A person with knowledge of the situation says U.S. Olympic guard Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards has entered the health and safety protocols related to the coronavirus, which raises the possibility that he might miss the Tokyo Games. Beal will be tested multiple times in the coming days, according to the person who spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the player involved for USA Basketball was not revealed publicly. The results of those tests will likely determine if he remains on the roster, the person said.

“A member of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team has been placed under USA Basketball’s health and safety protocols," the federation announced in a statement Wednesday afternoon, without identifying the player involved. USA Basketball could still replace Beal before heading to Tokyo. The Americans picked their 12-man team last month but noted that it may change if necessary.

Players, and their family members, in Las Vegas, have been tested daily during their training camp there. Many have family with them now since those loved ones will not be allowed to travel to Tokyo for the Olympics because of virus-related restrictions there. Mask-wearing has been required and many of the same rules and policies that players had to adhere to during the NBA season has carried over to the U.S. camp. Beal has played in, and started, all three exhibitions for the U.S. so far in Las Vegas, averaging 10.3 points on 10 for 21 shooting. He has improved with each game, starting with a two-point effort in a loss to Nigeria, a 12-point effort in a loss to Australia then scored 17 in Monday night’s win over Argentina.

This would be Beal’s first time as an Olympian if he makes it to Tokyo. The U.S. doesn’t play a game in the Olympics until July 25 against France. “It was easy decision for me," Beal said after Monday’s win, appearing at a press conference without a mask but walking into the room with one on, and placing it back on before getting up to exit the room. I’ve always wanted to be a part of the Olympic team and be on this stage and have the opportunity to represent my country.

“Ultimately, you know, this is fun," Beal added. “This is something you want to be a part of and you realize not every player has that opportunity or blessing to play on this team. For me, it was a no-brainer." Beal averaged a career-best 31.3 points this season for Washington, earning his third All-Star selection and first All-NBA nod. Meanwhile, Tokyo reported its highest number of new COVID-19 cases in almost six months on Wednesday a bad sign with the Olympics set to open in just over a week. The 1,149 new cases reported in Tokyo on Wednesday was the highest one-day total since Jan. 22, and numbers have been surging in the Olympic host city for nearly a month.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach have both pledged that the Tokyo Olympics will be safe and secure, amid a government-mandated state of emergency in and around much of the Tokyo area. USA Basketball has two more exhibitions remaining, first Friday against Australia and then Sunday against Spain. The team is scheduled to fly to the Olympics on Monday.

If Beal cannot play in the remaining exhibitions, the Americans would be down to eight of their 12 players. The other three not in Las Vegas with the team Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday and Devin Booker are at the NBA Finals with Milwaukee and Phoenix.

The postponed Tokyo Olympic Games will create new "stars and legends" despite a one-year delay, fragmented preparations and the absence of fans in the stadiums, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said on Wednesday.

Postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Games get underway next week, with all spectators banned from the venues of the 33&nbsp;sports.

"These Games will have high sporting value under the circumstances," Bach told an online media roundtable. "We have seen how the athletes persevered and adapted over more than one year...

"This challenge was the same for all of them. There we will nevertheless see great sport and like in any Olympics new stars will be born there, and new legends will be created."

As cases rose, the government declared a new state of emergency for Tokyo and surrounding prefectures last week and Olympics organisers announced no fans would be allowed at events in those areas.

Several big names will also be missing either through failure to qualify, doping cases, or other reasons including an unwillingness to travel to Tokyo because of the virus.

The Olympics have lost much public support in Japan because of fears they will trigger a surge in infections.

Bach said he was supporting the strict measures imposed on the Games and its participants, which were necessary to help persuade the Japanese population that the Games would not become a superspreader event.

"We are trying to address the concerns," he said.

"We always knew there was scepticism among the population and that there are very special circumstances about which the population is concerned and which transferred to the Olympic Games."

He said a high vaccination rate among participants, an Olympic bubble with limited mobility for athletes and other stakeholders, banning spectators, and continuous testing were part of the organisers' plans to minimise any risk.

