The bedchamber sword was handed over to Major General Baird who had laid the final siege of Seringapatam, the capital city of Mysore.

<h2>All about the sword that failed to get bidders</h2>

The sword was one of the two swords which were kept in Tipu Sultan's personal armour and was later given to Charles, the 1st Marquess and 2nd Earl Cornwallis in 1799, just after the defeat of Tipu and was passed down in his family. 
 
In February 1786, Cornwallis was appointed commander-in-chief and governor-general of British India and headed the British forces during the Third Anglo-Mysore War. 
 
In 1805, he was reappointed to the position but he died after serving for barely two months. The two swords were put up for sale by his descendants to pay for their stately home Port Eliot's expensive restoration in Cornwall, where they have been living. 
 
The second sword which was placed for auction by the family along with a gem-set and enamelled sword and scabbard finally sold for £100,800 (approximately $122250).

It was estimated to be priced at £80k to £120k ($97k to $145k). Two other weapons which belonged to the armies of Tipu Sultan and were placed at the same sale for auction by a different collection, were also not purchased. 
 
One weapon has a captured English blade which was taken as a war booty by Tipu in the previous battle. The blade has been held in the jaws of a head-shaped pommel of a tiger. Tipu Sultan's flintlock musketoon also failed to fetch its reserve price. 
 
It is believed that the Israel-Hamas war may have impacted bis on these swords at Thursday's "Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds" sale, along with inflation and high-interest rates.

As per the news agency PTI, a group of right-wing activists held a demonstration against the purported use of Tipu Sultan's image along with an 'objectionable' audio message that was allegedly shared as social media status by some people.

<h2>Maharashtra CM urges people to maintain peace</h2>

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday appealed for calm and said that nobody should take the law into their hands.

"It is the government's responsibility to maintain law and order in the state. I also appeal to the public for peace and calm. A police investigation is underway and action will be taken against those found guilty," CM Shinde.

"Law and order is the responsibility of the government, Home Department. No one will be allowed to take the law and order into their hands. In such situations, action will be taken against those people. The Home Department and the Home Minister himself are keeping a close watch on the situation. I'm monitoring the situation myself through the senior officials", he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that there is no forgiveness in the state for those who appreciate Aurangzeb.

"Police are also taking action. At the same time, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that the people should also maintain peace, and no untoward incident happens anywhere,"&nbsp;he added.

<h2>Case registered against four</h2>

According to officials, the police registered a case against four people who carried posters of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb during a procession in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, a video of which later went viral on the internet.

The Bhingar Camp police officials said that the procession was held in the Fakirwada area at 9 am on Sunday.

"Amid music and dance in the procession, four persons carried posters of Aurangzeb. An offence was registered against these four persons under Indian Penal Code sections for intention to incite a community to commit an offence against another community, hurting religious sentiments, and other offences," PTI quoted a Bhingar Camp police official as saying.

Tipu Sultan was killed in the battle against the East Indian Company and the sword was reportedly "looted". According to Bonhams, the sword was presented to British Army officer, Major General David Baird, "as a token of their high esteem of his courage and conduct in the assault with he commanded and in which Tipu Sultan was slain".&nbsp;

The sword is said to be the finest and most important of the weapons in his arsenal with a proven personal association with the ruler.&nbsp;

The site also mentioned that the blade, emblazoned 'The Sword of the Ruler,' is exquisite. Mughal swordsmiths created it after seeing German blades transported to India in the 16th century.&nbsp;

The hilt is inlaid with superbly wrought gold lettering depicting five of God's characteristics and two invocations to God by name.&nbsp;

He went a step further and stressed that his government was working towards dropping lessons on the Tiger of Mysuru from textbooks in the state. 'I don't think Tipu was a freedom fighter. We are against everything to do with Tipu, including his references in textbooks' said the Chief Minister while addressing the media in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

The statement comes just a day after Suresh Kumar, the state's Primary and Secondary Education Minister formed a committee to look into a proposal to drop references to Tipu Sultan from school textbooks.&nbsp;

The committee is set to meet on November 7 and will be submitting a report on the same.&nbsp;

The committee was formed after MLA Appachu Ranjan shot multiple letters alleging that history was being distorted in the textbooks and that the ruler was a bigot and not a freedom fighter.&nbsp;

While speaking to WION, Ranjan said that Tipu is being unfairly glorified in the textbooks and hence he placed the demand to drop the lessons before the government.&nbsp;

