Afghanistan International Television (AITV) - one of the most prominent anti-establishment voices in the country has been forced to shut down broadcast for over a week due to the orbital jammers blocking its satellite stations.&nbsp;

According to reports, the Taliban sent disruptive signals from a ground station to the satellite, interfering with the channel;s broadcast. Between September 5 and 13, viewers saw a blank screen on their TV sets before the channel shifted to a different satellite frequency.&nbsp;

“I had received information in August from inside Kabul that the Taliban had purchased an extremely expensive jammer with the intention of using it against us,” AITV's&nbsp;executive editor Harun Najafizada told&nbsp;The Independent.&nbsp;

“This act of orbital jamming not only attacks press freedom but also violates international standards and highlights the Taliban’s increasing efforts to dismantle free expression and restrict Afghan citizens’ access to truthful information,” added&nbsp;Najafizada.&nbsp;

The publication stated that the Taliban obtained the Iranian orbital jammers earlier this year in May, with the rather expensive purchase confirmed&nbsp;by sources inside Kabul’s General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI), the intelligence agency of the Taliban.&nbsp;

“This interference and shutdown via orbital jammers will not be limited to just AITV but other international news channels which the Taliban doesn’t find fit under their interpretation of Sharia law, they want to implement their own state radio and television broadcast which praise the Supreme leader and his Talib ministers,” a source was quoted as saying.

Notably, after the death of 22-year-old Mahasa Amini in Iran last year and the subsequent protests, Tehran also jammed AITV's sister channel&nbsp;Iran International.&nbsp;

As per AFP, while many of these restraints were already in place informally, this law formalises further constraints on their rights.&nbsp;

Otunbayeva said the new law "extends the already intolerable restrictions on the rights of Afghan women and girls, with even the sound of a female voice outside the home apparently deemed a moral violation". The UN has previously described the treatment of Afghan women as "gender apartheid".

The law stipulates in particular that "Muslim women are obliged to cover their faces and bodies" around men who are not "mahrams" -- typically a husband, brother, father, son, grandfather or uncle under Islam -- and non-Muslim women.&nbsp;

"If a mature woman must leave her house out of a necessity, she is obliged to cover her face, body and ensure her voice is not heard."

Men are also instructed not to wear shorts above the knee or to closely trim their beards.&nbsp;

Prohibitions are issued for vehicle drivers: no music, no drugs, no transporting unveiled women or women in the presence of men who are without a mahram.&nbsp;

Other rules include bans on homosexuality, missing prayers, adultery, gambling, making animals fight or disobeying one's parents, as well as creating or viewing images of living beings on a computer or phone.

“Inshallah we assure you that this Islamic law will be of great help in the promotion of virtue and the elimination of vice,” said ministry spokesman Maulvi Abdul Ghafar Farooq on Thursday, of the new laws.

The formal 114-page document consisting of vice and virtue laws has been seen by the Associated Press and forms the first declaration of such rules in Afghanistan since the Taliban came into power in 2021. The Taliban regime also set up a ministry for the “propagation of virtue and the prevention of vice.”

The laws will empower the ministry to be at the forefront of regulating personal conduct, administering punishments like warnings or arrests if enforcers allege that Afghans have broken the laws.

Women and girls are already prohibited from several things including going to school under the Taliban regime. These new laws will further intimidate Afghan women to fight for basic rights.

As per the new law, a woman’s voice is deemed intimate and so should not be heard singing, reciting, or reading aloud in public. The laws also forbid women to look at men they are not related to by blood or marriage and vice versa.&nbsp;

Women are also obliged to cover themselves in front of non-Muslim males and females to avoid being “corrupted.”

The laws also ban the playing of music, transportation of solo female travellers, and mixing of men and women who are not related to each other by blood or by marriage. The laws also oblige passengers and drivers to perform prayers five times a day.

"Currently, we have very good relations with neighbouring, regional and Muslim countries," Mujahid said, adding that about 40 countries had embassies or consulates in Afghanistan.

While Western embassies in Kabul have been closed for three years, Pakistan, China, Russia, Iran and Central Asian republics have established de facto diplomatic relations with Kabul.

Russia is also preparing to remove the Taliban from its list of terrorist organisations, while Beijing has appointed its first ambassador to Kabul since the takeover.

Fears over the growing security threat from the Islamic State group's branch in the region, known as Islamic State Khorasan Province, have also spurred engagement.

Last week, the UN warned that IS-K posed the greatest external terrorist threat to Europe and was growing in strength.

Mujahid insisted the IS threat was being overblown.

"We have brought the phenomenon of ISKP to nearly zero," he told AFP.

After ousting the foreign-backed government and ending their 20-year insurgency, the Taliban rulers have made security one of their highest priorities.

The Taliban authorities still allocate a large part of the national budget to security, despite Afghanistan no longer being at war and its economy in dire straits.

"They might not be the same as in the previous government or what are common in democratic governments, but we have developed these mechanisms in an Islamic way and we are committed to the country's interests," Mujahid said.

Baheer, based in Kabul, said he still believed dialogue could bring about change.&nbsp;

The team found the rocks and fossils which belonged to the long-extinct marine reptiles in Angola.&nbsp;

It is not new information that the eastern coast of South America and the western coast of Africa once were co-joined in the supercontinent Gondwana, which had drifted from the larger landmass of Pangea.

According to the research team, the southern coast of Angola is filled with the most complete geological record of the breaking of the two continents and the coming up of the South Atlantic Ocean.&nbsp;

The scientists found the fossils and rocks which dated back from 71 million years to 130 million years ago.&nbsp;

SMU professor emeritus of Earth Sciences and lead author of the study Louis L Jacobs said, “There are places that you can go to in South America, for instance, where you can see this part of the split or that part of it, but in Angola, it’s all laid out in one place."

“Before this, there was not a place known to go and see the rocks on the surface that really reflected the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean, because they’re now in the ocean or eroded away,” he added.
