United Kingdom MPs will summon SpaceX founder Elon Musk before a parliamentary inquiry for involvement in the UK riots and the rise of false and harmful AI content, the Guardian reported.&nbsp;

Along with Musk, senior executives from Meta, which&nbsp;runs social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok are also expected to be summoned as part of a Commons Science and Technology Select Committee social media inquiry.

This comes after Italian President Sergio Mattarella rebuked Musk after he took to X and posted about Italian court rulings that had hindered Italy's right-wing government plans to process some asylum-seekers in Albania.&nbsp;

The first hearings are scheduled to take place in the new year, amid increasing concerns that UK online safety law risk has surged by rapidly advancing technology and the politicisation of platforms such as X.

Musk was disappointed and furious when he was not invited to a UK government international investment summit in September.&nbsp;

“I’d like to make up for that by inviting him to attend," Onwurah told the Guardian.&nbsp;

One wonders why she lost the election.

While I wrote here earlier that she is unlikely to win (link below), the 226 electoral votes she got against Donald Trump's 312 – the majority mark being 270 – is quite impressive for a late-start campaign.

That late start was indeed one of the key issues.

Even some Democrats must have felt that she leapfrogged the proper process – the Democratic primaries – and was thrust into the limelight when incumbent president and Democratic nominee Joe Biden pulled out after days of inner-party squabbles.

<h2>How the Democrats ruined it for Kamala Harris</h2>

If she were in the Democratic primaries, could her fate have been different?

That's a big if.&nbsp; 
 
Suppose Harris was on the ballot for primaries. Even while being the incumbent vice president, she would have had to criticise Biden, and by extension, her own government.&nbsp;

As it happened, there were no serious contenders against Biden since he formally announced his re-election bid.

His Democratic primary opponents: author Marianne Williamson, Representative Dean Phillips and Robert F Kennedy Jr, exited the race one way or the other.

RJF Jr, from the hallowed and mostly Democratic Kennedy family, was the only temporary jolt for the party machine. Having started as a Democratic contender, RFK Jr switched to independent and eventually pulled out, only to support Trump, and is being rewarded with a role in the upcoming Trump administration.

Biden had an impressive number of delegates going into the Democratic Party Convention in August.

But a lot happened in July.

It was a tight situation for Democrats when, having gone into election mode after Biden won the required delegates to be declared the presidential candidate at the convention, they realised the 81-year-old was not a good pick, after all.

Biden's endless gaffes, slips and falls made many question&nbsp;his physical and mental capabilities to run for the top office once again.

His fumbling and rambling answers during the presidential debate with Trump in June made him look weak.&nbsp;

And then, Democrats went into a tizzy, creating the unprecedented situation of pressurising a candidate, who had done one presidential debate with the opponent,&nbsp;to exit the race.

Media reports about Biden's failing health followed, and Democrat donors threatened to pull campaign cash if Biden didn't exit.

Despite issuing nice-looking health report cards and his own assurances that he's fit to run for office again, many Democrat voters were still not convinced.

Or so the party thought.

Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat dame and speaker emeritus, as well as other senior leaders including, reportedly, ex-president Barack Obama, tried to convince Biden to quit the race.

Eventually, he relented, but in hindsight, that was too late, too little.

<h2>Harris campaign: A dash towards defeat</h2>

While there were reports of a 'palace coup' in which Harris was already putting in place a team in case Biden decided not to run, the time left for a robust campaign was too little.

In what raised many eyebrows, Biden 'transferred' all the delegates he had amassed to Kamala and her running mate Tim Walz and the Democratic Convention named them the candidates in a&nbsp;&nbsp;'roll-call nomination.'

The whole thing was mocked widely, particularly in the right-wing media, who painted Harris (it seems successful) as an imposter.

Having a rather forgettable running mate in Walz didn't help matters either for Harris.&nbsp;

Her media blitzkrieg of unusual appearances at TV and web shows were seen by many as ambushes.

The host of Call Her Daddy, a rather non-political show, was criticised for having invited her as a guest.

Fox News ran a campaign on how Kamala didn't address an open press conference, instead choosing to do one-on-one interviews seen as stage-managed affairs.

And then, there were the 'word salads'.

Many of her answers to serious questions were rather convoluted, particularly America's support to Israel in its war against Hamas, and to Ukraine against Russia.

On the Israel question, it emerged that CBS 60 Minutes edited out parts of her interview – or re-recorded it &nbsp;– to make the answer more palatable.

