Surya had earlier posted a video on X, in which he “solicited votes on the ground of religion," the&nbsp;Chief Electoral Officer,&nbsp;Karnataka&nbsp;said in an X post. Bengaluru South is a crucial seat for&nbsp;BJP&nbsp;where Surya&nbsp;is pitted&nbsp;against Congress's Sowmya Reddy.

“We the BJP voters are 80 per cent but only 20 per cent come out and vote. Congress’ voters are 20 per cent but they come out and vote 80 per cent. This is the ground reality at the polling booths in most cases. Every single vote of yours matters. Please come out and vote because if you are not voting, Congress’ 20 per cent is definitely voting,” Tejasvi said.

Earlier, the BJP leader issued a scathing attack on Congress, the main opposition party, and declared it may not win more than 30 seats in the&nbsp;Lok Sabha elections.

"Congress party has become absolutely frustrated. Survey after survey shows that it may not win more than 30 seats... The more personal attacks and baseless allegations they make against the PM, history has shown that the Prime Minister has only gotten stronger and the BJP has only gotten more popular," he said.

Before Bengaluru South goes to polls on April 26 during phase-2 of voting, WION interviewed serving Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya. Below are the excerpts:

What makes your constituency Bengaluru South a BJP bastion?

Bengaluru South epitomises a well-educated, cosmopolitan electorate that actively engages with the city's development.&nbsp;Perhaps that’s why they consistently choose BJP.

Leadership is tested not in times of abundance but in times of crisis. The people of Bengaluru have seen me work in the last 5 years and noticed the significant strides in Bengaluru South during my first term.

How confident are you about&nbsp;winning again?

In my very first year as MP, we were met with the challenge of a once-in-a-century Covid pandemic and I was on the frontline. When Bengaluru's cases were soaring above 40,000 and hospital beds were unavailable for critical patients, I identified and exposed irregularities in the bed booking system. I also worked on revamping Bengaluru municipality's&nbsp;Bed Booking Software and within 100 hours, over 4,026 beds became available for critical patients. At the same time, I revived 4 defunct hospitals, adding 350&nbsp;beds with Oxygen-support for citizens. My office also set up the country's largest oxygen concentrator bank with over 1,200 concentrators, saving more than 3,000 lives.&nbsp;

In the last 5 years, the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras in Bengaluru South have risen from 14 to 120 in 2024, making Bengaluru South the constituency with the highest number of these kendras in the country.

People have also seen how, after the DJ Halli and KG Halli riots, I successfully advocated for establishing an NIA office in Bengaluru with Union Home Minister Amit Shah Ji for boosting the city's security.&nbsp;

Further, this is a national election for choosing the leader for the country for the next five years. People of Bengaluru South, who are inherently nationalistic, will resoundingly back Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bless me with a huge margin on April 26.

What are your contributions to Bengaluru South constituency?

The biggest highlight is that Bengaluru has received projects worth more than ₹1.3 lakh crore in the last five&nbsp;years alone from PM Modi, the highest contribution by any PM.

They include the approval for the decades-old Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project, Phase 2A, 2B of Namma Metro along with the completion of the Purple Line, 280 km Satellite Town Ring Road around Bengaluru to ease congestion, 1,500 electric buses for Bengaluru and National Investigative Agency (NIA) Office for the city’s safety.

Apart from this, I persistently followed through on a long-standing promise for a US Consulate for Bengaluru, pending since the Chief Ministership of SM Krishna, and secured approval for it.

For the Sri Guru Raghavendra Cooperative Bank depositors, I pushed for banking reforms which enabled 78 per cent&nbsp;of the depositors to get over ₹753 crore in deposit insurance.&nbsp;

Additionally, I put all efforts to secure substantial stop-gap funding of ₹900 crore for the stalled Mantri Serenity Apartment through the SWAMIH Fund, helping over 1,200 families achieve their dream of owning a house.

Who do you hold responsible for Bengaluru's potable water crisis? What would you do to avoid the recurrence of such a crisis?

We have seen how the Congress Government in Karnataka has mismanaged the water crisis, with about 80 per cent of the wards in the city suffering from a shortage. Borewells are running dry and water tankers are either unavailable or charging a bomb even though the State Government claims to have regulated them.&nbsp;

The Congress Government knew about six months ago itself that there’s a drought-like situation coming up in the state and yet, they failed to properly highlight the deficit water availability in the reservoirs during multiple hearings before the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal. The Congress DCM even ‘welcomed’ the adverse orders that were being passed against the interests of Karnataka.

Bengaluru's water crisis demands urgent and strategic intervention. Exploring long-term solutions for providing water security for Bengaluru residents is one of my top priorities in the next term. Together with the active participation of citizens and volunteers, we will focus on revitalising lakes, enhancing rainwater harvesting, and rigorously implementing aquifer recharge projects to ensure long-term water sustainability for all residents.

As one of the country's youngest elected MPs, what's your message for India's first time voters?

