<p>Although the EU will not start collecting CO2 emission charges at its borders until 2026, the commencement of CBAM's initial phase took place on Sunday (Oct 1).</p>

<p>During this phase, EU importers will be required to report the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of imported commodities, such as iron and steel, aluminium, cement, electricity, fertilizers, and hydrogen.</p>

<p>"It will equalise the price of carbon between domestic products and imports. This will ensure that the EU's climate policies are not undermined by production relocating to countries with less ambitious green standards or by the replacement of EU products by more carbon-intensive imports," the EU said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

Niger thwarts coup attempt days before presidential transition

<p>Prime Minister Theresa May has warned that European citizens arriving in Britain after Brexit next year may lose some rights, setting up a clash with the European Union over their treatment during any transition period.</p>

<p>Curbing immigration was a key reason why Britons voted to leave the EU in 2016, following a large influx of EU citizens, especially from poorer countries in eastern Europe.</p>

<p>The European Union has warned Britain that it must accept all decisions of the trading bloc and that its citizens should be able to secure full residence rights during the two-year transition period after it leaves the bloc.</p>
