Alex de Minuar beat Daniil Medvedev in the fourth-round match on the French Open 2024 edition on Monday (June 3). Medvedev made a promising start to the clash, however, lost the plot&nbsp;soon to allow Australia's de Minuar a comeback. Eventually, the Aussie youngster won 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 to stage a remarkable comeback and sprint ahead in the Roland Garros. With this, De Minuar -- who never went past the second round at the tournament before this year -- will now gear up for a riveting quarterfinal match, having improved his game significantly on clay.&nbsp;

Talking about the contest, it started on expected note as many had their money on Russian star Medvedev. The fifth-seed, and a six-time Grand Slam finalist, won the opening set 6-4. He looked in good touch. It seemed that former US Open champion would make it to the next round without dropping much sweat. However, his form dipped in the following sets; allowing de Minaur to make a comeback.

The 11th-ranked Australian made a fresh start in the second set and was quick to close it, winning 6-2.&nbsp;The script remained the same in the third set with de Minaur dominating proceedings with his serves and making Medvedev do all the hardyards for each and every point. As a result, the Russian was seen covering a lot of distance on the court and looked&nbsp;clueless. The latter won the third set 6-1. While Medvedev was determined to push the game to the final set and started with a lead in the penultimate one, he soon conceded the momentum to lose 3-6 and bow out.

With this, Medvedev's disappointing run at the Roland Garros continues. For de Minaur, he will now lock horns with either Alexander Zverev or Holger Rune in his second Slam quarterfinal and first since the 2020 US Open.

Novak Djokovic was not pleased with how officials at the French Open handled the proceedings after his third round match against Lorenzo Musetti ended at 3:07 am (0107 GMT) on Sunday (Jun 2) morning.

Novak Djokovic was not pleased with how officials at the French Open handled the proceedings after his third round match against Lorenzo Musetti ended at 3:07 am (0107 GMT) on Sunday (Jun 2) morning. Speaking after the match, the defending champion said "things could have been handled differently" by the Roland Garros officials as both players battled in the tough and cold conditions. "I don't want to get into this debate. I think certain things could have been handled differently," said Djokovic. "There is a certain beauty in winning the match at three in the morning if it was the last of the tournament, but this isn't the case," he added. The 24-time Grand Slam winner had to dig deep after being two sets to one down and starting at one of his earliest French Open exits in the last 15 years. Eventually, Djokovic used his experience and defeated Musetti 7-5, 6-7 (6/8), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in a clash which only started just before 10:45 pm (2045 GMT) on Saturday. "Physically, I really went to my limits to win this match. When you play rallies of more than 20 shots, at two in the morning.... Who plays at two in the morning?," said Djokovic. "We play few matches in our life at this time. The conditions were very heavy, it was very cold. You didn't have many free points behind your serve." The delay was caused as organisers squeezed in extra matches on the two main courts that have retractable roofs. The scheduling at this year's French Open has been thrown into a tizzy due to incessant rains as other courts that do not have a roof have seen matches get suspended. While Djokovic had to spend four hours and 29 minutes on the court to settle the business, the Grand Slam record for the latest finish remains with the Australian Open where Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis played a match until 4:34 am in 2008. At the US Open in New York, the latest finish was 2:50 am in 2022 when Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner. Meanwhile, Wimbledon operates an 11 pm curfew with the 2012 clash between Andy Murray and Baghdatis ending at a more gentle 11:02 pm. (With inputs from agencies)

After complaints from players regarding&nbsp;unruly behaviour of fans, French Open organisers have announced a&nbsp;ban on&nbsp;alcohol in the stands to prevent any further disruption from spectators at the ongoing 2024 edition.&nbsp;The move comes a day after Belgian star David Goffin alleged that a fan spat at him during his second-round match versus Alexander Zverev. Earlier, world number one&nbsp;and defending women's singles champion, Iga Swiatek, also complained of fans yelling between serves and highlighted how it affected her game during her thrilling three-set win&nbsp;in the second-round&nbsp;over Naomi Osaka.

In this regard, the tournament director Mauresmo said, as quoted by Reuters, "First of all, we are happy people are very enthusiastic about watching tennis and being part of the matches, showing feeling and emotions."

"But there are definitely steps which shouldn't go further. A few things have needed to be put in place. Alcohol was allowed until now in the stands, but that's over... If they exceed the limit, if they don't behave well or if they throw things at the players, that's it."

Talking about Swiatek-Osaka match, the fans enjoyed a great game between the two stars but their behaviour certainly wasn't well received by the world number one. Swiatek&nbsp;was visibly upset during the course of the match as&nbsp;a few fans&nbsp;at the Philippe-Chatrier&nbsp;kept shouting in between serves. This prompted&nbsp;the chair umpire to step in on multiple occasions, delaying&nbsp;the proceedings.

<h2>'The stakes are big and there's lot of money here to win'</h2>

After the game, Swiatek stated, "When you scream something during the rally or right before the return, it's really, really hard to be focused. This is serious for us, we're fighting our whole lives to be better and better and sometimes it's just hard to accept that."

"The stakes are big and there's lot of money here to win. Losing a few points may change a lot. Please, guys, if you can support us between the rallies but not during, that would be really, really amazing."

Ever since this year's French Open kicked off, fans' behaviour has made heads turn with many instances of disruptions from the stands being reported by players. A fan who spat at Goffin has&nbsp;not been identified. However, the organisers at the Roland Garros have come up with stricter measures -- including the ban on alcohol -- to allow the game to run smoothly without complaints from players.

French Open 2024: Organisers ban alcohol from stands following fans' unruly behaviour

Seventh seed Casper Ruud kept alive his hopes of reaching another French Open final by edging out unseeded Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6(5) 1-6 6-3 4-6 6-3 in a testing second-round clash on Thursday.

After his last two trips to Roland Garros ended in losses to Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the final, the 25-year-old Norwegian looked well primed to break his Grand Slam duck at the claycourt major by winning titles on the surface in Barcelona and Geneva.

But that wining form seemed to go missing slightly against a tricky opponent in the 24-year-old Davidovich Fokina, who stayed within touching distance in a high-octane contest, before Ruud stepped up his game to go through.

Ruud won a tight opening set in a tie break and wobbled in the second before getting back on track in the next, seeking to avenge his third-round defeat by the same opponent on the red dirt of Paris three years ago.