About 10 years ago, the youth of this country overwhelmingly elected Sri Narendra Modi Ji as the prime minister. Since then, Modi Ji has propelled India from being one of the 'Fragile 5' economies to world's fifth-largest economy.

PM Modi focuses on youth-led development. Initiatives like Startup India and the revamped National Education Policy have positioned India on a trajectory of rapid growth and innovation, particularly benefiting Bengaluru as the startup capital.

Initiatives such as Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India have empowered our youth to excel in sports, bringing in never-seen-before importance to physical fitness of the young generation. Our government’s unwavering commitment to national security has ensured that India remains safe and secure, with a zero tolerance policy against terrorism.

Youngsters' votes are crucial for sustaining this momentum towards making India the world's third-largest economy. I encourage first-time voters to participate actively in shaping our nation's future by supporting a stable, visionary leadership, and contribute big for 'Ab Ki Baar 400 Paar'.

It is a time to celebrate, rejoice and celebrate and maybe tune in to watch the beloved PM give speeches of desh, right? No. Because as soon as they have chosen their leaders, they have obviously found a new issue to outrage upon. And of course, like it is in most cases, at the receiving end are two women.&nbsp;

On Monday, as newly elected MPs went to Parliament to collect their IDs and certificates, many of took to social media to post photos from outside and inside Parliament. The junta took no time to take the higher moral ground on the two actresses and tutor them what to wear, what to post on their personal pages and even taught Nusrat a lesson on grammar. They were reminded in not so gentle ways that how this was 'not a film set' or a place to do a 'photoshoot' and how they should know 'what to wear' to the holy sanctum of the Indian democracy.&nbsp;

I almost choked on my coffee reading the comments on their attire and scrolled up to check what Mimi and Nusrat were wearing. After all, the two are indeed very glamorous and rule the Bengali film industry with their charm, beauty and perhaps even acting skills. So being top heroines, they may have gone overboard dressing up for the first day at their new job. Instead, what I found disappointed me to a great extent. You see, the two looked very regular - for the lack of a better word. Mimi was dressed in a white shirt and blue denim and Nusrat wore a burgundy pantsuit- stuff that you would find in almost every girl's wardrobe and nothing that should offend anyone in a free, democratic country like ours these days.&nbsp;

But it did.&nbsp;

To quote some of the trolls, the two were asked to get real. "Seriously? This is how you pose in front of the parliament? This is not some film shooting.. Get real, girl!," wrote one user on Mimi's post while another said, "U actually don't know how to dress up.I hope it's not ur shooting place or ur holiday destination.Its an official purpose."&nbsp;

On Nusrat's post, someone told her to wear something more formal than a pant-suit, and wrote "parliament is not a photo studio... make your getup with formal dress..." while another one dissed the people of Basirhat who voted for her and wrote, "SHAME ON THE PEOPLE OF BOSHIRHAT FOR ELECTING THIS WOMAN WHO HAS MADE A JOKE OF OUR PARLIAMENT."

At this point, it is important to know that just like Mimi and Nusrat, Tejasvi too shared his excitement at being inside the parliament and posted numerous photos with senior BJP leaders. Tejasvi wore formal pant and shirt and a Nehru jacket and looked happy in all the photos flashing the rocking sign. But no one seemed to have any problem with his selfies or his attire. How sexist is our society that we diss the women and question their credibility and praise the men at the same time? It may be alright to be a sceptic but to completely admonish the two women on their credibility even before they have started their work is absolutely unfair.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In a surprise move, the BJP Tuesday fielded party's youth wing leader Tejaswi Surya from its bastion of Bangalore South from where the widow of union minister Ananth Kumar, a six-time MP from this prestigious Lok Sabha constituency, was denied the ticket.

Ending the suspense with just hours left for the deadline for filing of nominations for the first phase of polls in Karnataka, the BJP central leadership announced past midnight last night the name of 28-year-old Surya, a lawyer and a member of the party's national social media campaign team.&nbsp;

Surya is the general secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha(BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP.

It was widely expected that the BJP would field Tejaswini given her active participation in scripting her husband's victories from the seat six times, but Surya emerged as the dark horse. Surya filed his nomination papers Tuesday.

The Karnataka BJP core committee had proposed only Tejaswini's name, according to Padmanabhanagar MLA and former deputy chief minister R Ashok.

Tejaswini was also confident about fighting the poll on BJP ticket and had been preparing for it and had started a door-to-door campaign.

She said the party decision came as a shock to her and all of her supporters but maintained that it is very important to show that the BJP was a party with a difference.

"OMG OMG!!! I can't believe this. PM of world's largest democracy &amp; President of largest political party has reposed faith in a 28 yr old guy to represent them in a constituency as prestigious as B'lore South. This can happen only in my BJP," Surya tweeted, reacting to the announcement. 
"Tejaswini Ji has given her blessings".

The reason behind projecting Surya, said BJP sources, was to build a second line of young and talented leaders who can lead the party.

