He was suspected of copying and taking under possession a total of 5681 confidential business files belonging to HCM Co. on the company's materials, processes, design and equipment development. HCM is a Taiwan-based lithium battery material supplier specializing in lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) production.&nbsp;

“We’re committed to working with Condé Nast and other news publishers to ensure that as AI plays a larger role in news discovery and delivery, it maintains accuracy, integrity, and respect for quality reporting,” it quoted Brad Lightcap, the COO of OpenAI, as saying.

Earlier, OpenAI had entered into similar partnerships with the Associated Press news agency, Axel Springer-which owns a bunch of print and online outlets- The Atlantic magazine, Dotdash Meredith, Financial Times, LeMonde, NewsCorp, Prisa Media, TIME, and Vox Media.

Roger Lynch, CEO of Condé Nast, said in a memo to staff that it will be a multi-year partnership to expand the reach of Condé Nast’s content.

"Generative AI is rapidly changing ways audiences are discovering information. It’s crucial that we meet audiences where they are and embrace new technologies while also ensuring proper attribution and compensation for the use of our intellectual property. This is exactly what we have found with OpenAI," Lynch said.&nbsp;

The decades-old content banks of legacy media groups have suddenly become attractive for generative AI companies, who need it to feed their AI models. This is very different from the situation when tech giants like Google and Facebook used such content for linking, indexing and aggregation purposes, without sufficient compensation for the original content publishing companies. The AI-fuelled search could change all that.

In his statement, Lynch noted how news and digital media have faced steep challenges as Big Tech companies "eroded publishers’ ability to monetise content, most recently with traditional search."

"Our partnership with OpenAI begins to make up for some of that revenue, allowing us to continue to protect and invest in our journalism and creative endeavours," he said.

"It is just the beginning and we will continue what we started in Washington earlier this year - the fight for fair deals and partnerships across the industry until all entities developing and deploying artificial intelligence take seriously, as OpenAI has, the rights of publishers," he added.

This was thought to be a result of these models ‘knowing’ about social situations. But the researchers showed that "it was in fact the result of models using a well-known ability to complete tasks based on a few examples presented to them, known as ‘in-context learning’ or ICL," Bath University said in a release.

What the study found is that while LLMs have "a superficial ability" to follow instructions and might have excellent language proficiency, they still have no potential "to master new skills without explicit instruction."

This means they remain inherently controllable, predictable and safe," said the release, leading to the conclusion that LLMs are not an existential threat to humanity.

"The research team concluded that LLMs – which are being trained on ever larger datasets – can continue to be deployed without safety concerns, though the technology can still be misused," it said.

While in future, these AI models might be able to 'speak' and write more sophisticated language, and follow more detailed prompts, they "are highly unlikely to gain complex reasoning skills," the researchers concluded.

“The prevailing narrative that this type of AI is a threat to humanity prevents the widespread adoption and development of these technologies, and also diverts attention from the genuine issues that require our focus,” said Dr Harish Tayyar Madabushi, computer scientist at the University of Bath and co-author of the study.

"Our study shows that the fear that a model will go away and do something completely unexpected, innovative and potentially dangerous is not valid," the release quoted him as saying.

“While it's important to address the existing potential for the misuse of AI, such as the creation of fake news and the heightened risk of fraud, it would be premature to enact regulations based on perceived existential threats,” he said.

The study was published as part of the proceedings of the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics on Monday (Aug 12).

The US military had partly funded the air taxi which is powered by six propellers that gave it the ability to take off as well as land vertically like a helicopter.

Airport robots are going to soon be ubiquitous in India. The latest development on this technology is the planned use of robots in the cleaning operations at the&nbsp;Trivandrum International airport in the southern state of Kerala, which could be a first for Indian airports.

Local media reports said on Wednesday (July 17) that the robotics company Genrobotic Innovations will use the robot in the cleaning operations.

The robot will be used in the international airport to clean canals and remove rainwater.

The reports said that the airport operator, Adani enterprises, has reached an agreement towards this. The robot is expected to be handed over in 60 days, according to Genrobotic CEO Vimal Govind, who spoke to Manoramaonline website.

Robots from Genrobotic were used in the massive search operations this month for sanitation worker Joy, who went missing while cleaning a canal flooded by recent Monsoon rains. After days of search that &nbsp;transfixed the southern state, Joy's life could not be saved.

The robots, named Bandicoot and Draco, were used to clean up the canal and help in the rescue operation to save Joy, which ultimately failed. But the use of robots caught the attention of the airport operators, setting off the talks for use of robots in the airport.

Bandicoot was launched in 2017 to clean manholes. Draco was used to search the area where Joy went missing.

The company hopes to use more robots in rescue operations and disaster situations in future.&nbsp;

Drone maker DJI revealed Wednesday (Jun 5) that it transported cargo from base camp to the top at an altitude above 6,000 metres using its FlyCart 30 drone. During the test flight, it carried 15kg of oxygen cylinders and other supplies to Camp 1, located 1,700 metres above the base camp. During the return flight, the drone carried waste of the same weight. The company said the drone still had 43 per cent battery power remaining after making the full trip and it braved sub-zero temperatures and strong winds during the test flight.

Christina Zhang, DJI’s senior corporate strategy director, in a company release, said, “The ability to safely transport equipment, supplies and waste by drone has the potential to revolutionise Everest mountaineering logistics, facilitate trash clean-up efforts, and improve safety for all involved.”

<h2>Why is it significant?</h2>

Flying drones, or any aircraft for that matter, becomes difficult at higher altitudes because of thinner air and lower air pressure. These conditions also severely limit the amount of payload a drone can carry.

Following the successful test of the Chinese drone, the Nepalese government has launched a drone transport project to clean up the trekking path of the world's tallest summit.

<h2>Everest turning into 'garbage dump'</h2>

Mt Everest is visited by thousands of climbers every year. Last year, a total of 6,600 climbers made it to the top and each of them left an estimated 8kg of waste (average) on their way up and down. According to DJI, this has turned Everest into the “world’s highest garbage dump”.

The company added that an estimated 140 tonnes of waste have accumulated on the mountain over the past seven decades. This waste includes empty oxygen bottles, abandoned tents and food packaging.

The reason why drones are required in cleanliness operations is that local guides must cross the Khumbu Icefall, an unstable river of ice that is one of the most difficult sections of the mountain, to carry waste from Camp 1 to the base camp.

According to the Chief of Rosatom, the bilateral discussion touched upon "serial construction of the Russian-designed high-capacity nuclear power units at a new site in India, implementation of land-based and floating low-power generation projects, cooperation in the nuclear fuel cycle area, as well as in the field of non-power applications of nuclear technologies".&nbsp;

Officials also discussed the progress of India's largest Nuclear power project at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu, of which two 1000Megawatt reactors are already operational and four more of 1000Megawatt capacity are in various stages of construction.

The development and operationalisation of the Kudankulam Nuclear power generating facility is the flagship project of the Russian-Indian technological and power industry cooperation, with Rosatom State Corporation providing fuel to the power units of Kudankulam NPP throughout their entire life cycle.
