Just hours after US President Trump said nobody needs NATO more than France, the US president met French President Emmanuel Macron in London ahead of the&nbsp;NATO anniversary summit.

On NATO, the US president said: "There are some countries that aren't fulfilling their commitments and those countries are going to be dealt with. Maybe I will deal with them from a trade standpoint, maybe I will deal with them in a different way."

"NATO is becoming different than it was, much bigger than it was and much stronger than it was. Because people are now fulfilling their commitments," the US president added.

The French president said NATO is "not just about money" while asserting "the first burden we share, the first cost we pay, is our soldiers'' lives. And I do believe that in such circumstances, we do pay what we have to pay for collective security."

Macron acknowledged that the US had "invested decades after decades" on NATO. "I do share the statements, that is why I am a strong supporter of a stronger European component in NATO," he said.

Macron had earlier called NATO "brain dead", during the meeting with Trump the French president said he stood by his statement made last month.&nbsp;

"It's a tough statement, though, when you make a statement like that, that is a very, very nasty statement to essentially 28, including them, 28 countries," Trump had told reporters.

Trump also spoke on the Frech digital tax calling it a "minor dispute" as the US threatened to impose tariffs on French cheese, champagne and handbags.

"We do a lot of trade with France and we have a minor dispute," Trump said.&nbsp;

I think we'll probably be able to work it out but we have a big trade relationship and I'm sure that within a short period of time things will be looking very rosy," the US president added.

On Turkey, Macron alleged that Turkish forces "sometimes" worked with fighters linked to the Islamic State group in its operation in northern Syria.

"When I look at Turkey, they now are fighting against those who fought with us. And sometimes they work with ISIS proxies," Macron said at a news conference with US President Donald.

"We have lost cooperation with Turkey, on security and trade and migration and European Union and France," Macron added.

The French president is due to meet Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan later in the day ahead of the NATO summit.

In a surprise move, the French president called for "strategic dialogue with Russia" but cautioned that the alliance should do so "with its eyes wide open".

Trump's comments came after reports the US tech giant was seeking an exemption from tariffs for the high-end computer, which in the past had been made in the United States. Apple is reportedly now shifting production to China.

"Make them in the USA, no tariffs!" the US president tweeted. Apple shares dipped slightly as Trump tweeted.&nbsp;

The move comes amid growing trade frictions between the two economic powers. Trump has threatened to slap punitive tariffs on more goods to press Beijing to accept more imports.

According to reports, Apple has chosen a Taiwanese contractor, Quanta Computer Inc., to manufacture the $6,000 desktop computer near Shanghai.

Trump slams Macron over digital tax on US tech giants, threatens 'reciprocal action' against French wine

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged US President Trump to "clarify his position" regarding the European Union, repeatedly the target of the US president's barbs.

"What is certain is that we have some ambiguities, especially when you look at Trump's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/in-no-deal-brexit-i-would-leave-eu-with-a-heavy-heart-jeremy-hunt-229982">position regarding Brexit</a>, and the fact that he promotes a hard Brexit," Macron told the New Yorker magazine an interview published Monday.

"I think he has to clarify his position vis-à-vis Europe," he said.

The interview was held against the backdrop of recent European elections in which Macron's centrist party, Republic on the Move, finished a close second to Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally.

"What is new at the European scale is that the rise of extremism, especially coming from the far right, is everywhere," Macron said when asked about the outcome.

"A few months ago, a lot of people thought that this new coalition of the far right could have a majority or could block any majority at the European Parliament, which didn't happen," he said.

"This is, for me, one of the positive outcomes of these elections, even if they were very much helped by foreign influences."

Asked if he included Trump among those foreign influences, Macron said, "No, because I don't totally assimilate Trump and Bannon."

Steve Bannon, Trump's former chief strategist, has been actively attempting to form a nationalist alliance in Europe, and Macron recently accused him of seeking "the dismantlement of Europe."

In an interview with NBC that aired over the weekend, the US president was asked about European efforts to keep alive the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran that Trump pulled the US out of last year.

"I don't care about the Europeans," Trump said. "The Europeans are going out and making a lot of money. The Europeans are fine."

"And let me tell you, we're very good to Europe. We take care of them. NATO, we spend a tremendous amount, a disproportionate amount. On trade, the European Union's taken, really, they have really taken advantage of us for a long time," he added.

"We have disagreements between the United States and France. It may happen, like in all families," he said -- but such differences would be short-term," he insisted.

"We're just citizens of the same planet," Macron said.

The French president said that free and fair trade was the need of the hour.

"We need a free and fair trade, for sure," Macron said.

"A commercial war opposing allies is not consistent with our mission, with our history, with our current commitments for global security," he added.
