The analysis revealed that women who reported consuming at least one sugary beverage a day were 4.87 times more likely to have developed mouth cancer when compared to those who consumed less than one in a month.

The World Health Organization (WHO) called on countries to raise taxes on alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), on Tuesday (Dec 5) while noting that a majority of the countries do not incentivise healthier behaviours.&nbsp;

The recommendations were based on the United Nations health agency's study of the taxation rates which found that the average global tax rate on such “unhealthy products” was low, and hiking taxes could result in healthier populations and reduce the deaths&nbsp;they cause.&nbsp; 
 
“WHO recommends that excise tax should apply to all sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and alcoholic beverages,” said the UN agency&nbsp;in a statement. Excise taxes target specific consumer products.&nbsp;

<h2>Millions of deaths due to alcohol and SSBs</h2>

Around 2.6 million people across the world die from drinking alcohol, while more than eight million die from having an unhealthy diet, according to WHO, adding that implementing a tax on them “will reduce these deaths.”

The UN agency also said that raising the tax will not only help reduce the consumption of these beverages but also incentivise companies to make healthier products.&nbsp;

“Taxing unhealthy products creates healthier populations. It has a positive ripple effect across society, less disease and debilitation and revenue for governments to provide public services,” said Rüdiger Krech, the UN agency’s health promotion director, in the statement.&nbsp;

“In the case of alcohol, taxes also help prevent violence and road traffic injuries,” he added.

The tax on these products would also help prevent non-communicable diseases such as cancers, diabetes and heart diseases, said the UN health agency.&nbsp;

<h2>What else did WHO find?</h2>

The report also noted that half of all countries taxing SSBs are also taxing water – not something that the WHO recommends. Around 108 countries of its 194 members impose some taxation on SSBs. Globally, excise taxes on average represent just 6.6 per cent of the price of a soda.

Additionally, at least 148 countries have applied excise taxes to alcohol at the national level. However, wine is exempted from excise taxes in at least 22 countries, most of which are in Europe, said WHO.&nbsp;

The tax, according to the UN agency, on the price of the most sold brand of beer is 17.2 per cent. Meanwhile, the tax on "the most sold brand of the most sold&nbsp;type of spirit" is 26 per cent.

“A significant body of research has demonstrated that people who engage in heavy episodic drinking tend to drink the cheapest available alcoholic beverages,” said the WHO.&nbsp;

Researchers measured the daily intakes of sugary drinks against those of diet beverages and compared them to cancer cases in participants' medical records during the follow-up period.

They found that just a 100 ml increase per day of sugary drinks was associated with an 18 per cent increased risk of cancer, and with a 22 per cent increase in breast cancer.&nbsp;

Both sugar-sweetened drinks and fruit juices saw a similar higher risk association.&nbsp;

During a follow-up, researchers found 2,193 cases of cancer were diagnosed, the average age at diagnosis being 59 years.&nbsp;

Authors of the study, which appeared in the BMJ medical journal, stressed their work was based on observation and so could not establish the cause of cancer prognoses.&nbsp;

But the sample size was large and they adjusted for a number of other influential factors.

Its authors suggested that, based on their findings, taxing sugary products could have a significant impact on cancer rates.&nbsp;

Wickremesinghe's administration, which was toppled on October 26, had introduced the sweet tax -- 50 cents on every gram of sugar in fizzy and fruit drinks -- but the rate was slashed to 30 cents from Saturday.

The health ministry has said that 10 per cent of the country's 21 million population is affected by diabetes and another 20 per cent were at risk of developing the condition.

Health lobbyist Dhanya Wijesuriya took to Twitter to slam the authorities for making sugary drinks cheaper.

"This is insane," Wijesuriya said of the decision. "How self-serving. No vision," he added.

Former health minister Rajitha Senaratne described the tax cut as "irresponsible".&nbsp;

There was no immediate comment from Sirisena who last year warned international beverage makers that he would increase taxes unless they reduced sugar in their products.

British teenagers drink a bathtub full of sugary drinks every year, Cancer Research foundation said on Tuesday.

According to CRUK, Children aged 11 to 18 consume on an average about 234 cans of sugar-sweetened soft drinks each year.

The figure is equal to almost a bath full and more than double for children between four and 10, their average annual intake adding up to 110 cans.

The data is from a recent report carried out by the British government&#39;s health department and the Food Standards Agency.

The study found a drop in the amount of sugar-sweetened soft drinks consumed by children, and a more significant fall recorded in the under-10s than teenagers.&nbsp;

However, despite the improving data, CRUK said there is &nbsp;an urgent need to further reduce children&#39;s intake of sugary drinks and voiced its support behind government proposal to introduce a sugar tax.

&quot;The ripple effect of a small tax on sugary drinks is enormous, and it will give soft drinks companies a clear incentive to reduce the amount of sugar in drinks,&quot; Alison Cox, director of prevention at CRUK told AFP.

&quot;But the government can do more to give the next generation a better chance.

&quot;The UK has an epidemic on its hands, and needs to act now,&quot; she added.

British Prime Minister Theresa May &nbsp;in August had said that she plans &nbsp;to introduce a sugar tax aimed at tackling childhood obesity, tooth decay and type 2 diabetes.

The sugar levy was first unveiled in March by former prime minister &nbsp;David Cameron&rsquo;s administration.

The tax is meant for drinks with more than five grams of sugar per 100 millilitres and will be introduced in two years, despite strong opposition from the drinks industry.

Only &nbsp;France, South Africa and Mexico have attempted such a tax.