"This message has to get across. The Japanese people have to gain confidence in this," he said.

Tokyo Olympics: Chinese athletes complain about lax virus precautions at hotel

Kazunori&nbsp;Takishima's Olympic dream of setting a world record - a plan that had cost him almost $40,000 - ended this week when organisers said spectators would be banned for most of the Games events.

Takishima&nbsp;had bought a hundred Tokyo 2020 tickets, saving and scheming for years in the hope of attending the most Olympic events ever.

"I stayed up until three in the morning with my mind completely blank,"&nbsp;Takishima&nbsp;said of his reaction to the decision to ban fans, wearing a headband emblazoned with the national symbol of Japan. "I was just really stunned by the news. I wish I had been able to cry. That would have helped relieve my stress."

A Tokyo resident who runs a real estate office,&nbsp;Takishima, 45, said that for most of his life he'd had no interest in sports.

A chance visit to a skating competition and the echo of blades scraping on ice prompted him to attend the 2006 Torino Games, where he saw Japanese figure skater Shizuka Arakawa take gold. At that point, he was mesmerised by the Olympics.

Kazunori Takishima's Olympic dream of setting a world record - a plan that had cost him almost $40,000 - ended this week when organisers said spectators would be banned for most of the Games events. Takishima had bought a hundred Tokyo 2020 tickets, saving and scheming for years in the hope of attending the most Olympic events ever. "I stayed up until three in the morning with my mind completely blank," Takishima said of his reaction to the decision to ban fans, wearing a headband emblazoned with the national symbol of Japan. "I was just really stunned by the news. I wish I had been able to cry. That would have helped relieve my stress." A Tokyo resident who runs a real estate office, Takishima, 45, said that for most of his life he'd had no interest in sports. A chance visit to a skating competition and the echo of blades scraping on ice prompted him to attend the 2006 Torino Games, where he saw Japanese figure skater Shizuka Arakawa take gold. At that point, he was mesmerised by the Olympics. "I gain so many things when I attend Olympic events," Takishima said. Tokyo Olympics - The $40,000 man: Olympic fan's world record dream shattered by spectator ban

Nick Kyrgios will not represent Australia at this year's Olympics in Tokyo because he does not want to compete if there are no fans in the stands, he said on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, Olympic organisers said the Games would take place without spectators in host city Tokyo as a resurgent coronavirus forced Japan to declare a state of emergency in the capital that will continue throughout the event which starts on July 23.

"It has been my dream to represent Australia at the Olympics and I know I may never get that opportunity again," the 26-year-old Kyrgios wrote on social media.

"But I also know myself. The thought of playing in front of empty stands just doesn't sit right with me. It never has."

He added that he would not want to take an opportunity away from a healthy Australian athlete ready to represent the country and that he will use the time to "get his body right".

Kyrgios retired during his third-round match at Wimbledon against Felix Auger Aliassime on Saturday due to an abdominal injury.

Kyrgios joins some of the sport's biggest names, including Rafa Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Stan Wawrinka, Serena Williams and Simona Halep, in skipping the Games.

Tennis: Nick Kyrgios says he will not play at fan-free Tokyo Games

Japan is set to declare a state of emergency for Tokyo that will run through its hosting of the Olympics to try to contain a new wave of coronavirus infections, a key minister said on Thursday, as organisers consider banning all spectators from the Games.

The move is the latest blow to the troubled Olympics, already once delayed because of the pandemic and plagued by a series of setbacks, including massive budget overruns.

Medical experts have said for weeks that having no spectators at the Games would be the least risky option amid widespread public concern that the influx of thousands of athletes and officials will fuel a fresh wave of infections.

Organisers have already banned overseas spectators and have for now set a cap on domestic viewers at 50% of capacity, up to 10,000 people. Talks to finalise the restrictions on the spectators are expected either on Thursday or on Friday.

The so called five-way talks would be chaired by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach, who arrives in Tokyo on Thursday. Other participants include Tokyo and national governments and Paralympic officials.