Trump and his surrogates went to town to expose her on these.&nbsp;

Trump, whose track record is anti-war – not because of any noble ideal, but because he doesn't want to fight in or pay for wars where American interests are not directly under attack – criticised US funding to Ukraine's war efforts.

He kept on saying in campaign speeches that he is the only one who could end the wars.&nbsp;

Many uncommitted voters, part of the silent majority, appear to have believed him.

Arab- and Muslim-Americans were particularly riled by the Biden administration's failure to stop the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which was invaded by Israel after the October 7 terror attack by Hamas.

The Harris campaign's communication efforts were annoying at best and outrageous at worst.

They couldn't advise her not to laugh out loud so much.

That led to 'cackling Kamala' jokes and memes, which Trump and his supporters exploited to the hilt.

There were gems like the advert appearing to suggest women reject Black men if they are not voting Democrat.

In their speeches for Harris addressed to African Americans, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle appeared to come across as condescending.

It was like, here are some entitled African-American leaders telling the Blacks how to live their lives, do their jobs, and vote.

That may have flipped many Blacks to vote for Trump.

On the economy, she appeared out of touch with the cost of living reality of middle-class and working-class Americans, despite insisting on all possible occasions that she comes from a middle-class background.

As practically the immigration tzar of the Biden administration, Harris had not much to boast of.

Many Latin American voters, it appears, may have voted for Trump because they also share the same worries and fears about migration from lawless lands in the continent as much as the white majority who Trump considers his base.

Trump succeeded in making Harris look weak on illegal migration from the southern border, as caravans of asylum seekers poured in.

That leaves us with women and young voters.&nbsp;

Quite stunningly, it emerged as per exit polls that fewer women voted for Harris than they did for Biden in 2020.

Abortion, the main issue Democrats thought would galvanise women towards Harris, did not work.

Neither did Harris' efforts to paint Trump as a dictator and anti-woman.

It might seem improbable, but Trump's escape from an assassination attempt, and his non-committal stance on banning Chinese-owned TikTok may have drawn more youngsters to him.

The TikTok ban move by the Biden administration was a risky one politically. The Democrats didn't understand how much American kids loved the short video-sharing platform. For them, it was a form of communication and self-expression for a generation.

While these may not be the only reasons, it is clear that Trump was preferred over Harris by many in Gen Z and millennials.&nbsp;

Also, note that there was an effort ahead of the Democratic primary to put 'uncommitted' as an option.

This means many of the Democratic voters were not ready for Biden.

It is quite possible that some of them may have voted for Trump.

In summary, while much of the reasons for her defeat had to do with circumstances, Harris didn't help her own campaign.

Now as per custom, the vice president faces the ignominy of signing the document that will declare Trump as the next president after the joint Congress session on January 6, right on the fourth anniversary of the Capitol riots instigated by Trump in rejection of the 2020 election outcome.

Trump recognised early on that Democrats are the party of bans — gas-powered cars, menthol cigarettes, vapes, plastic straws and TikTok — and to let them own that draconian, anti-personal-choice space.”

The potential ban was driven by bipartisan national security concerns over China’s influence, and some of Trump’s advisors believe he could intervene to save the platform, a move which would mark a significant shift in US policy on TikTok.

The law targeting TikTok requires its Chinese owner, ByteDance, to divest by 19 January, just one day before Trump’s inauguration.

The incoming administration may also consider ByteDance’s earlier proposal, “Project Texas,” which would grant the US government significant control over TikTok’s operations, including its workforce, as a potential compromise to avoid a ban.

While the Joe Biden administration had rejected the proposal, TikTok owner ByteDance previously said that the offer was still on the table.

However, such a move would likely provoke resistance from national security hawks within Trump’s own party, including his pick for Secretary of State, Senator Marco Rubio, who has strongly advocated for a TikTok ban.

Lara Trump, the former TV producer married to Trump's son Eric, became the RNC co-chair in March, a crowning moment for the Trump takeover of his party.

Trump appealed to the overwhelming fears of the white majority about illegal immigration, disruption of the family unit through increasing rights for same-sex unions and transgenders, and perceived threat to deeply held Christian values in much of middle and southern America. As the final electoral results map shows, this helped him cut into the so-called blue states, essentially breaking the votes from north to south in the middle of America, leaving the Democratic contender Kamala Harris with only the more liberal states in the east and west coasts. While Democrats felt abortion was a major issue that would swing women against Trump, it appears that many women disagreed.