'I am saying that Tipu should be dropped from textbooks because the books say he is a freedom fighter. But he is not at all a freedom fighter. He fought only to expand his kingdom. If Tipu was a freedom fighter, he would not have looted temples in Mangalore and other places. There are many examples where he forcibly converted subjects to Islam. That is the reason I feel Tipu should not be called a freedom fighter. We should tell the truth to our younger generation. I say it's odd because this very Chief Minister had donned the costume of Tipu Sultan 7 years ago at a function to say he identified with what Tipu Sultan stood for. This debate cannot be on the knowledge that is new as Tipu Sultan has been dead for more than 200 years now. The other reason is if you have a problem with Tipu Sultan because of the violence he inflicted on a particular community, you must have an objection to all kings because all kings have killed people from one community or another. Every community can now say that their ancestors were killed by a certain king so there should be no references to him.' says Prof Chandan Gowda, Historian.&nbsp;

The debate has however boiled down to a single question of whether Tipu Sultan was a freedom fighter. While critics of the ruler feel he was no freedom fighter and was merely protecting his kingdom, historians have a different view on the matter. 'Tipu Sultan had a sense that the British were not like any other enemy. He did try to get the Nizam of Hyderabad and Marathas to unite against the British. Which he was not able to do. So his struggle to keep them out can be seen as part of freedom struggle history. If Kittur Rani Chennamma can be part of the freedom struggle, Tipu Sultan qualifies for it... There was no India at that time. Tipu was defending Mysuru. But if defending Mysuru is all that he cared for then that's all he would've done. Would he then have tried to build a larger alliance of the Marathas and the Nizam to keep them(British) out of Peninsular India?' questions Prof Gowda.&nbsp;

Karnataka government might drop Tipu Sultan chapters from textbooks

A collection of rare artefacts discovered by a couple after years of lying wrapped up in their attic in the English county of Berkshire and evaluated as items from Tipu Sultan's armoury were auctioned on Tuesday for around 107,000 pounds.

The highlight lot, a silver-mounted 20-bore flintlock gun and bayonet from the personal armoury of the last ruler of Mysore, proved hugely popular as it attracted 14 bids before going under the hammer for 60,000 pounds.

"Unlike other Tipu Sultan guns, this one exhibits clear signs of having been badly damaged in its past...Rather than being taken directly from the rack after the fall of Seringapatam, it appears to have been collected from the battlefield," the lot description notes.

The other highlight lot, a gold-encrusted sword and suspension belt ensemble believed to be one of Tipu Sultan's personal swords, attracted as many as 58 bids before being sold to the winning bidder for 18,500 pounds.

The two centrepieces formed part of a collection of eight items brought back by Major Thomas Hart of the East India Company after the Tiger of Mysore's defeat at Seringapatam in 1799.

Alongside the arms, an intricately designed Betel Nut Casket (17,500 pounds) and a Gold East India Company Seal ring (2,800 pounds) belonging to Major Hart, believed to have passed down generations before landing in the hands of the current owners, were among the other big sellers of Tuesday's sale.

Berkshire-based Antony Cribb Ltd auctioneers, who specialise in arms and armoury related sales, had announced the auction following the "exciting discovery" earlier this year and said that majority of the buyer interest had come from Indians based in India.

The Indian High Commission in London was made aware of the artefacts by the India Pride Project, a worldwide volunteer network set up to track "India's stolen heritage", and attempted to convince the auction house to consider voluntarily restoring the items to India.

The India Pride Project, which was instrumental in the restitution of a 12th century Buddha statue stolen from Nalanda in Bihar last year via the Indian High Commission in London, said it would continue lobbying for such artefacts to find their way back to India.

"You haven't really decolonised a nation unless you've given back what's theirs," said Anuraag Saxena, founder of the India Pride Project.

However, the auction house insisted that no laws were being broken and also confirmed that the beneficiary family had decided to make a sizeable donation to a school in India from the money generated from the auction. 
"The family is not motivated by money and sincerely hope these items find their way back to India, maybe to a museum, for future generations to have access to it," said Antony Cribb of the auction house.

President Ram Nath&nbsp;Kovind&#39;s&nbsp;mention of the 18th century Mysore ruler, Tipu Sultan, in his address to the joint session of the Karnataka legislature on Wednesday triggered a political slugfest between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP.

The development comes amid a raging controversy over the state government celebrating the birth anniversary of the Mysore ruler on November 10. The move has been opposed tooth and nail by the BJP which sees Tipu Sultan as a `religious bigot&#39; and a &#39;brutal killer&#39;.

&#39;Tipu Sultan died a heroic death fighting the British. He was also a pioneer in the development and use of Mysore rockets in warfare. This technology was later adopted by the Europeans,&#39; Kovind said while noting that Karnataka is a land of formidable soldiers.

The president&#39;s reference to Tipu Sultan came after he noted the contributions of various historical figures of Karnataka, including Krishnadevaraya who was the emperor of the Vijayanagara empire from 1509 to 1529.

As the president made the reference about the&nbsp;18th-century&nbsp;ruler in his speech to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the state&nbsp;legislature, the Congress members cheered by thumping on the desks.

As the president made the reference about the 18th-century ruler in his speech to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the state legislature, the Congress members cheered by thumping on the desks.