Just as he was dragged to five sets in that match, Ruud found himself in a dogfight as the relentless Davidovich Fokina levelled up the contest, but he sealed a crucial break to surge ahead 3-2 in the decider and held his nerve from there to win.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic entered the third round of ongoing French Open 2024 with straight-sets victory over&nbsp;Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena on Thursday (May 30). Djokovic beat Baena 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in second round to keep his quest for historic 25th grand slam on the course.

This is the 19th consecutive time that the Serbian has entered the last 32 at the Roland Garros. He'll next face Frenchman Gael Monfils or 30th seed Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the third round. The 37-year-old holds 19-0 record against Monfils and 4-1 against Musetti.

The first set against Baena was closely fought with Djokovic dropping his opening service game before slumping to 4-4. The 24-time grand slam winner, however, bounced back in style, winning 14 of the next 17 games to take the set 6-4.

"It was a difficult match against Roberto. He hit a lot of very good and precise shots," said Djokovic.

"The last game of the first set I played really well and started to play at a higher level. At the end of the match I was then playing very well."

<h2>Zverev ousts Goffin</h2>

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev, who effectively ended Rafael Nadal's French Open career in the first round, defeated Goffin 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 6-2.

Zverev arrived in Paris on the back of winning the Rome Open title and is the only player to reach the semi-finals of the last three French Open tournaments.

On Friday, a Berlin court will hear an appeal by Zverev against a fine for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

He received a 450,000-euro ($487,000) fine in October but appealed the ruling earlier this year, leading to a full trial.

The 27-year-old is not required to attend the proceedings and insisted on the eve of the tournament that he "believes in the German system".

On Thursday, he refused to further discuss the case.

"I have said everything before the tournament," he said.

After only nine singles matches were played after a Wednesday washout, 55 second round ties were scheduled on Thursday.

Amongst early winners were world number two Sabalenka who fired 27 winners past Japanese qualifier Moyuka Uchijima to win 6-2, 6-2.

Talking about Zverev's clash, the fourth-seed player, who ended Rafael Nadal's run in the first round earlier&nbsp;this week, was challenged in the opening set. The first set went into the tiebreaker where the German won 7-4 to take the set 7-6. Zverev, who is enjoying an eight-match winning streak after claiming the Rome title, will now lock horns with&nbsp;Italian Luciano Darderi or Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in the third round.

Meanwhile, Sabalenka dominated her opponent as she&nbsp;displayed&nbsp;a clinical show and ended the one-sided affair in a flash. The Belarusian player wasn't made to sweat hard for the win as she was in control for most parts, reflecting her form as the tournament slowly moves onto the business end.

"So I knew that no matter what the weather is going to be, I'm going to play my match. That's really helpful," Sabalenka further added.

World number two Jannik Sinner eased into the third round of the 2024 French Open&nbsp;on Wednesday (May 29), with a straight-set win over Frenchman Richard Gasquet on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The match lasted a little over two hours where Sinner won 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. The Italian is now just four wins away from becoming the world number one for the first time in his career. Meanwhile, US sensation Coco Gauff also entered the third round with a 6-3, 6-4 over Tamara Zidansek.&nbsp;

Talking about Sinner's clash, he seemed in control for most parts of the contest. However, he was seen struggling with his hip in the final set. Thus, Gasquet made him work hard for every point but the Australian Open champion eased past his opposition in 2 hours and 14 minutes. With rain leading to cancellations on other courts, the Sinner-Gasquet clash didn't see any rain break, thanks to the roof on Centre Court. The 22-year-old Sinner will now lock horns with Pavel Kotov of Russia, who defeated Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (5), 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) in the second round.

As the French Open announced stricter measures Thursday to clamp down on inappropriate fan behaviour, players had varying stances on a polarising issue with Iga Swiatek told by one rival "she cannot complain".&nbsp;

Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo said action would be taken to weed out troublemakers following complaints by Swiatek, the women's defending champion, and David Goffin.

"We're happy to see there's an atmosphere, emotions and that the spectators are there. However, we will be uncompromising with respect to the players and the game," said Mauresmo.&nbsp;

"If there's the slightest behaviour that oversteps the mark, it will be the exit," asserted Mauresmo, while acknowledging that "identifying the person is not always easy".

Swiatek scolded spectators in her on-court interview for making noise during several points of her tense second-round win over Naomi Osaka.

But Paula Badosa, who will face second seed Aryna Sabalenka in round three, suggested Swiatek has it better than most given her status as the world number one and a four-time Grand Slam winner.

Swiatek has not played on any court other than Philippe Chatrier or Suzanne Lenglen since her second-round match of the 2021 French Open.

"I think she cannot complain, because I played Court 8 and 9 and you can hear everything," said Spain's Badosa, the former world number two.

"Like, I can hear Suzanne Lenglen, Philippe Chatrier, Court 6, 7 during the points. I think she's very lucky she can play all the time on Philippe Chatrier and she's okay with that.&nbsp;

"But I don't mind. As I said, I played in small courts these days, and I was hearing so much noise. In that moment, I'm just so focused on myself and on my match that it doesn't really bother me."

Badosa recalled the 2020 and 2021 editions of the tournament, when fan capacity was reduced due to Covid-19 restrictions and matches at times were played in front of empty stands.&nbsp;

"Honestly, I like when the fans cheer and all this. I think I get pumped," she said.

"Look, we had a very tough situation years ago when we were playing without fans with the Covid situation, so now, for me, I'm so happy they're back and think they're very important for our sport."

<h2>- 'Quiet or super loud' -</h2>

Daniil Medvedev sympathised with Swiatek's frustration at being distracted by the crowd at key moments, pointing out the fine margins between winning and losing.

"If someone screams in your ear, your serve, you could double fault. That's as easy as that. That's not good," said Medvedev.

"Now what happens is that 95% of matches, tournaments, it's quiet. And then when suddenly you come to Roland Garros and it's not, it disturbs you, and it's a Grand Slam so you get more stress and it's not easy."

"There is no in between," he continued.

"It either should be quiet or super loud but all the time, and then we would get used to it, I would get used to it also, and we would not actually complain about it."

Goffin claimed he was spat at by a spectator as he defeated French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the opening round on Tuesday.

Mauresmo, a former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion, said there would be "no hesitation" to remove anyone caught throwing something at a player.