Whatever the outcome, those attending the Games have been asked to show their support by clapping rather than cheering or singing. Public viewing sites have been cancelled and companies, wary of public opposition, have been hesitant about advertising related to the Games, adding to a subdued mood in the Japanese capital.

TOKYO INFECTIONS RISE

Japan`s economy minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, who heads the government`s coronavirus response, said a state of emergency in Tokyo is set to begin on July 12 and run through Aug 22.

The Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to Aug. 8.

Japan has not experienced the kind of explosive COVID-19 outbreaks seen in many other countries but has had more than 810,000 cases and 14,900 deaths.

The imposition of the emergency comes after new daily infections in Tokyo, currently under slightly less strict "quasi emergency" curbs, rose to 920 on Wednesday, the highest level since mid-May.

A slow vaccine rollout has meant only a quarter of Japan`s population has had at least one COVID-19 vaccination shot.

Under the heightened restrictions, restaurants will be asked to stop serving alcohol, Nishimura said.

The move is expected to be made official later on Thursday and followed by a news conference by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

Areas neighbouring Tokyo where some Olympic events are also slated to take place, such as Chiba and Kanagawa, are set to remain under "quasi emergency" through August 22.

SPECTATORS

Underscoring the last-minute nature of the preparations, organisers told Olympic sponsors on Wednesday they are anticipating two scenarios when Tokyo goes under the state of emergency: having no spectators or setting a 5,000-spectator cap, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

In the no-spectator scenario, all sports and opening and closing ceremonies will likely be carried out without fans, including tickets allocated to the sponsors, the organisers told companies in online meetings.

If the number of spectators is capped at 5,000 per venue, tickets allocated to Olympic sponsors would be halved, and organisers also expect any session after 9 p.m. would be staged without spectators, the source said.

The lack of crowds may further strain the Games'&nbsp;budget, which has already blown out to an estimated $15.4 billion, with ticket revenues of around $815 million expected to take a big hit.

The organising committee did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Until this week, officials have insisted they could organise the Games safely with some spectators, but a ruling party setback in a Tokyo assembly election on Sunday, which some allies of Suga attributed to public anger over the Olympics, had forced the change of tack, sources said.

Japan will hold a parliamentary election later this year and the government`s insistence that the Games - postponed last year as the virus spread around the world - should go ahead this year could cost it at the ballot box, they said.

Olympics without fans: Japan to declare COVID-19 emergency for Tokyo

He’s made it to the Olympics 4x400m relay and will be representing India -a country of 1.3 billion people. But, his parents- Pandi, a construction labourer and Panchavarnam, a homemaker, hardly have an inkling of an idea of how significant their son’s feat is. However, for his colleagues at the Tamil Nadu Police, this is a historic leap, as one from their Service has made it to the world’s biggest sporting event. Zee Media spoke to the 25-year old sprinter to understand his journey thus far.

Growing up, Naganathan never had it easy. His father’s meagre income from working as a construction or agricultural labourer was what fed the five children and their homemaker mother. It was a struggle for his parents to even make ends meet, while also ensuring that the five children got their education. After they turned 15, Naganathan and his brother worked as construction labourers, ferrying material, and performing masonry over the weekends to support their family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It was around 10th grade (aged 15) that Naganathan had taken to running. His foray was purely out of fascination from seeing his peers succeed on the track in his village school. He started off as a barefoot runner, as shoes were too much of a luxury. With the support of his Physical training teacher from school, he ran 1500m races. Following his encouraging performance, the school gifted him a pair of running spikes, by the time he was in 12th grade.

