<p>Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager in Manchester United's history, underwent emergency surgery on Saturday for a brain haemorrhage, the club said.</p>

<p>"The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery," a statement said. "His family request privacy in this matter."</p>

<p>United captain Michael Carrick tweeted: "Absolutely devastated to hear about Sir Alex being unwell in hospital. All my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. Be strong boss."</p>

<p>Ferguson's son Darren, the manager of Doncaster Rovers, was reported to have missed his team's match on Saturday for family reasons.</p>

<p>The 76-year-old was United manager from 1986 to 2013, winning the Champions League twice, the Premier League 13 times and five FA Cups.</p>

<p>He was knighted in 1999, the year United achieved a treble by winning those three trophies in one season.</p>

<p>He made his managerial reputation in his native Scotland with Aberdeen, winning three Scottish League titles and the European Cup Winners' Cup.</p>

<p>After taking Scotland to the 1986 World Cup following the death of Jock Stein, Ferguson joined United in November 1986 after Ron Atkinson was sacked.</p>

<p>It took three and a half years to achieve his first success with them, the FA Cup title in 1990.</p>

<p>The Lancashire native had been left with a suture in his abdomen after a bowel operation that he underwent 15 years ago. Unfortunately, for the longest time, he didn&rsquo;t notice the stiches. In fact, it was in 2011 that he identified and then complained about the stitches protruding out of his body.</p>

<p>However, when he raised the issue with the hospital, he was put on a waiting list and then had two scheduled operations cancelled.</p>

<p>Finally, he decided to devise his own set of DIY surgery tools, and went ahead to operate on himself. The tools he developed were adapted from titanium instruments, given to him by a friend, who works as dentist.</p>

<p>Given that he was undoing a surgeon&rsquo;s knot, Graham had to be extra careful. &ldquo;I needed to modify them to undo some of the stitches. I couldn&rsquo;t have just cut it off as it might have retracted and I would have been in real trouble. I had to undo them one by one,&rdquo; he told the BBC.</p>

<p>&ldquo;There was a bit of blood and it stung a bit, but I was confident in what I was doing,&rdquo; he recalled, adding that post the surgery, he now feels like a new man.</p>

<p>Upon learning of Graham&rsquo;s case, the hospital trust has advised patients to stick to clinical advice. That&rsquo;s something that Graham also concurs with: &ldquo;Anything could have gone wrong. Don&rsquo;t try this at home.&rdquo;</p>