She said it would be at an umpire's discretion how to handle other disruptive spectators, but called for them to be sterner while announcing alcohol will now be prohibited in the stands.

"There will likely be situations when it comes down to judgement," said Mauresmo.

"Throwing something at a player, you're out. Expressing yourself during a point is a no-no, we're going to try and limit that as much as possible.&nbsp;

"The umpires have tighter, even more precise instructions on keeping the audience under control. It's part of the role of the umpire to manage that too."

French Open 2024: Organisers vow stricter measures after players complain of unruly fans

Defending champion Iga Swiatek was pushed to the brink by fellow four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka but secured a 7-6(1) 1-6 7-5 victory after saving a match point in a high-voltage second-round match at Roland Garros on Wednesday. In a clash worthy of a final between the current and former world number one, Swiatek showed the steely grit she possesses in abundance but has rarely needed at her favourite major, to extend her streak to 16 wins after triumphs in 2022 and 2023.

"It's hard to have any logical thoughts... it was really intense and on a really high level. I was in huge trouble in the third set but I managed somehow to win this match. I'm glad that I didn't give up," Swiatek told reporters.

"I honestly didn't believe I could win, because I would be pretty naive. But it didn't change the fact that I just tried to do work to play better. I actually managed to be more focused at the end of the match, which went pretty badly. "In first and second set I felt like I wasn't completely in the zone. When I was under the biggest pressure I was able to switch that and maybe that made the difference."

Swiatek's clay prowess makes her a firm favourite against anyone but the 22-year-old top seed, who entered the contest on the back of 13 wins and titles in Madrid and Rome, faced huge pressure and was a point away from dropping the first set.

In testing conditions under the roof on Philippe Chatrier, the powerful Osaka posed a litany of problems in one of her best matches since coming back this year from a maternity break but did not capitalise while up 40-30 at 5-4, hitting a shot long.

Three-times champion Swiatek raised her level and ran away with the opening set in the tiebreak but the Pole found herself trailing 4-0 in the next set as the 26-year-old Osaka shrugged off any disappointment to comfortably level the contest.

Osaka saved two break points to hold at the start of the decider and fired a sublime backhand crosscourt winner in the next game to pounce for a 2-0 lead, which the Japanese player extended on serve after another almighty battle.

A rattled Swiatek clawed her way back from 5-2 down and saved a match point before taking full advantage of late errors from a nervy Osaka's racket to complete a famous victory and avoid her earliest exit from the Grand Slam.

Defeat was a bitter blow for Osaka, who produced one of her most memorable performances on her least favourite surface after fully dedicating herself to it in the build-up to the major and left the main showcourt to a standing ovation from the crowd.

"The journey that she had. I'm happy she's back, because her tennis deserves to be on the biggest stages. She deserves to be there," Swiatek added. "It wasn't easy on her, but if she's going to play better and better, it means that she did some work to improve... She played amazing today. I have big respect for her coming back."

Defending champion Iga Swiatek survives almighty scare to pip Naomi Osaka in French Open thriller

Naomi Osaka lost to world number one Iga Swiatek in a thrilling third-round match at the 2024 French Open on Wednesday (May 29). Osaka was up against the Polish player and had a huge task to stop the defending champion Swiatek's run and lost the match 6-7 (1-7), 6-1, 5-7. The match lasted for nearly three hours as the winner was decided in the last set. Despite her loss, Osaka stated that she is 'proud' of herself for the fight she gave to Swiatek.

During the contest, Osaka put Swiatek under pressure on several occasions but still couldn't have the last laugh. Notably, she broke her opposition's serve five out of nine times. The Japanese player lost the opening set in a tiebreaker but came back strongly to win the second before leading in the final set. At 5-4, 40-30, Osaka was on the cusp of pulling off a huge win when Swiatek earned back-to-back service breaks to get the better of Osaka. Despite the loss, Osaka is proud of her performance&nbsp;and said that she has got better after returning to court post motherhood.

“You know I have my little book, right? In it today I just wrote: ‘I'm proud of you’,” Osaka said after the contest.

She further mentioned, "I think for me, like, saying that to myself, it gives me a lot of power, because ... sometimes I curse myself out in my head, and it's quite a negative feeling. I would just say I'm proud of the journey. Hopefully it will get more and more positive."

The 26-year-old admitted that the face-off versus Swiatek would be memorable due to the quality of the match and crowd support.

“(It was) probably the most fun match that I have played so far. It just felt really incredible, the atmosphere, and how fun I guess everyone in the crowd was having too. It was definitely very memorable for me,” Osaka added.

French Open 2024: Naomi Osaka 'proud' of herself despite narrow defeat vs Iga Swiatek

There was a lot of buzz around Rafael Nadal's first-round match in the 2024 French Open, held on Monday (May 27). Nadal returned to the Grand Slams after a long gap, his first-ever of the year, following a string of injuries. The Spaniard had a tough draw, facing Germany's Alexander Zverev. Despite putting up a fight, Nadal lost in straight sets&nbsp;3-6, 6-7, 3-6&nbsp;to fourth-seed&nbsp;Zverev at the Roland Garros. At 37, with several injury concerns, many believe Nadal has played his last at the Roland Garros although the Spanish player remained unclear about his future. Now, former world number two and Nadal's compatriot Alex Corretja revealed a recent chat with the 14-time French Open winner to shed light on his future.

Following Nadal's first-round exit, the question&nbsp;remains whether he will return to the French Open once (which he has dominated for almost two decades). In this regard, Corretja told Eurosport, "I spoke to him a couple of months ago and he was sure he wouldn't be back (at the French Open)."

He further opined,&nbsp;"But then I spoke to him a week ago, and he said to me it's the first time I've been practising here at Roland Garros that I feel no pain. He said he felt so good on the court and that his tennis is growing and doesn't see any reason why he can't come back at least one more time."

Will Rafael Nadal take part in 2025 French Open? Compatriot Alex Corretja reveals chat

Rafael Nadal lost his opening game in the 2024 French Open on Monday (May 27) to Germany's Alexander Zverev. The recently-recovered Nadal gave a tough fight but it wasn't enough as he lost&nbsp;3-6, 6-7, 3-6&nbsp;to fourth-seed&nbsp;Zverev at the Roland Garros. While many believed it was his last appearance at the prestigious clay-court tournament, Nadal remained mum on his future. However, the Spaniard dropped a big hint at missing the forthcoming Wimbledon in order to prepare&nbsp;for the Paris Olympics.

