<p>The strippers are people "who society has judged and marginalized, and we got the opportunity to humanize their stories," Wu said. "It's the greatest potential of art."</p>

<p>The humanization of the strippers as characters was crucial to director Lorene Scafaria.</p>

<p>"That was the whole idea of it from the beginning, to just show that this is a job like anything else," she said. "These are people trying to make ends meet and pay the bills... <p>Speaking exclusively to AFP on the red carpet at Toronto's film festival, Driver said the movie explores how a seemingly stable love can "transition," as his character's wife moves to Los Angeles to pursue the acting career she has long put on hold, taking their child with her.</p>

<p>"If you know someone where you're in the room together and it's second nature, and suddenly that's not there anymore, it can be a violent thing -- internally I mean, not physically violent," said Driver.</p>