<h2>9. Knowing the pulse of working class on immigration, economy</h2>

By amplifying the concerns about slow job growth, illegal migration&nbsp;and urban blight, Trump was able to add more supporters from non-white communities too. Hispanics in the country were equally fearful of the migration caravans coming in from Latin America as much as the white majority. Because one, it disrupted their lives and exposed them to racist attacks. And two, illegal migrants were competition for them. Many Latinos who voted for Trump may have carefully considered these issues before making that decision. With the African American community too, there appears to have been a shift, albeit minor. Those Blacks who voted for Trump were basically doing a protest vote against the Democrats, who they felt appeared to lecture them. Every election season, leaders like Barack Obama and Michelle Obama appeal to the Black community, even as Democratic governments did not make their lives any better. At least that was the perception among the pro-Trump Blacks, who voted in hopes that any improvement in the economy under Trump would help them get jobs.

Trump supporters amplified his views and stances on various issues through TikTok as well as other social media apps.

Trump started Truth Social when his social media accounts, particularly Twitter under the old management, banned his accounts. Over the years, Twitter was taken over by Elon Musk, a 'free-speech absolutist' who did not squirm at any of the white supremacist conspiracies being peddled on the now-rechristened X. Contrary to market pundits' expectations, Truth Social took off massively as the platform to share pro-Trump and Conservative views. When Trump rejected a platform, he created his own.

Democrats underestimated the fact that half of the electorate was logged on to a non-legacy platform and getting their information from it. Towards the final lap of his campaign, Musk became an open supporter of Trump and addressed his rallies. For Musk, it was a desperate moment, as he feared Harris, if elected, would have folded up X. Add to this the legacy media's unwillingness to endorse Harris, Los Angeles Times and Washington Post being the most prominent examples.

Money speaks in American politics, and having a lot of it is helpful. Trump practically ran most of his campaign out of his own pocket, with the erstwhile mass donors like super PACs not emerging as key players unlike in past elections. Trump's wealth, fuelled mainly by the growth of Truth Social was listed in stock exchanges in March this year and helped bankroll a major part of his campaign, along with some super donors. Clearly, having the richest man in the world Elon Musk by his side may have helped things too.

Much more than anything Trump did, it was perhaps the disarray and disunity among Democrats and the often incoherent speeches of both its candidates – Biden and Harris – that probably led many undecided voters to cast their ballots in favour of Trump. 'Chaos' was a favourite word of Trump-bashing media during his presidency, but Democrats became the embodiment of that description this election season.

The first issue was Biden's insistence on seeking another term despite pressure from his own party, a stark contrast with his public appearances and statements that exposed the weak state of his mind and body.

When Kamala Harris was thrust into the campaign, the Democratic primaries had already chosen Biden as their candidate in the primaries. That she did not have to go through the pains of the primaries contest may have alienated even many Democrats, because, let's face it, it ain't fair.

In her short and sprightly campaign, Kamala appeared out of touch with the realities of middle-class America, even as she kept on saying she comes from such a family. Her record as a prosecutor who sent many Blacks to jail did not augur well for her campaign either.

A dozen Ontario boards and two private schools are suing these social media platforms, alleging they have harmed the mental health and well-being of children. Initially, four school boards- Toronto public, Toronto Catholic, Peel public, and Ottawa-Carleton public- filed their cases in March 2023 and sought $4.5 billion. However, the list of schools has now gone up to 14, a report by the Toronto Star on Thursday said. The updated list includes Dufferin-Peel Catholic, York Catholic, Trillium Lakelands, Ottawa Catholic, District School Board of Niagara, Simcoe County, Kawartha Pine Ridge and Rainy River boards, and private religious schools Holy Name of Mary College School, and Eitz Chaim day school. The cases filed against social media platforms As per the Toronto Star report, the 14 schools filed separate but similar cases in Ontario's Superior Court of Justice, alleging Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat rewired the way children "rewired the way children think, behave, and learn," that has cost them (schools) billions in staff supports and resources. "Snapchat opens directly to a camera — rather than a feed of content — and has no traditional public likes or comments," the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Meta (representing Facebook and Instagram), told the Toronto Star said that the company wanted to reassure every parent that "we have their interests at heart in the work we’re doing to provide teens with safe, supportive experiences.” Canada orders shutdown of TikTok's business in country The above developments came as Canada ordered TikTok's business in the country to be dissolved, citing national security risks, but added the government was not blocking Canadians' access to the short-video app or their ability to create content.
