The News Broadcasters Association (NBA) on Thursday appreciated the decision of the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to temporary suspend weekly ratings of news channels, calling it a ‘bold step’.

The NBA also urged the ratings agency to completely overhaul its systems for restoring the credibility of the information it collects.

Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) is a rating agency which gives media organizations and advertisers a richly-detailed view of “What India Watches”.

BARC releases weekly audience estimates for all the genre of television by state and language.

According to its website, BARC India also provides a suite of Insight products designed for Broadcasters, Advertisers and Agencies.

Earlier today, after the alleged fake Television Rating Points (TRP) scam, the BARC has stated that it intends to review and augment the current standards of measurement to improve on "statistical robustness", and the exercise will result in a "pause" in the weekly ratings for up to 12 weeks.

The exercise would cover all Hindi, Regional, English News and Business News channels with immediate effect, BARC said. 
 
Welcoming the decision, the news broadcasters association said that compromised data is creating a false narrative. NBA is the premier association of private news and current affairs broadcasters.

The TRP war not only eroded the credibility of the mainstream media but also reduced its standing as an authoritative source of information. &nbsp;The mainstream media in order to rise in the TRP ladder also became a poor caricature of the social media. Instead of doing authentic ground reports, it relied on social media footage and content to turbo run the newsrooms. In process, it not only lost the prestige but also its image of respectable platform delivering news.

Absence of TRP can have a sobering effect. News can become less polarising and focus can go back to ground reportage rather than gossip and views passing off as deep-dive analysis and genuine news. The absence of TRP will give time to the newsrooms to decide news priority rather than rushing from one news content to another. &nbsp;

Off late, news had become vicious and polarsing. It was not educating people. It was not providing the information. It was passing them editorial views masquerading as facts. News with position had metamorphosed into a monster. News with position was reduced to being partisan and bigoted as debates were being reduced to birth identity politics. However, responsibility does not lie on the door of the news producers only.

Some responsibility needs to be shared by the viewers and readers.

The news market needs to become subscription oriented. Mass media in Europe and America&nbsp;survives on its subscriber base. In India, news is a commodity which people at large feel should be cheap or free.&nbsp;

It is for this reason,&nbsp;no owner can ever charge the real rate of newspaper. It creates dependence on ads and dependence on big private players and the Government of India. So, if you are dependent on your survival on big players and government, then how can you expect the newsrooms to become completely independent. If one can pay for single malt, good food, then one also needs to pay for news and if not, then should rest the case forever.

Lastly, self-regulation is far better than regulation by the Government of India. By fighting in public and following the dharma of self-regulation, TV can invite the government to draft rules which will be worst.

The development comes as Republic TV, a national news channel, along with two local channels is being probed upon for rigging the ratings to earn revenues from advertisements.&nbsp;

Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema are the two other channels that are being investigated for foul play by the investigation officials.&nbsp;

At least five people have been arrested so far in connection with the scam by the Mumbai Police which unveiled it earlier this month.

The police has also interrogated Republic TV's executives with regard to the case.&nbsp;

BARC suspends news channels' weekly television ratings for three months

Parle India, makers of some popular consumer goods including the Parle G biscuits, has announced that they will not advertise their products on Indian news channels that promote aggressive and toxic content.

While speaking to MInt, senior category head of Parle Krishnarao Buddha said that the company will not advertise on news channels which show toxic content or are involved in the alleged TRP scam. 
 
Budhha also revealed that the company is in talks with brands so that they can collectively take a stand and put a restraint on advertising on such channels to send out a clear message.

The decision comes amid reports of certain news channels being accused of projecting 'fake' or 'inflated' TRPS. Last week the Mumbai police reportedly busted a 'fake TRP racket' where the households were reportedly asked to keep a particular news channel switched on the entire day. Two Marathi channels and one national news channel were named in the report submitted by Mumbai Police.

This is not the first time that a known brand has taken a stand against news channels. A few days ago, industrialist Rajiv Bajaj in an interview to channels stated that Bajaj Auto has blacklisted three channels for advertisement purpose.

The move made by Parle was lauded by many on Twitter as #ParleG trended on the social media platform on Monday with many hailing it as a socially responsible brand.