After the clash, Nadal said, "Looks difficult for me now to make the transition to grass &amp; having the Olympics to play on clay just after. I have to analyse but I don't think it would be smart after all the things that happened to my body."

Nadal's French Open first-round match was his first appearance in a Grand Slam event this year. He missed the Australian Open but returned for his favourite Roland Garros only to be eliminated in the opening round. After the match, he even spoke about whether this was his last appearance at the Roland Garros. In this regard, Nadal said, "It is difficult for me to talk. I don't know if it is the last time that I am going to be here in front of you. I'm not 100 per cent sure but if it's the last time, I enjoyed it."

Since 2023, Nadal has hardly played Grand Slam events due to constant injury (hip) concerns. Last year, he had hinted at 2024 being his last-ever season, hence, many believe he has played his last at the French Open. The legendary player has had a decorated career, winning 22 Grand Slams out of which 14 came in the French Open (most by any player in the clay-court tournament).

At present, Nadal will shift his focus on the Paris Olympics -- which kicks off on July 26 -- and is most likely to miss Wimbledon 2024 as a&nbsp;quick switch between clay and grass within a matter of days looks difficult for the 37-year-old.

Looks difficult: Rafael Nadal hints at skipping Wimbledon 2024 after first-round exit in French Open

In what was possibly his last dance at the hallowed clay court of Philippe Chatrier, 14-time French Open champion, Rafael Nadal bowed out of the first round after suffering a 3-6, 6-7, 3-6 defeat against fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev. The German brought his A-game from the beginning and broke Nadal on his maiden serve of the tournament to set the tone of the match and avenge the loss of the 2022 semifinal where he had to quit after suffering ankle ligament damage.&nbsp;

Zverev became only the third person after Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic to beat Nadal at the French Open. In total, it was just the fourth defeat in 116 matches for the Spaniard in Paris but the earliest one. Prior to Monday (May 27), Nadal had never failed to reach at least the fourth round in Paris.&nbsp;

"I needed something else. I was competitive but Sascha (Zverev) has been brilliant. There is a big percentage that I will not be back but I cannot be 100 per cent sure. I'm travelling well. The body is feeling better. Maybe in two months, I say it is enough. But it is something that I don't feel yet. I hope to be back on this court for the Olympics," said Nadal in the post-match interview.&nbsp;

Having fallen behind after the disappointing first game, Nadal did show signs of a comeback as he saved two set points at 3-5 but eventually gave up the opener on the third when he buried a loose forehand into the net.&nbsp;

<h2>Nadal's improved gameplay</h2>

During the second set, Nadal did break Zverev to lead 3-2 with the entire stadium reverberating with 'Rafa, Rafa' chants. However, the Spaniard could not capitalise and was broken to love in the 10th game as he served for the set.&nbsp;

The likes of Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek were in the crowd to witness Nadal conjure up his magic on the clay court but the 22-time major winner looked comfortably below his best.&nbsp;

In the tie-break,&nbsp;Nadal saved one set point but Zverev claimed the set when the Spaniard netted a service return.

In what was possibly his last dance at the hallowed clay court of Philippe Chatrier, 14-time French Open champion, Rafael Nadal bowed out of the first round after suffering a 3-6, 6-7, 3-6 defeat against fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev. The German brought his A-game from the beginning and broke Nadal on his maiden serve of the tournament to set the tone of the match and avenge the loss of the 2022 semifinal where he had to quit after suffering ankle ligament damage. Zverev became only the third person after Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic to beat Nadal at the French Open. In total, it was just the fourth defeat in 116 matches for the Spaniard in Paris but the earliest one. Prior to Monday (May 27), Nadal had never failed to reach at least the fourth round in Paris. "I needed something else. I was competitive but Sascha (Zverev) has been brilliant. There is a big percentage that I will not be back but I cannot be 100 per cent sure. I'm travelling well. The body is feeling better. Maybe in two months, I say it is enough. But it is something that I don't feel yet. I hope to be back on this court for the Olympics," said Nadal in the post-match interview. Having fallen behind after the disappointing first game, Nadal did show signs of a comeback as he saved two set points at 3-5 but eventually gave up the opener on the third when he buried a loose forehand into the net. However, the Spaniard could not capitalise and was broken to love in the 10th game as he served for the set. The likes of Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek were in the crowd to witness Nadal conjure up his magic on the clay court but the 22-time major winner looked comfortably below his best. Ninth-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas went past Marton Fucsovics in his opening game of the French Open 2024 edition on Monday (May 27). The Greek star eased to the next round with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 6-1 win over the Hungarian player under the new roof on Court Suzanne Lenglen on a rain-marred Day 2 of the Roland Garros.&nbsp;

Talking about the contest, Tsitsipas -- who confirmed getting back with Spanish player and girlfriend Paula Badosa -- didn't have an easy start. His Hungarian opponent was up for the challenge as the first set was stretched considerably. It went into the tie-breaker with the 25-year-old Tsitsipas emerging on top 7-6 (9-7) in what was a riveting opening set. The Greek player endured some tough moments in the following set as well but wrapped it up relatively easily, winning 6-4 before taking the third set without dropping much sweat (6-1).

French Open 2024: Ninth-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas goes past Marton Fucsovics in opening round

In what could be his last French Open, 14-times champion Rafa Nadal faces a tough task to avoid it all ending in a first-round exit when he plays Alexander Zverev on Monday.

Nadal had already announced that this could be the final season of his career but on his arrival in Paris the Spaniard said he could not yet be sure that he was ready to close the door on Roland Garros.

After missing last year's tournament through injury, Nadal will be keen to make the most of his return, as will his fans, but standing in his way is fourth-seeded German Zverev, fresh from his triumph at the Italian Open.

"It's not ideal the first match, because I feel competitive to have this match later in the tournament, but it's how it is," Nadal said. "I need to be ready since the beginning. Let's see."

The meeting will bring back contrasting memories for both players of the last time they met, in a French Open semi-final in 2022, when Nadal went on to win yet another title in Paris, the last of his 22 Grand Slam victories.

Zverev was forced to retire from that match with an ankle injury. He underwent surgery and ended up missing the rest of the season with another injury, but he returned last year to reach his third consecutive French Open semi-final.

With some of the other top players such as Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, struggling with injuries of late, this could be Zverev's chance to finally win a Grand Slam.