Counted for his oratorical skills, Surya was involved in strengthening the party base in the city as well as in coastal Karnataka, especially around Mangaluru and Udupi, the BJP strongholds.

He will take on Congress Rajya Sabha member B K Hariprasad.

The party apparently plumped for Surya who is from the RSS stable.&nbsp;

Besides being a part of the BJP social media campaign team, he heads the party's state IT cell.

A BJP veteran, Ananth Kumar, who died last year after battling cancer, represented Bangalore South for six terms and had defeated IT czar Nandan Nilekani in the 2014 polls.

"It's Tejaswi and not Tejaswini!" the Twitterati reacted, as the BJP central leadership sprang a surprise for the Bangalore South seat.

Following the denial of ticket to Tejaswini, her loyalists made a bee-line to her house.

A group of her supporters shouted slogans, saying she should have been given the ticket.

Tejaswini, however, insisted that she remained loyal to the party and she accepted their decision to ensure 'NaMo Again'.

"I urge all the BJP karyakartas, friends and well-wishers who are anxious and upset &amp; still visiting our house in large numbers, time to show we are a party with a difference. We are all committed to tread the path of ideology. And work for #NamoAgain2019," she said in a tweet.

Later talking to reporters here, she said there can be some sense of dissatisfaction because things did not happen according to one's beliefs. 
"It is but natural. But above all is the decision of the party... I have been telling my party workers, whatever the party has decided will remain binding on me. Nation first, party next and my interests come last," she added.

Tejaswini, an aerospace engineer, runs an NGO Adamya Chetana in memory of her mother-in-law Girija Shastry, a staunch RSS loyalist, who was active in politics as the member of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, the earlier avatar of BJP. 
Active in public life through the NGO, Tejaswini had worked as a scientist at Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) between 1993-1997 and also on the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA - Tejas) project.

During her student days, she was very active in Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and has also served as its state Joint Secretary and the National executive member.

Highly politically conscious Bangalore South has remained an anti-Congress pocket since 1977, barring once when former late chief minister and a Congress stalwart R Gundu Rao won the 1989 polls.

Bangalore South has eight assembly segments, with BJP holding five and Congress three after the 2018 assembly polls in Karnataka.

True to its cosmopolitan nature, the constituency has a considerable share of Brahmin, Vokkaliga and Muslim voters and a mix of upper and middle-class voters.

The constituency was under the hold of the erstwhile Janata Party after the 1977, 1980 and 1984 general elections and from 1991-2014 in successive parliamentary polls the BJP has maintained its grip, mostly with Ananth Kumar, who first got elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996.

Counted for his oratorical skills, Surya was involved in strengthening the party base in the city as well as in coastal Karnataka, especially around Mangaluru and Udupi, the BJP strongholds. He will take on Congress Rajya Sabha member B K Hariprasad. The party apparently plumped for Surya who is from the RSS stable. Besides being a part of the BJP social media campaign team, he heads the party's state IT cell. A BJP veteran, Ananth Kumar, who died last year after battling cancer, represented Bangalore South for six terms and had defeated IT czar Nandan Nilekani in the 2014 polls. "It's Tejaswi and not Tejaswini!" the Twitterati reacted, as the BJP central leadership sprang a surprise for the Bangalore South seat. Following the denial of ticket to Tejaswini, her loyalists made a bee-line to her house. A group of her supporters shouted slogans, saying she should have been given the ticket. Tejaswini, however, insisted that she remained loyal to the party and she accepted their decision to ensure 'NaMo Again'. "I urge all the BJP karyakartas, friends and well-wishers who are anxious and upset & still visiting our house in large numbers, time to show we are a party with a difference. We are all committed to tread the path of ideology. And work for #NamoAgain2019," she said in a tweet. Later talking to reporters here, she said there can be some sense of dissatisfaction because things did not happen according to one's beliefs. "It is but natural. But above all is the decision of the party... I have been telling my party workers, whatever the party has decided will remain binding on me. Nation first, party next and my interests come last," she added. Tejaswini, an aerospace engineer, runs an NGO Adamya Chetana in memory of her mother-in-law Girija Shastry, a staunch RSS loyalist, who was active in politics as the member of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, the earlier avatar of BJP. Active in public life through the NGO, Tejaswini had worked as a scientist at Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) between 1993-1997 and also on the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA - Tejas) project. During her student days, she was very active in Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and has also served as its state Joint Secretary and the National executive member. Highly politically conscious Bangalore South has remained an anti-Congress pocket since 1977, barring once when former late chief minister and a Congress stalwart R Gundu Rao won the 1989 polls. Bangalore South has eight assembly segments, with BJP holding five and Congress three after the 2018 assembly polls in Karnataka. True to its cosmopolitan nature, the constituency has a considerable share of Brahmin, Vokkaliga and Muslim voters and a mix of upper and middle-class voters. The constituency was under the hold of the erstwhile Janata Party after the 1977, 1980 and 1984 general elections and from 1991-2014 in successive parliamentary polls the BJP has maintained its grip, mostly with Ananth Kumar, who first got elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996.