While pursuing his BA History at the PTMTM college in his hometown, he continued his stellar runs by winning golds at the college and university level with 400m timings of nearly 49 seconds. A certificate from having taken part in an all India meet in Bengaluru made him eligible to apply for a job in the State Police department, under the sports quota.&nbsp;

Having passed the entrance tests, he joined the Tamil Nadu Police in 2017 as a Constable, with a posting in Chennai. To better his track performance, despite having less time to spare, he trained before and after his duty hours. It was Prabhakaran, a friend and batchmate who recognized the inherent potential and coached Naganathan during his initial days in the service, in the absence of a dedicated coach.&nbsp;

To continue his training and nutrition, along with his basic living expenses in an expensive metropolis like Chennai, Naganathan even secured a loan of Rs.5 lakhs - of which he spent 3 lakhs for his needs and offered the rest to his family, back home in Ramanathapuram. Manikandan, an athlete since his schooling and also Naganathan’s roommate was also instrumental in helping the sprinter cope with injuries and better his technique, besides making the necessary arrangement for training and equipment.&nbsp;

Since 2019, there has been no looking back for Naganathan who went on to bag an individual Gold (400m) at the Chief Minister’s Meet, a gold at the 400m individual and relay events in the All India Police meet in Chandigarh, followed by another gold in the 400m individuals at the Indian Grand Prix. He also ran a personal best and completed the 400m dash in 46.09 seconds at the Federation Cup, which took him to the Indian Camp at Patiala that was training sportspersons for the Olympics.

To this day, his friends continue to lend him money to support his training and basic needs. The sprinter says that he repays his friends promptly after he receives his salary, but whatever remains is barely sufficient for his sustenance. Recently, he was also gifted a running kit by the Greater Chennai Police.

Until he started winning big at the National level, Naganathan didn’t even tell his parents about his athletics training and achievements. All this was owing to fear of backlash from his uneducated parents, who wanted their five children to continue and focus on their respective academic pursuits and careers to support the family. In the eyes of his parents, sports are a needless pursuit, in the face of all their struggles to fend for themselves.&nbsp;

Now he coyly admits that his parents have some knowledge about the Olympics and are happy about his feats. He credits his siblings for having convinced their parents and conveyed the message of his having won the coveted ticket and an India jersey to Tokyo.

Tokyo Olympics to be held behind closed doors under state of emergency measures

On Wednesday, the Tokyo metropolitan government had reported 920 new virus cases, marking the highest daily figure since mid-May. Meanwhile, International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Thomas Bach arrived in Tokyo on Thursday.

Japan declares state of emergency due to COVID-19 two weeks ahead of Tokyo Olympics

At a meeting with experts, Japanese government officials proposed a plan to issue a state of emergency in Tokyo from next Monday to August 22, fearing an ongoing COVID-19 surge will multiply during the Olympic games.

The International Swimming Federation has banned caps designed for Black athletes at the Tokyo Olympics. FINA reportedly said the caps do not 'follow the natural form of the head'.

Gravitas: The Soul Cap ban controversy

American sprinter Sha'Carri&nbsp;Richardson&nbsp;will not be selected to the U.S. 4x100-metre relay team for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after she accepted a one-month ban for testing positive for cannabis.

The 21-year-old, who streaked to victory in the 100m at the U.S. Olympic trials in June, was expected to be one of the biggest draws at the upcoming Games in Japan.

Her supporters had hoped she could still compete in the relay event after the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) confirmed the suspension last week.

"We are incredibly sympathetic toward Sha'Carri&nbsp;Richardson's extenuating circumstances and strongly applaud her accountability - and will offer her our continued support both on and off the track," USA Track &amp; Field (USATF) said in a written statement.

Richardson&nbsp;said in an NBC interview last week that she used the banned substance to cope with the death of her mother.

Richardson's agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The attention that is on track now and was because of very very few names,"&nbsp;Richardson&nbsp;tweeted later on Tuesday. "So if that's where fans support lay, you can't be mad at that."

The women's 100m event in Tokyo starts on July 30, two days after&nbsp;Richardson's ban ends, but she is unable to compete in the event as her suspension wiped out her results at the trials.

Selection to the relay team was her only remaining chance of competing at the Games. The relay coaches, with input from USATF performance staff, are able to select two athletes on top of the first four trials finishers.

"All USATF athletes are equally aware of and must adhere to the current anti-doping code, and our credibility as the National Governing Body would be lost if rules were only enforced under certain circumstances," USATF said.

The organisation added it believes the World Anti-Doping Agency rules regarding THC, the main active ingredient in cannabis, "would be re-evaluated."

