IIT Kharagpur finds a way to prevent student suicide crisis amid increasing campus tragedies - Here's what they will do

ANI | The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police arrested a student of KIIT University in connection with the alleged death by suicide of a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal who died on Sunday.
The incident also led to protests by students and members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday demanding justice.
Speaking on the case, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Suresh Dev Datta Singh stated that authorities received information about the suicide of a third-year Computer Science student.

"Yesterday evening, we received information about the incident of suicide by a girl student of a third-year Computer Science in KIIT University. On this information, a case was registered. There was an allegation that this girl, who belonged to Nepal, was harassed by one student of KIIT University in third year mechanical engineering. We investigated the matter, and we got prima facie evidence that there was some sort of harassment which could have prompted the girl to die by suicide, so we arrested the accused person; we examined him, and today, he has been forwarded to judicial custody," said Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Suresh Dev Datta Singh while speaking to ANI.
The Commissioner further said that authorities have seized the victim's personal belongings, including her mobile phone, which will be sent for forensic examination.
"Yesterday, there was a sentimental, emotional outburst so both students belonging to Nepal, as well as India, joined together in protest against the university authorities, demanding justice. We deployed a police force at KIIT University...they were convinced by morning and now the situation is peaceful."

"We have seized some personal belongings like a mobile from the girl, and it will be first sent to the forensic science laboratory and then it will be analysed to gather further evidence in this case...," he added.
Earlier in the day, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said that his government has taken cognisance of the incident and is pursuing the matter with India through diplomatic channels.
"It has come to our attention through media and social media that a Nepali student has died in the hostel of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Odisha, India, and that Nepali students have been forcibly evicted from the hostel," Oli said in a statement posted on his Facebook account.

"Our Embassy in New Delhi has dispatched two officers to counsel Nepali students affected in Odisha," Oli said in a post on X.
"Additionally, arrangements have been made to ensure they have the option to either remain in their hostel or return home, based on their preference," he said.
Notably, a third-year BTech student from Nepal was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room at the girl's hostel room on February 15 evening. An FIR was lodged at the Infocity police station of Bhubaneswar on February 16 on the complaint of the cousin of the deceased girl, alleging that the latter was being blackmailed by a male student at the university. The police have lodged a case under Section 108 of the BNS.
Students, primarily of Nepali origin, took out a protest demanding the arrest of the boy they claimed was responsible for abusing the girl and thus leading to her suicide. The KIIT University on Monday evening issued a statement appealing to Nepali students "who have or plan to leave the campus to return and resume the classes."
"There was an unfortunate incident which took place late in the evening yesterday on the KIIT campus. Immediately after the incident, police investigated the matter and apprehended the culprit."
The KIIT administration has made all-out efforts to restore normalcy in the campus and hostels to resume the academic activities," the university said in a statement on Monday.
Prior to this, the Odisha University had issued a notice that reportedly said that the varsity was "closed sine die for all international students from Nepal" and they were directed to vacate the university campus.
Students stated that they were visibly distressed and anxious as they don't have necessary tickets to return home. Some even claimed that they were preparing for examinations, which are set to start in the last week of February.

Nine students have died by suicide in Andhra Pradesh after results of class 11 and 12 exams were declared on Wednesday by the Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate Examination. As per National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) Accidental Deaths &amp; Suicides in India (ADSI) report, over 13,000 students died in 2021 in India at the rate of more than 35 every day, a rise of 4.5 per cent from the 12,526 deaths in 2020 with 864 out of 10,732 suicides being due to “failure in examination.”&nbsp;

The number of deaths by suicide among students saw an increase of 4.5 per cent in 2021, shows the latest data from the NCRB. Maharashtra had the highest number of student deaths by suicide in 2021 with 1,834 deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 1,308, and Tamil Nadu with 1,246 deaths.

Speaking on this issue, Dr Ashima Shrivastava, RCI Registered Child and Adult Psychologist told WION, “As we all know that there is a stigma related to mental health issues. Many times people are not able to approach professional help. So, in such a scenario there are Govt helplines and NGO helplines which are very helpful. First of all, they are free of cost and easily accessible and children could keep a note of these emergency numbers. These helplines provide a very confidential and non-judgemental support to the children when a person is in a high level of distress. To name a few in India, there is Sanjeevani and Sneh, run by&nbsp;NGOs, there are proper timings and languages present on their website.”

A healthy sleep cycle is the most important thing. There are many grounding exercises that can be helpful in dealing with overwhelming stress and anxiety,” she added.

Suicide which accounts for the fourth leading cause of death amongst the youth is an alarming issue in the country, for a population where 65 per cent of people are under 35 years of age. It is one of the leading causes of fatalities. A national policy on suicide prevention is an imperative step towards fulfilling India’s commitment to health in general and mental health in particular as well as towards achieving the World Health Organization’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Terming the content of the news reports very serious in nature, the NHRC notice said, "Issue of serious lapse on part of the authorities amounts to the violation of human rights. Thorough probe into the matter is required not only to punish the guilty but to ensure that such sorrowful incidents do not recur in future."

The State Education Ministry, the Board and the government initially dismissed the allegations but later gave in to the growing protests with the students also approaching the High Court.

The role of a private company, Globarena Technologies, which was given the contract to process the result, has also come under the scanner.

Protesters are also asking why the government agency, Centre for Good Governance, was not entrusted with the task.

More than 10 lakh students appeared for the class 12 exam in February 2018, of which around 3.5 lakh failed.

Students appearing for admission entrance tests are also running short of time. Conducting supplementary examination for these many students is also proving to be a humongous task for the board.&nbsp;

The state government has said it continued to oppose NEET and recalled its efforts to secure an exemption for Tamil Nadu such as adopting resolutions in the assembly in this regard.

Police said Subasri who was nurturing an ambition to join MBBS scored only 907 marks out of 1200 in the Class XII exam but was hopeful of clearing the NEET as she had attended coaching classes.

But, the poor marks in the NEET shocked and saddened her and she was feeling very anguished since then, they said.

Subasri's father Kannan, a transport corporation employee, and mother had tried to pacify her and asked her not to worry and tried to divert her attention by taking her outside, including the temple, they said.

But she felt very ashamed and depressed. She went inside her room last night when her mother was cooking and hanged herself, they said, adding her body was handed over to her parents after post-mortem today.

State Transport Minister M R Vijaya Baskar visited the bereaved family and offered his condolences.

Kannan said his daughter was dreaming to study medicine and offer service to the poor. Despite her hard work, she could not clear NEET, he said.

Going by the latest data, nearly 26,476 students took their life between 2014 and 2016. Around 9,474 students committed suicide in the year 2016.