The German might not have wanted to meet Nadal so early in the tournament but he was happy to have the chance to take him on again.

"I really wanted to play him here. I did not want to play him in the first round. I wanted to play him in the semi-finals, finals, a later stage of the tournament," Zverev said. "But at the end of the day, he's not seeded, it is how it is, and I think we're both prepared for a tough battle."

World number two Sinner makes his return to action after sitting out the Italian Open following a hip injury at the Madrid Open, and takes on American Christopher Eubanks.

Iga Swiatek begins her title defence against French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean, and the Polish world number one comes to Paris on the back of title wins in Madrid and Rome.

American third seed Coco Gauff plays 21-year-old qualifier Julia Avdeeva, with the Russian making her Grand Slam debut.

Rafael Nadal faces Zverev in tough opener in what could be his last French Open

Andy Murray said he was "proud" after his French Open career ended Sunday with a first-round defeat by 2015 champion and fellow three-time Grand Slam title winner Stan Wawrinka.

Murray, the runner-up at Roland Garros in 2016, lost 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in his last singles appearance at the tournament before retiring later this year.

The 37-year-old had already announced he plans to call time on his career in the summer with Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics as the two high-profile events left on his schedule.

On Sunday, he left to a standing ovation from the crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier and Murray returned the gesture by applauding the fans.

As well as his run to the final eight years ago, when he lost to Novak Djokovic, Murray reached the semi-finals four times and the last eight twice.

"Most players would sign up for the results I've had here," he said. "In a different time maybe the results would have been a bit different.

"I had great memories... It was not an easy surface for me. But I always showed up and put in some strong performances, considering. It was a good run here over the years."

It was Murray's first appearance at Roland Garros since losing to Wawrinka in the first round four years ago and only his second since a dramatic semi-final defeat by the Swiss in 2017.

The Briton has struggled in recent months with an ankle injury but opted not to have surgery in a bid to play a last French Open.

"Sometimes now when you do have an injury it just takes a little bit longer for your body to get used to the intensity of the matches and stuff," added Murray, who said he would next play at the grass-court event in Stuttgart, which starts the week after Roland Garros.

"My body isn't what it was, you know, 10 years ago. I'm fully aware of that.

"It takes a lot of time and effort to get it in a position to go out there and compete.

"It's not always perfect. But it is what it is and I still enjoy giving a go and trying to get myself out there and be as competitive as possible."

Wawrinka, who has now defeated Murray three times in four meetings in Paris, described his opponent as an "amazing champion".

The Swiss veteran goes on to face either Cameron Norrie of Britain or Russia's Pavel Kotov for a place in the third round.

Wawrinka became only the third man over the age of 39 to win a match at the French Open since 1980.

"He achieved everything a player could achieve in tennis," Wawrinka said of Murray, against whom he trails 13-10 in their head-to-head record. "He's an amazing champion, amazing guy. I think he has a lot of fans, a lot of people start playing tennis because of him. I respect him a lot.

"I enjoyed playing him a lot last 20 years. We played so many times, so many big battles. Hopefully he's going to keep going a little bit."

World number three and reigning Wimbledon champion Alcaraz eased to a 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 win over America's J.J. Wolf, the 107th-ranked player who entered the main draw as a 'lucky loser' from qualifying.

Alcaraz, 21, who made the semi-finals in 2023 where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic, took his first-round record at the majors to 13-0.

Alcaraz showed no sign of suffering from the right arm injury which sidelined him from the Rome Open as he coasted to victory on the back of 27 winners and nine breaks of serve.

Later Sunday, Stan Wawrinka, the 39-year-old 2015 champion, and 2016 runner-up Andy Murray meet for the 23rd time, a rivalry which has included two semi-final clashes in Paris.

Murray is playing his final season on tour but whether or not 14-time champion Rafael Nadal joins him in retirement later this year remains to be seen.

Nadal, who will be 38 on June 3, revealed Saturday that he hasn't committed himself to retiring and wanted to "100% keep the door open".

He missed the tournament in 2023 with injury while his 2024 appearance may be brief after he was drawn to face fourth-ranked Alexander Zverev on Monday.

"It's a big, big chance that this is going to be my last Roland Garros, but if I have to tell you it's 100% my last Roland Garros, sorry, but I will not," Nadal said.

The Spanish legend has racked up 112 wins in 115 matches at the tournament since his title-winning 2005 debut when he was just 19.

He has 22 Grand Slam titles -- second only to Djokovic's 24 on the all-time men's list -- but his career has been plagued by injuries.

Rafael Nadal will bring down the curtain on his 19-year French Open career with the likelihood of adding to his 14 titles greatly diminished before he leaves behind a record and reputation unlikely ever to be matched.

The great Spaniard, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, won his first title at Roland Garros as a teenager in 2005. A week on Monday, he will celebrate his 38th birthday.

A former world number one, who is now at 276 in the world, Nadal has only played 15 matches since January last year as a hip injury and then a muscle tear were added to a depressing litany of physical ailments which have forced him to miss 12 Grand Slam tournaments in his career.

Unseeded this year, his farewell to arms may be brief after he was drawn to face world number four Alexander Zverev in the first round with the match set for Monday.

He is also held in remarkably high esteem.

Tennis: Clay King Rafael Nadal gears up for emotional French Open farewell

Novak Djokovic took a step closer to ending his title drought in 2024 after beating Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 7-5 6-1 on Thursday to reach the Geneva Open semi-finals. The world number one, who accepted a late wildcard to compete at the ATP 250 tournament ahead of defending his French Open title, got himself out of a hole as he saved four set points from 0-40 down in the 10th game before breaking his opponent for a 6-5 lead. He then served out the first set.

The 37-year-old Serb kept the momentum going as he broke serve three times in the second set, lasting just 25 minutes,&nbsp;to prevail over the world number 27. "Great win. I thought that the first set could have gone his way easily because I think he was the better player for most of the first set," said Djokovic, who has been stuck on 98 singles titles since triumphing at last year's ATP Finals.

The 37-year-old Serb kept the momentum going as he broke serve three times in the second set, lasting just 25 minutes, to prevail over the world number 27. "Great win. I thought that the first set could have gone his way easily because I think he was the better player for most of the first set," said Djokovic, who has been stuck on 98 singles titles since triumphing at last year's ATP Finals. World number five Jessica Pegula has pulled out of the French Open as she continues to focus on her recovery from injuries, the American tennis player said on Wednesday. The 30-year-old said earlier this month she was unsure of her participation in Paris after shaking off an injury that derailed her claycourt season.