"While our heartfelt understanding lies with Sha'Carri, we must also maintain fairness for all of the athletes who attempted to realize their dreams by securing a place on the U.S. Olympic Track &amp; Field Team," it said.

"While our heartfelt understanding lies with Sha'Carri, we must also maintain fairness for all of the athletes who attempted to realize their dreams by securing a place on the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team," it said.

The Japanese government plans to impose a virus state of emergency in Tokyo during the Olympics, reports said Wednesday, meaning spectators could be barred from venues.&nbsp;

The emergency measures -- less strict than a blanket lockdown -- will be in force until August 22, several Japanese media outlets reported, following a rise in cases less than three weeks before the Games begin.

"The government decided to declare the fourth state of emergency for Tokyo and communicated the decision to the ruling parties," public broadcaster NHK said.

Kyodo News, citing a senior government official, said it was now likely the Olympics would be held behind closed doors.

The pandemic-postponed 2020 Games will take place under strict anti-infection rules, with overseas fans already banned.

Organisers set a limit last month of 10,000 fans, or half of each venue's capacity, but recently warned that a fully closed-door Games remained an option as the virus situation worsens.

Japan's Covid-19 outbreak has not been as severe as in some countries, with around 14,800 deaths, but experts say another wave could stretch medical services as the Games begin.

Participants have already begun arriving in Japan, with 11,000 Olympic athletes from around 200 countries set to take part.

Private flame-lighting ceremonies will replace public relay events across the capital beginning Friday, the Tokyo city government said.

Right up to the opening ceremony on July 23, the torch events will be streamed online, with authorities urging spectators to watch them "in the comfort of your home".

Only the relay leg in the Ogasawara islands -- a remote archipelago some 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) south of Tokyo -- will go ahead as scheduled.

The nationwide torch relay has been fraught with problems since it began in March, with almost half the legs disrupted in some way.

The relay was forced off public roads in famous tourist cities such as Kyoto and Hiroshima over fears that crowds of fans could spread the virus.

And it has also met with some public opposition, with a 53-year-old woman arrested on Sunday for squirting a runner with liquid from a water gun.

Olympic organisers have warned competitions at the Games could be held behind closed doors, as they are forced to rethink how many spectators can attend.

They set a limit last month of 10,000 domestic fans or half of each venue's capacity. Overseas fans have already been barred.

But Japan's government is this week expected to extend anti-virus measures in Tokyo and elsewhere, with a further decision on Olympic fans to follow.

Current restrictions cap spectators at non-Olympic sports events at 5,000 and limit the opening hours of bars and restaurants.

On Tuesday, Games organisers urged members of the public not to line the route of the marathon over fears that crowds of fans could spread the virus.

They said it was "necessary to reduce the risk of infection by restricting the movement of members of the public".

The marathon will take place in the northern city of Sapporo, which is currently under the same anti-virus measures as Tokyo.

Tokyo 2020 scraps Olympic torch relay legs in capital

Had her grandmother, her only guardian paid heed to relatives and other villagers of Sakkimangalam, 23-year old Revathi Veeramani would have been living a different life today, perhaps, as a married woman. Now, she’ll have more than a billion hearts rooting for her, as she dons the India jersey and races for the country in the 4x400m mixed relay event at the Tokyo Olympics, after securing her berth recently. The sprinter who is making her Olympics foray revealed this and much more about her life in an exclusive conversation with Zee Media.&nbsp;

Born in a very poor family in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai, Revathi, the first of two daughters, lost her parents at a very young age and was brought up by her grandmother K. Aarmmal. Struggling to make ends meet and with even a single meal too hard to get, their grandmother, had no option but to leave the girls in a Government Hostel. From their second grade until completing their twelfth grade, the sisters remained in the hostel and carried on with their education, barely meeting their grandmother once a month.&nbsp;

While she had been taking part in school-level track events, it was during 12th grade that Revathi took part in a state-level 100m dash. Despite running barefoot, she put on a stunning performance and made the finals, thus impressing&nbsp;K. Kannan, an athletics coach, who spotted her talent.&nbsp;

