BBC's Director General Tim Davie issued a public apology on Tuesday to celebrity contestants who had negative experiences on the popular prime-time show Strictly Come Dancing. This follows a series of bullying allegations that have tarnished the reputation of the popular programme.

Strictly Come Dancing, which has been successfully exported to over 60 countries through the Dancing with the Stars franchise, is considered a major part of BBC light entertainment. However, recent months have seen the show embroiled in controversy after former contestant and actor Amanda Abbington revealed that the intense training routines led her to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

"I'm very sorry that anyone has had an experience on Strictly that hasn't been wholly positive," Davie told reporters, addressing the growing scandal. "I think that is something we do reflect on, and I'm sorry about that."

Davie acknowledged the competitive nature and the rigorous demands of the show but emphasised that there are boundaries that must not be crossed. "Competitiveness, hard work, and the will to do well are part of what makes the show successful. But there are limits, and the line should never be crossed. We will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour of any kind," he asserted.

Abbington's complaint has encouraged other former contestants to come forward with their allegations against the show's professional dancers. This has thrown the long-running programme, which pairs celebrities with professional ballroom dancers, into turmoil.

Former contestant Will Bayley, a Paralympian table tennis player, is the latest celebrity to speak out, alleging that he suffered a serious injury while performing a jump in rehearsals. Bayley claimed there was "no duty of care" and that despite warnings that the jump from a table during a routine was too dangerous, he was encouraged to proceed.

His injury, which involved torn knee ligaments, forced him to withdraw from the series in 2019. Bayley also reported that show producers made him feel responsible for the accident.

In response to these revelations, one professional dancer accused of physically mistreating a contestant announced his departure from the show earlier this month, admitting that his "intense passion and determination to win" might have influenced his training methods negatively.

Another dancer, who is not returning to the show, stated he is cooperating with an ongoing BBC investigation into complaints about him, which he believes will "determine the truth."

While Davie refrained from commenting on individual allegations, he pledged to listen to anyone who had a negative experience on the show. "If someone feels there was something wrong... then, of course, we want them to raise that with us and be in no doubt, we will take it seriously," he said.

'Strictly Come Dancing' star Amy Dowden ties the knot with fiancé Ben Jones

One of the most popular programmes on British television, 'Strictly Come Dancing', is to feature the first same-sex pairing in its 16-year-history, the BBC said Wednesday.

Double Olympic British boxing champion Nicola Adams will dance in the upcoming series starting next month, which she said would be "nice for the LGBT community".

"I think it's really important," she told the broadcaster. "It's definitely time for change.

"It's definitely time to move on and be more diverse, and this is a brilliant step in the right direction."

It has not yet been revealed who will be her dance partner.

'Strictly', as it is widely known, is one of the BBC's most popular franchises, and has been exported to more than 40 countries including the United States, Pakistan and Japan.

The top-rated show, which pairs celebrities with professional ballroom dancers, airs on Saturday and Sundays and attracted more than 11 million viewers for last year's final.

It has previously featured two men dancing together but only in a one-off routine. The two professionals were coupled for a segment which attracted almost 200 complaints, said the BBC.

Other countries, such as Austria and Denmark, have already featured same-sex couples on their versions of the show.
Former celebrity contestants backed the move but the decision to pair Adams with a woman could pitch the British broadcaster into another controversy.

Under attack over its funding arrangements, the BBC has been in the firing line of Conservative MPs in recent months.
On Wednesday the BBC reversed a decision to make changes to the classical music festival the Last Night of the Proms, which had seen it accused of being too "politically correct".