Pegula last competed in the Billie Jean King Cup in April. She missed the Middle East swing in February due to a neck issue.

"Unfortunately pulling out of Roland Garros this year," Pegula said in a post on Instagram. "I'm just about back to practicing normal haven't had any issues for weeks... If I had another 5-7 days I would have been there 100%. "So I will definitely be back for a full grass season and the rest of the summer and grinding out the rest of the year. Gotta get that match count up."

World number one Novak Djokovic is hoping to get a few matches under his belt at this week's Geneva Open ahead of his title defence at Roland Garros, after recovering from a freak injury he suffered this month.

Djokovic has struggled this season and has yet to win a tournament in 2024. The 24-times Grand Slam champion's preparations for the French Open have been far from ideal, beginning with a loss to Casper Ruud in the Monte Carlo semi-finals.

He then opted to skip the Madrid Open before losing in the third round of the Italian Open, two days after he was hit on the head by a fan's water bottle while signing autographs. The Serbian, who said he felt out of sorts during his 6-2 6-3 loss to Alejandro Tabilo, told reporters on Tuesday: "The head is good. All is well. I've trained for over a week and I'm feeling fine."

"I've dedicated quite a bit of time with my new fitness coach to build the endurance, to build physical strength and capabilities that I need in order to play a best-of-five Grand Slam on the physically most demanding surface, which is clay."

"So, hopefully, I'm going to get more than one match here in Geneva, that's the goal and then let's see what happens in Paris."

In his first match in Geneva on Wednesday, Djokovic will face German Yannick Hanfmann, who beat three-times Grand Slam champion Andy Murray earlier in the tournament.

"The reason why I chose to come and play is because I feel like, at this moment, there is no better practice for me than match play," Djokovic said. "I feel like I need more matches, even if it's one match, two matches, three, four hopefully. It's good for me, because that's the way for me to try to find that kind of form that I need for Roland Garros."

Tennis: World number one Novak Djokovic eager to regain form ahead of French Open defence

The women's tennis tour (WTA) on Monday announced "a multi-year partnership" with the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund (PIF), emulating a deal made by the men's tour (ATP) in February.

The WTA said in a statement that it shared with PIF an "ambition to grow women's professional tennis and inspire more women and girls around the world to take up the game."

"We look forward to sharing the journey of our talented players across the season, as we continue to grow the sport, creating more fans of tennis and inspiring more young people to take up the game," said Marina Storti, CEO of WTA Ventures, in the joint statement.

PIF will become the "first-ever naming partner of the WTA Rankings".

Women’s tennis signs multi-year partnership with Saudi PIF in historic move

Alexander Zverev warmed up for the French Open by winning his sixth Masters title when he beat first-time finalist Nicolas Jarry 6-4 7-5 in the Italian Open showpiece on Sunday. It was a second title in Rome for Zverev, having won his first in 2017 when he was 20, and his first trophy since he broke his ankle in the French Open semi-finals in 2022.

The 27-year-old will also climb to fourth in the rankings as he slowly returns to his best ahead of Roland Garros. "Obviously winning my first ever (Masters title) here in Rome and winning my first after my injury also in Rome, so Rome is a very special place for me. It is a very, very special week," third seed Zverev said.

Chilean Jarry, who had beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul to reach the final, could not break Zverev after the German won 95% of his first-serve points. The aggressive number 21 seed Jarry had relied on his big serve to reach the final but Zverev was up to the task, absorbing the pressure and committing few unforced errors.

However, Jarry managed to save three match points before Zverev finally clinched victory in Rome, where he dropped only one set in the tournament. "He is playing huge and you can see by the players he has beaten here this week, (he is) playing incredible&nbsp;tennis," Zverev said of Jarry. "I told him if he continues to play like that he will have many chances at this level. Today I am extremely happy to be the winner."

Germany's Alexander Zverev claims sixth Masters title at Italian Open

Germany's Alexander Zverev equalled compatriot Boris Becker's record by reaching an 11th Masters final on Friday when he ended the Rome Open giant-killing run of Alejandro Tabilo to set-up a title showdown against Nicolas Jarry.

World number five Zverev, who lifted the Rome trophy in 2017, battled back to see off Tabilo 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to tie Becker's record for the most Masters finals by a German since the series began in 1990.

Third seed Zverev looked like he would become the latest high-ranking victim of an unusual men's tournament when he was battered in a sensational opening set.

But Zverev battled back and after coming through a tight second set his class eventually showed, making the final at the Foro Italico for the third time.

"I was just hanging on in the second set. I brought my energy up. I was really just hanging on and waiting and the patience was kind of good today," Zverev said on court.

"He hit me off the court in the first set and I did not play well at all, but he was a big reason why. He gave me no rhythm and I am happy I turned it around in the tie-break and ran away in the third set."

Tabilo's run to the last four had become one of the stories of a tournament which was shed of a host of top men players either to pre-event injuries or shock early eliminations.

The 26-year-old Chilean had defeated world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round and the 32nd-ranked player showed little fear of Zverev until he began to play more passively in the second set tie-break.

<h2>- Jarry ends Paul's hopes -</h2>

Zverev will be a big favourite to win Sunday's championship match when he faces Tabilo's countryman Jarry, who won his first Masters 1000 semi-final against Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3.

Jarry is guaranteed to move up to a career-high number 17 in the world rankings after reaching his seventh ATP final.

The 28-year-old is hunting his fourth tour title after coming through a more prosaic encounter with American Paul than Zverev had with Tabilo.

Jarry took the first set after breaking in game eight.

Paul fought back and won a more eventful second set, but instead of pushing on he missed the chance to become the first American to reach the Rome final since Andre Agassi 22 years ago.

Jarry sealed the deal after wasting four match points in the most dramatic game of the contest, setting up the biggest match of his career.

"I was able to come back with my tennis in the third set, play very aggressive. To finish the match is never easy but I made it through and it's an amazing feeling," said Jarry. "I think that in those moments I play my best tennis, when I have to give it all and I go for it."

Italian fans will have something to cheer for on Sunday after Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini reached the women's doubles final where they will face Coco Gauff and Erin Routliffe.