Kannan went on to coach her and support her financially, while also providing food and accommodation at his own house. Realizing her immense talent and potential, he urged the young athlete to work harder and pursue her career in sports. With his help, Revathi got admitted into the Lady Doak College in Madurai, where she continued to train.&nbsp;

What followed was the sweetness of her maiden victory - Gold medals in both 100m &amp;200m at the Junior Nationals in 2016, following by a Silver medal at the Senior Nationals, which landed her a place at the Indian National camp in Patiala that was training athletes for the Olympics.&nbsp;

Training under the National Camp Coach and Galina Bukharina she worked on getting faster and honing her technique, following which she competed at the 2019 Asian Championship in Doha, securing fourth place in the 4x100m relay. Under the advice of her coach, she also made the switch from 100m races to the 400m dash. Later that year she also took part in the World Championship in the 4x400m relay.&nbsp;

It was in 2019 that she got employed by the Southern Railways’ Madurai Division as a Commercial Clerk and Ticket Examiner. She is immensely grateful to her organization for having provided her with continued support and encouragement while she trains in faraway Patiala. She says that her income from the Railways and that of her sister (who is a Policewoman in Chennai) is of great help in supporting their grandmother, aged 76.&nbsp;

Injury struck in November 2020, when she suffered knee pain, which further aggravated and kept her off the track for a handful of months. the young sprinter underwent the most difficult phase of her track career while being under strict bed rest while being treated by her physio Simoni Shah. A victory at a state meet, following her recovery helped her regain her spirits, which also reflected in her personal best of 400m in 53.55seconds and a first place at the Olympics qualifier event.&nbsp;

Revathi says that her Granny is more delighted than ever, after having known the news of her qualifying for the Olympics. Looking back at her journey, she exudes that if she could make it to the Olympics, despite the circumstances she grew up in, anyone can do it.&nbsp;

“These days there are separate hostels for sportspersons at the district level, training and schooling is free and they take care of everything. Back in our days, we didn’t know much about this. But the most important part is to perform to the fullest of our ability - Sponsors, coaching and support facilities will all follow” she signs off, with immense gratitude for everyone that has supported her get thus far.&nbsp;

Former world all-round champion Xiao Ruoteng, two-times parallel bars world champion Zou Jingyuan, Olympic bronze medallist Lin Chaopan and Olympic debutant Sun Wei will compete in the men`s all-round event.

The quartet were part of the team that won gold at the 2018 world championships and finished second, behind Russia, the following year.

Parallel bars specialist Lin, who won bronze in the all-round team event at Rio in 2016, was picked over Zhang Boheng for his superior international experience, despite the latter having higher scores in all three Olympic trial events.

"We believe that Zhang is a talented young athlete who can be a perfect backup for the whole team," men`s coach Wang Hongwei said.

Liu Yang and You Hao, who were also part of the bronze-winning team in Rio, will head to their second Olympics and compete in the individual events.

Tang Xijing, the all-round silver medallist at the 2019 World Championships, will lead the women`s team, with Ou Yushan, Lu Yufei and Zhang Jin completing the line-up.

Breastfeeding&nbsp;athletes&nbsp;will be allowed to&nbsp;bring&nbsp;children&nbsp;to the&nbsp;Tokyo&nbsp;Olympics "when necessary",&nbsp;organisers&nbsp;have announced, after criticism from mothers over tough rules on bringing the family to the Games.

The clarification was welcomed by some&nbsp;athletes&nbsp;as a relief, but US football star Alex Morgan slammed&nbsp;organisers&nbsp;for keeping her in the dark about the criteria.

Athletes' families are banned from attending the pandemic-postponed Games, under anti-virus rules that&nbsp;organisers&nbsp;say are needed to hold the event safely.

But Games chiefs have now made an exception for&nbsp;breastfeeding&nbsp;infants "after careful consideration of the unique situation", saying they will be allowed to accompany their mothers "when necessary".

Nursing&nbsp;children&nbsp;will not be allowed to stay at the Olympic Village though and must stay in private accommodation such as hotels.

