what he's using, but that was not, hey, he was higher than a kite".

"But he's obviously, he's being helped in some way, because most of the time, he looks like he's falling asleep. And all of a sudden, he walked up there and did a poor job. But he was all jacked up," Donald Trump added.

Reacting to Trump's comments, Biden campaign spokesperson Ammar Moussa said it was a "weird outburst." He encouraged voters to focus on Trump's plans to deport people and separate families, and his false claims about the election. Moussa also suggested that Trump's campaign is struggling because his ideas don't appeal to voters.

An Atlanta-area judge, Scott McAfee, dismissed Trump's argument that his efforts to overturn the 2020 election were protected by the First Amendment. This means that the criminal indictment against former president Donald Trump in Georgia stands.

Judge McAfee said, "The defence has not presented, nor is the court able to find, any authority that the speech and conduct alleged is protected political speech."

This decision pushes forward the state racketeering case against Trump. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis says that she is ready for a trial potentially as soon as August, but till now, no trial date has been set yet for Trump and his 14 co-defendants.

This is not the first time Judge McAfee has rejected the First Amendment argument. He has taken similar actions against the pleas of other other defendants in the Georgia case. Other state and federal judges have consistently dismissed claims that Trump's actions were protected political speech.

“After interpreting the indictment’s language liberally in favor of the State as required at this pretrial stage, the Court finds that the Defendants’ expressions and speech are alleged to have been made in furtherance of criminal activity and constitute false statements knowingly and willfully made in matters within a government agency’s jurisdiction which threaten to deceive and harm the government,” McAfee's order read.

Trump's Georgia lawyer, Steve Sadow, said that Trump and other defendants respectfully disagree with the judgment and they will explore further legal options.

“It is significant that the court’s ruling made clear that defendants were not foreclosed from again raising their ‘as-applied challenges at the appropriate time after the establishment of a factual record',” Sadow’s statement said.

During hearings, Sadow contended that Trump's attempts to challenge the Georgia election results were protected political speech. On the other hand, Fulton County prosecutor Donald Wakeford argued that Trump's lies about the election were part of criminal activity with criminal intentions.

In a move experts have labelled "a grave step backwards", Facebook owner Meta has decided to decommission CrowdTangle, a vital digital tool for tracking viral falsehoods.

The move which is scheduled to take effect on August 14, as per experts, will disrupt efforts to detect political misinformation in a major election year.

What is CrowdTangle?

CrowdTangle, as per an AFP report, is a game-changing tool which for years has offered researchers and journalists crucial real-time transparency into the spread of conspiracy theories and hate speech on Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.

The monitoring tool, as per reports, will be replaced by another tool which researchers say lacks the same functionality and that news organisations will largely not have access to.

CrowdTangle will be replaced by a new Content Library, a technology still under development.

The tool, as per tech industry experts, including former CrowdTangle chief executive Brandon Silverman, is currently not an effective replacement, especially in a year when world-over elections are likely to see a proliferation of AI-enabled falsehoods.

While Meta claims that the Content Library will contain more comprehensive data than CrowdTangle and will be available to academics and non-profit election integrity experts, concerns remain about access for independent researchers and journalists.

However, Meta has announced that the new tool will not be accessible for-profit media. This has raised questions about transparency and accountability.

What the experts say

This move comes just three months before the 2024 US Presidential election that will see incumbent Joe Biden and Republican rival Donald Trump face off. Not only that, globally, dozens of countries will hold elections this year.

"In a year when almost half of the global population is expected to vote in elections, cutting off access to CrowdTangle will severely limit independent oversight of harms," warned Melanie Smith, director of research at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

"It represents a grave step backwards for social media platform transparency," she said.

Historically, CrowdTangle has alerted researchers about harmful activities such as foreign interference, online harassment, and incitements to violence. It played an important role in quickly identifying "misinformation, voter interference and suppression," during the 2020 US elections.

Global non-profit Mozilla Foundation, along with dozens of technology watchdogs and researchers, has urged Meta to retain CrowdTangle until at least January 2025, citing concerns about the new tool's limitations.

"Abandoning CrowdTangle while the Content Library lacks so much of CrowdTangle's core functionality undermines the fundamental principle of transparency," said the letter.

However, defending the decision, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said that the Content Library will offer "more comprehensive data than CrowdTangle" and will be accessible to academics and non-profit election integrity experts.

'A grave step backwards': Meta to scrap misinformation monitoring tool CrowdTangle ahead of 2024 US elections

Former UN climate chief Patricia Espinosa, in what can be seen as a cautionary statement, highlighted the potential jeopardy of Donald Trump's victory in the upcoming US presidential election on global climate ambitions, including the Paris Agreement.

Espinosa believes that Trump could withdraw the Paris Agreement, an important milestone in global efforts to address climate change which has drawn a collective commitment by nearly every country in the world to combat this pressing issue.

“I worry [about the potential election of Trump] because it would have very strong consequences, if we see a regression regarding climate policies in the US,” Espinosa said while also adding, “We are not yet aligned to 1.5C. That’s the reality. So if we see a situation where we would see regression on those efforts, then [the likelihood of staying within 1.5C] is very limited. It would certainly be a much bigger risk."

Notably, addressing the climate issues is crucial, however, it needs to have an inclusive and collaborative approach.

“We could see a slowdown, an even bigger slowdown [in action to reduce emissions], which would unfortunately probably take us to an even more terrible scenario, unless we see strong leadership coming from other places, [such as] Europe.”

Espinosa reportedly highlighted the critical role the United States play in addressing climate change and that the country continues to be an influential player in climate policy.

“What happens in the US has a very big impact in so many places around the world,” she reportedly said.

Espinosa stated, “When President Trump announced that they would withdraw from the Paris agreement, there was a certain fear that others would follow, and that there would be a setback in the pace of the climate change process."

"Not only did that not happen but some countries that had not yet adhered to the Paris agreement did so," she added while expressing hope that others countries are not expected to go back to their pledged climate goals.

“As of now, I don’t see countries really going back. I think that the process will continue," she said pointed out at a potential scenario where Trump take Washington out of 1.5 degrees commitment.

Regarding climate finance, Espinosa highlighted challenges faced by the Biden administration in securing commitments amidst political obstacles.