Home supporters were denied the chance to see world number two Jannik Sinner and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini who pulled out before the event started.

Chilean 21st seed Nicolas Jarry fought back from a set down to beat world number eight Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-6 7-5 6-4 and reach the Italian Open semi-finals on Thursday. Jarry, who fought off 11 of 13 break points faced in the match, will next play American 14th seed Tommy Paul on Friday in his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final.

Another Chilean, Alejandro Tabilo will take on German third seed Alexander Zverev the other semi-final. Two Chileans will appear in the semi-finals of an ATP 1000 event for the first time since the format was introduced in 1990.

Jarry was tested in the opening set by Greece's sixth seed but gained his momentum in the second. The 28-year-old won five consecutive points at 3-3 as he bounced back from 0-40, before wrapping up the second set by winning nine of the final 11 points.

Jarry then broke Tsitsipas in the decider for a 5-4 lead to eventually cruise into the last four. "Beating Stef on clay is a good achievement. Extremely happy for my fight today and how I played. How I maintained myself even down a set, down a break," Jarry said.

"I just kept trying to find different ways to have chances on his serve. I knew I was playing good. "I had to adjust some things on the backhand so he didn't push me back. That's why he played so good. I was able to do those two things... It was a good fight tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I can be stronger."

Chile's Nicolas Jarry takes down Stefanos Tsitsipas to face Paul for spot in Rome final

Iga Swiatek won her 11th straight clay-court match on Thursday as the top seed moved closer to another record with a 6-4, 6-3 semi-final defeat of Coco Gauff at the Rome Open, after Tommy Paul earlier survived a chaotic ending to emerge victorious from his quarter-final encounter with Hubert Hurkacz.

World number one Swiatek now stands one victory away from duplicating the Madrid-Rome clay trophy double achieved by Serena Williams 11 years ago.

The 22-year-old Pole defeated third-seed Gauff for the 10th time in their 11 encounters, with her only loss in the series coming last summer in a Cincinnati semi-final.

Swiatek, a four-time Grand Slam winner due to defend her Roland Garros title starting a week from Sunday, will play the Saturday Rome final against either second-seed Aryna Sabalenka or American Danielle Collins.

The top seed spent one and three-quarter hours in dispatching Gauff, the reigning US Open champion.

"I'm not thinking about statistics or history," she said after the victory. "I'm just playing day by day.

On the men's side, American Paul reached a clay court semi-final for the first time in his career with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 upset of Hurkacz.

The 14th seed is the first American to reach the final four at the Foro Italico since Reilly Opelka in 2021.

The momentum-shifting quarter-final came down to the wire, with a 15-minute final game capping off nearly two and three-quarter hours on court.

Paul finally came through on his fourth match point as Poland's Hurkacz sent a return long.

The match featured 13 breaks of serve, with Paul advancing with 29 winners and 41 unforced errors; and Hurkacz having 22 and 44 respectively.

"I started well but it got away from me in the second and start of the third," Paul said. "I had to stick around in the match. "I found the energy to get it going again. I was hitting my forehand bigger and with more intensity because Hubii can really crush the ball."

Paul will wait for an opponent from sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Chile's Nicolas Jarry.

Hurkacz, who knocked Rafa Nadal out in the Rome second round, was unable to get his massive serve up to speed as he faced Paul, winner over defending champion Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round.

Hurkacz won the clay title in Estoril last month and suffered only his third loss on clay this spring.

Tennis: World no. 1 Iga Swiatek downs Coco Gauff in Rome Open semis

Alexander Zverev reached his 18th Masters semi-final in Rome on Wednesday but only after a worrying fall which sparked memories of the horror injury he suffered at the French Open two years ago. The world number five from Germany defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-3 to set up a last-four duel with Alejandro Tabilo, the Chilean journeyman who had stunned Novak Djokovic earlier in the tournament.

Zverev's moment of concern came in just the third game on centre court at the Foro Italico when he fell on the clay and landed on his front. The 2017 champion cut his left wrist and a finger in the tumble and required treatment from the tournament physio before he continued the match.

Zverev, 27, suffered a serious ankle injury at the 2022 French Open after falling on the clay of Roland Garros during his semi-final against Rafael Nadal and missed the rest of the season. On Wednesday, however, he was able to dust himself down to defeat Fritz in 90 minutes, firing 20 winners with six aces and not facing a single break point.

"Taylor has been one of the best players on clay this year. To have a win like that is great for me, especially after the fall," Zverev said.&nbsp; "I still have a little bit of pain, so once the adrenaline settles I'm going to check out tomorrow what it is. But definitely happy with the win."

Zverev is the highest-ranked man left in the event after Daniil Medvedev's elimination on Tuesday. As well as Djokovic's exit, Italian world number two Jannik Sinner and third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz both dropped out injured before the tournament.

Holger Rune, who lost last year's final to Medvedev, Madrid champion Andrey Rublev -- ranked sixth in the world -- and beaten finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime have also been eliminated.

Chile's Tabilo will play his first-ever Masters 1000 semi-final at the age of 26, after seeing off unseeded Zhang Zhizhen of China 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 26 minutes.

"I just can't believe it right now, still trying to soak this in... Definitely an unforgettable two weeks for me," said a delighted Tabilo, the 29th seed who knocked out top-ranked Djokovic on Sunday. "It's definitely the best tennis of my life right now, trying to keep a poker face there because inside I'm just so nervous, every time trying to close out the match gets a little bit tighter."

Tabilo, in fact, had far less trouble on Wednesday than he did in his battle with Karen Khachanov in the previous round, not facing a single break point on his way to the biggest match of his career at the last major tournament before the French Open.

Women's second seed Aryna Sabalenka needed just an hour and 13 minutes to see off Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-4 on her way to the semis, improving her record against her Latvian opponent to three wins and no defeats. Sabalenka will next take on Miami Open winner Danielle Collins who eased past Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-3.

"With this amazing atmosphere and with this amazing support... that's why I'm super motivated here and that's why I always say that this is the dream tournament for me to win," said Sabalenka.

The 26-year-old could get a rematch of the Madrid final which she lost in dramatic fashion to world number one Iga Swiatek earlier this month. Sabalenka, who has won the two most recent Australian Opens, was in a different class to Ostapenko, a former French Open winner, who could do nothing in the face of some punishing hitting.