Organisers&nbsp;said in a statement late on Wednesday that it was "inspiring that so many&nbsp;athletes&nbsp;with young&nbsp;children&nbsp;are able to continue competing at the highest levels".

The statement added that they were "committed to doing everything possible to enable them to perform at the&nbsp;Tokyo&nbsp;2020 Games".

US football star Alex Morgan, whose daughter Charlie turned one in May, said the policy did not go far enough.

"Still not sure what 'when necessary' even means," the twice women's World Cup winner and Olympic gold-medallist, tweeted late Wednesday.

"Is that determined by the mother or the IOC? We are Olympic mothers telling you, it is NECESSARY. I have not been contacted about being able to&nbsp;bring&nbsp;my daughter with me to Japan and we leave in 7 days."

Athletes&nbsp;had complained about the rules on social media, with Canadian basketball player Kim Gaucher saying she was "being forced to decide between being a&nbsp;breastfeeding&nbsp;mum or an Olympic athlete" in an Instagram video.

But she said she was "so relieved" after hearing about the U-turn.

"Woke up to some big news this morning -- Sophie can come to&nbsp;Tokyo. So relieved that I don't have to make this decision," she said in an Instagram video.

American marathon runner Aliphine Tuliamuk had also voiced her concern about the proposed ban.

"Sometimes I think, what if something horrible happens and I never come back home, like what if I never make it back from&nbsp;Tokyo?" she wrote on Instagram.

"I am sure all moms understand this exact feeling."

Organisers&nbsp;said "suitable measures" would be applied to infants entering Japan for the Games.

Organisers said in a statement late on Wednesday that it was "inspiring that so many athletes with young children are able to continue competing at the highest levels". The statement added that they were "committed to doing everything possible to enable them to perform at the Tokyo 2020 Games". I have not been contacted about being able to bring my daughter with me to Japan and we leave in 7 days." But she said she was "so relieved" after hearing about the U-turn. "Woke up to some big news this morning -- Sophie can come to Tokyo. So relieved that I don't have to make this decision," she said in an Instagram video. American marathon runner Aliphine Tuliamuk had also voiced her concern about the proposed ban. "Sometimes I think, what if something horrible happens and I never come back home, like what if I never make it back from Tokyo?" she wrote on Instagram. "I am sure all moms understand this exact feeling." Organisers said "suitable measures" would be applied to infants entering Japan for the Games.

Serena Williams will not be travelling to Tokyo for the Olympic Games, the 23-times Grand Slam singles&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;champion said on Sunday without giving the reasons behind her decision.

American Williams, who will turn 40 in September, won the singles title at the London Olympics in 2012 and she has also picked up three gold medals in doubles with sister Venus -- in Sydney (2000), Beijing (2008), and London.

"Yeah, I'm actually not on the Olympic list, so... Not that I'm aware of. If so, then I shouldn't be on it," Williams told reporters on the eve of the Wimbledon Grand Slam.

Top men's players such as Rafa Nadal and Dominic Thiem have also opted to skip the Tokyo Games, which start on July 23.

Roger Federer, a 20-times major winner who also turns 40 in August, said he would like to go to the Olympics but would make a final call after Wimbledon.

There are persistent worries among the general public and medical experts in Japan that the world's largest sporting event, which was delayed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, could trigger a new wave of infections.

Organizers have barred family members of athletes from attending the Games due to safety protocols, while foreign spectators are also excluded and domestic crowds will be allowed in restricted numbers.

The restrictions on international arrivals would have separated Williams from her daughter Alexis Olympia, who was born in 2017.

"There's a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision," Williams said when asked if it would be difficult for her to miss the Games.

"I don't really want to... I don't feel like going into them today. Maybe another day. Sorry.

"In the past, it's (Olympics) been a wonderful place for me. I really haven't thought about it, so I'm going to keep not thinking about it."

WIMBLEDON CAMPAIGN

The All England Club's lush green courts are a happy hunting ground for Williams, who has lifted the Venus Rosewater Dish seven times along with her Olympics singles gold medal.

She has reached the finals in her last four Wimbledons and is one of the favorites to win a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam with the absence of world No.2 Naomi Osaka and third-ranked Simona Halep.

"I think that the women's draw is so deep, regardless of who you play," said Williams, who will open her campaign against 100th-ranked Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

"You really have to show up now. There are no longer matches that are going to be a sure walk-through. You just have to really have your head in, have your game on.

"I feel like, if anything, everyone plays really hard. I feel like it doesn't matter who you play, you have to be ready. Everyone worked really hard to be here."

Tokyo Olympics 2020: Who is accountable if the COVID-19 virus spreads?

The countdown to the 2020 Olympics is underway with less than a month to go for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games. The organisers and the International Olympic Committee have unveiled a series of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the two-week-long event and a severe breach of restrictions could even lead to expulsion. Many are calling these measures harsh but Indian medal hopeful and reigning Badminton World Champion PV Sindhu has backed the IOC's plans for keeping her and her fellow athletes safe. Sindhu was in conversation with WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard was selected as the first transgender Olympic athlete Monday after Kiwi officials made a groundbreaking call on "a highly sensitive and complex issue".

New Zealand Olympic Committee chief Kereyn Smith said Hubbard, 43 -- who was born male but transitioned to female in her 30s -- met all the qualification criteria for transgender athletes.

"We acknowledge that gender identity in sport is a highly sensitive and complex issue requiring a balance between human rights and fairness on the field of play," Smith said in a statement.

"As the New Zealand team, we have a strong culture of manaaki (caring) and inclusion and respect for all."

Hubbard, who also competed as a male, became eligible to lift as a woman after showing testosterone levels below the threshold required by the International Olympic Committee.

She will contest the women's +87kg category in Tokyo, an event in which she is currently ranked 16th in the world.

Former New Zealand weightlifter Tracey Lambrechs, who was forced to drop a division to make the 2018 Commonwealth Games because Hubbard was selected in her preferred event, said the selection was unfair.

Lambrechs, now retired, said the concerns of female-born weightlifters had been ignored by officials.

"Everyone's just shut up and worried about how they'll be viewed in regards to talking out about transgender athletes," she told Radio New Zealand.

Lambrechs said if Hubbard made the podium in her event then another medal of the same colour should be awarded to the athlete who placed after her.

"If Laurel was to win gold then the next biological female should also win gold... then Laurel would be an Olympic champion as a transgender and then we would have our female athlete as an Olympic champion as well," she said.

Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand president Richie Patterson praised Hubbard for coming back from a potentially career-ending elbow injury suffered at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

"Laurel has shown grit and perseverance in her return from a significant injury and overcoming the challenges in building back confidence on the competition platform," he said.

<h2>- 'Keep an open mind' -</h2>

IOC rules state a trans woman can compete provided her testosterone levels are below 10 nanomoles per litre, a criteria Hubbard meets.

But critics say she has numerous physical advantages from growing up male that make her presence in the competition unfair for female-born athletes.

Hubbard, an intensely private person who avoids the media, did not address the gender issue in remarks released by the NZOC.

She thanked the community for supporting her return from injury.

"I am grateful and humbled by the kindness and support that has been given to me by so many New Zealanders... your support, your encouragement, and your aroha (love) carried me through the darkness," she said.

US transgender BMX rider Chelsea Wolfe also has an outside chance of competing at the Games after being named as an alternate in the American team, meaning she will travel to Tokyo but only participate if a teammate is forced to withdraw.

But it is Hubbard who has become an unwitting lightning rod for the sometimes vitriolic discussion on transgender participation in sport.

Donald Trump Jr. had labelled the prospect of Hubbard being selected "ridiculous", while British television presenter Piers Morgan railed against women's rights being "destroyed on the altar of political correctness".

In a rare interview in 2017, Hubbard spoke about learning to block out criticism and "keep on pushing" as an athlete.

"I'm mindful I won't be supported by everyone but I hope that people can keep an open mind and perhaps look at my performance in a broader context," she told stuff.co.nz.