Rome is the first time since the 2013 French Open that the top three women have reached the last four of a WTA event of 250 level or higher, with Swiatek and world number three Coco Gauff in the other semi-final on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Collins, ranked 15 in the world, announced in January that this would be her final season on the tour before retiring.&nbsp; She now has 19 wins in her last 20 matches, dating back to the start of Miami where she captured her first WTA 1000 title.&nbsp;

Alexander Zverev beats injury scare to reach Rome semis as Danielle Collins sets up Aryna Sabalenka clash

American Coco Gauff has accumulated 35 double faults in three matches at the Italian Open, but the world number three said the technical changes to her serve only need time to settle. A potent serve can be a powerful weapon in&nbsp;tennis, but U.S. Open champion Gauff has struggled with her delivery in the clay swing, averaging almost 10 double faults in the five matches that she played on the slower surface ahead of Rome.

Gauff sent down 11 more in Monday's 5-7 6-4 6-1 win over Paula Badosa, but the 20-year-old said after making the quarter-finals that she was already seeing some improvements ahead of the French Open which starts on May 26.

"I'm going big on the first serve, so I know I'm probably going to miss more. It's just finding the balance of going big but also knowing when to slow down just to get the serve in," Gauff, the 2022 Roland Garros runner-up, told reporters.

"I bet on myself to continue to go big. I know when I go big and my serve goes in it's dangerous. Even though this tournament I want to win, I'm trying to think long-term. I don't want to lose the 120 (mph) serve by not going for it."

World number two Aryna Sabalenka famously struggled with her serve over the last few years before a stint with a biomechanics trainer turned her weakness into a weapon, which she deployed to great effect en route to winning two Australian Opens titles.

Gauff, who is coached by Brad Gilbert and Jean-Christophe Faurel, said she was also trying to make technical tweaks.

"It's tough to do in-season and in-tournament," she said. "I feel from the night before my last match to now, it's better. It's only been two days. I'm trying."

The victory made the 26-year-old Tabilo -- who won a Challenger Tour tournament two weeks ago -- the first Chilean in 17 years to beat a world number one since Fernando Gonzalez beat Roger Federer at the ATP Finals in 2007.

The result also means Djokovic -- who made a double fault on match point -- has failed to reach a single final in 2024 and has played only six matches on clay in the build-up to the French Open.

Chile's Tabilo stuns tennis world with shock win over Novak Djokovic in Italian Open third round

Novak Djokovic's shock exit from the Italian Open on Sunday could prove to be a decisive moment in the race for the world number one spot, as the top-ranked Serb prepares for his French Open title defence with Jannik Sinner poised to leapfrog him. Two days after accidentally being hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs in Rome, an off-colour Djokovic crashed to his earliest defeat in the tournament he has won six times after a 6-2 6-3 third-round thrashing by Alejandro Tabilo.

Djokovic will remain 1,090 points ahead of Sinner before the year's second Grand Slam begins on May 26, but the 36-year-old is on shaky ground as he will be defending 2,000 points in Paris and winning the title may not be enough to stay on top.

"It was a very unfortunate, unlucky situation ... that guy leaned over the fence, and the bottle dropped from his rucksack and landed on my head," Djokovic said, reflecting on the freak accident that hurt his chances to pull away from Sinner. "It was unexpected. I wasn't even looking up. Then I felt a very strong hit in the head. That has really impacted me. After that I got the medical care. Been through half-an-hour, an hour of nausea, dizziness, blood,&nbsp;a lot of different things."

With only six matches on clay, Djokovic will be slightly undercooked as he heads to Paris in search of a record 25th Grand Slam title. Even if Djokovic goes on to win at Roland Garros, Sinner could rise to world number one for the first time on June 10 by reaching the championship match.

The 22-year-old Sinner, who skipped Rome with a hip injury sustained in Madrid, will be defending only 45 points in Paris but faces a race against time to be fully fit. Djokovic had endured a bumpy season even before the bottle incident as the Serb's bid for a record-extending 11th title at the Australian Open was snuffed out by eventual champion Sinner in the semi-finals.

He then fell to lucky loser Luca Nardi in the Indian Wells third round before being outlasted by Casper Ruud in the Monte Carlo semi-finals, sparking fear among fans that his aura of invincibility was slowly fading.

Despite winning three out of the four Grand Slams last year, Djokovic split with long-time coach Goran Ivanisevic and fitness coach Marco Panichi in a bid to rediscover his best form ahead of Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics.

Talk of terminal decline may still be premature and Djokovic could silence critics by winning a fourth title at the claycourt major, but he admitted things must improve fast after reaching May without a trophy for the first time since 2018. "Everything needs to be better in order for me to have at least a chance to win it," said Djokovic.

Djokovic's bid for a record-extending 41st Masters 1000 title was ended in just over an hour by Chilean Tabilo, who is ranked 32nd in the world and claimed his first win over a top-10 opponent, 6-2, 6-3. The 24-time Grand Slam winner said that his subdued performance on a court where he has won six titles might have been due to the blow suffered while greeting fans on Friday night. He had initially laughed off being accidentally struck on the head by a hard bottle following his straightforward second-round win over Corentin Moutet, by wearing a cycling crash helmet to training on Saturday morning. "I don't know, to be honest. I have to check that. Training was different. I was going for kind of easy training yesterday. I didn't feel anything, but I also didn't feel the same," Djokovic told reporters. "Today under high stress, it was quite bad -- not in terms of pain, but in terms of this balance. Just no coordination. Completely different player from what it was two nights ago." Djokovic also said that he would have scans to "see what's going on" before the French Open after admitting to having headaches, nausea and dizziness on Friday night. "The way I felt on the court today was just completely like a different player entered into my shoes," added Djokovic. "It's a bit concerning." Djokovic's early elimination is a blow for the last major tournament before Roland Garros later this month, which started without Italian world number two Jannik Sinner and third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz. But Tabilo was a worthy winner after tearing into his superstar opponent, racing into a 4-0 lead in the first set in less than 20 minutes, breaking Djokovic twice and surprising the Serb with a series of impressive winners. The Chilean claimed the opening set in half an hour, leaving fans sat under the baking Rome sunshine stunned at the off-form Djokovic. He immediately broke Djokovic for the third time in the opening game of the second set and went on to claim the biggest win of his career in remarkable style, hitting 22 winners, making just four unforced errors and not facing a single break point.
